This mystery has now taken over Graceâs entire mind. Who are they? Where did they come from and how? It canât actually be some otherworldly force pulling them together like fate, right? Why were they in a submarine with an x-ray wired into itâwell, it was submerged in blood, so that would make sense, but why and how was it submerged in blood?
And, of course, how will the first human heâs seen in years interact with him when they wake up?
The only way to confirm any of that is to ask them himself. So for now, all he can do is wait.

but also, crossovers. bloodymary? of course (see red string for details). bloodymary on the rocks? once again, the eridians love their humans. trolley operators? let those hardworking ladies love! grace x tony stark? bitter exes who could definitely make it work after their character arcs. grace x the doctor? i love this one, they would be fascinated with each other. grace x officer k? there needs to be more content of them i LOVE br49 with my whole being.

yeah so after ranting about all of my issues in bloodymary fics and re-consuming both iron lung and project hail mary, i realized that i was being a bit of a hypocrite with my own fic, so i decided to change things up!

i promise iâm getting to the chapter art that i said i would make. i promise i am. i simply wanted to place the men into the white void first to learn what they look like yknow
also i did not look up what healed scars look like. i am on a roll with the whole no research thing
hereâs some design notes:
on the hail mary:
- ryland is 38 and simon is 33 :)
- in my fic, simon gets teleported into the petrova line of tau ceti right before the eel gets him, and after rocky wakes up from their fishing trip mishap. they pick him up and work on healing together!
- if iâm remembering right, in the book ryland says that he got second-degree burns from the ammonia of rockyâs atmosphere when sticking him back in his tunnels. i way overshot the healing time, but thatâs kinda how second-degree burns look i think. the one from rockyâs claw is from the movie and would definitely be a lot more than second-degree but i think i did an okay job differentiating them
- both of the shirts i gave ryland are ones i own irl and wear regularly! my âsay no to potâ shirt is from connecticut, not maine, but i didnât feel like correcting the google image. also since i posted a tiktok about the âbe greater than averageâ shirt and got a few comments asking where i got it, itâs from kennedy space center! they do still sell it as far as i know :)
- everything else about his appearance is entirely movie-based. i really like how they designed him, especially the dumb t-shirts lol. also i really like the jumpsuit-as-pants thing he has going on so here he is
- simonâs are a bit different. i kinda figured that the corrosionâs effect would resemble burns a bit but itâs 100% more severe than rylandâs so. also darker red because blood? i suppose? i feel really dumb not having done any research now BUT i can just use the excuse that at this point, the blood is doing just about everything it can to keep him alive kinda like it does in the movie, so this guy is effectively immortal and heals decently fast. i can do whatever i want i love my blorbos
- none of simonâs clothes survived the blood, so heâs wearing rylandâs, though they are entirely too small for him despite ryland being the closest crew member to him in size. the tshirt design is one i remember my sixth grade english teacher having so i gave it to ryland and then simon by proxy because why not. ryland does get his jeans back eventually as you can see so the clothing exchange is fine for now! the shoes are yaoâs, however, because they just happen to share a shoe size.
on erid (actual headcanon territory):
- ryland is 47 and simon is 42 :)
- in the book ryland mentions having a cane, but i gave him a modified forearm crutch instead since itâd help with the increased gravity. the end bit looks like an eridian claw and has a mechanism to grab onto rough terrain, as well as grab objects from low heights when he canât bend over because of his arthritis!
- he continues to wear the clothes he brought with him from earth even after all this time, because theyâre comfy to him. obviously during his malnutrition and recovery his weight fluctuates a lot, but it eventually settles back into his normal range so he can wear his dumb t-shirts again!
- he wears the jewelry rocky made for him every day. itâs a common eridian tradition to give others a piece of your exoskeleton when youâre close to them (supported by the bit of adrianâs in rockyâs arm in the movie) so the necklace has bits of rocky, adrian, and several other eridians heâs friends with. his earrings are extra bits of rocky and adrian! his students also like to make him jewelry so he wears those a lot too.
-also his watch is a modified eridian clock! he uses the same watchband that he wears in the movie because itâs comfy for him even after the face itself breaks, so rocky fixes it for him so he remembers to go to class and eat and other important stuff that his audhd brain wouldnât remember otherwise lol
- after being on erid for a while ryland decides to grow his hair out a bit, and since simon gets a proper prosthetic arm theyâre able to help each other with haircare! itâs self-indulgent for me but idc iâll draw all the long hair men i want. also he greys more than simon for reasons iâll mention in a second
- on that topic, simonâs hair is properly long. he keeps it for a few reasons: it reminds him of how his mom used to care for it for him when he was a kid, he likes having ryland help him with it (ryland loves it too), and it looks awesome on him and everyone agrees. he keeps it in a braid like this most of the time, though he tries different styles very regularly, often with rylandâs help. he has bits of adrian and rocky tied into it as well!
- he greys a lot slower, not just because heâs younger but also because it takes a while for the bits of the blood in him to let him age, and it only happens after he finally accepts that heâs safe and isnât letting his carnal desire for survival overtake every other emotion he has. yippee trauma
- xenonite arm!! i was kinda going off of how rockyâs inventions looked in the movie for the design, including how a lot of the base shapes are hexagonal, so he has joints that kinda look like d12 dice. it works though! the bits in his toolbelt attach to his fingers so he can do just about anything with it. and it does attach to his nerves (think fullmetal alchemist) so he can move it properly and somewhat feel with his fingertips. he can remove it and does sometimes, but after they really perfect the design he just keeps it on most of the time. theres also a silicone cover he can put on over it when heâs doing more domestic things, because the joints do still get caught on stuff, and also itâs softer for fluff purposes iykwim
- he also keeps his garden shears on him because of course he does. this guy LOVES plants, so whenever heâs not with rockyâs engineering team or with ryland, heâs in his garden or tending to his trees. he has tool attachments for that too, which he designed himself since the eridians arenât used to having trees around.
- since simon doesnât have anything that fits him, the eridians make him a bunch of clothes using designs from the endless amount of information on humanity the hail mary has. he prefers much looser clothing (sensory issues. autism) and tends to be better at putting outfits together than ryland, who just cares about comfort. he likes looking nicer but doesnât like attracting attention to himself, so he usually wears simple button-ups and the equivalent of loose dress pants.
- there is a point later where they have a proper eridian mating ceremony, andâiâm gonna need yâall to get cool with a lot of things real quickâthey exchange a bit of the skin on their forearms like eridians do! itâs only the top few layers and they have to do a lot of testing on both of their cells to confirm that theyâre biologically compatible after simonâs mutations, but it works because i say so. also they do have a version of a traditional earth wedding as well, and simon takes rylandâs last name because he doesnât have one :)

let me preface this by saying that i love this fandom, fandoms in general, and fandom culture, despite all of the problems inherent to them. iâm aware that mob mentality is a thing and thereâs definitely a lot of that, especially confined within a tumblr tag, which can very easily turn into an echo chamber, so a lot of people will end up saying similar things. however, everything i say here is a gross generalization. when i say âyâallâ or âyou guysâ i do not mean everyone. again, iâm cool with most things i see here and scroll through this tag at least five times a day atp.
that being saidâŚ
hereâs some issues i have with the bloodymary fandom.
my credentials: iâve seen phm five times and read the book twice. iâve seen iron lung twice and consumed a shit ton of lore videos about the game. i wrote a fic about them specifically because i saw a bunch of mischaracterization and wanted to fight against it (and also write fluff about them cause why not).
anyways:
1. people love to mischaracterize. i know thatâs just a fandom thing in general but itâs more prevalent here than usual in my opinion and it bothers me. more specifics:
- simon is not only aggressive and angry. sure he was not having a good time while he was actively dying, but afterwards, when he realizes heâs not dying? yeah itâd take him a bit to warm up to ryland but he wouldnât want to kill him yknow. this is the same guy who was guilty about giving cancer to the people who were literally sending him to his death, and later had a tentative camaraderie with the lady that decided to send him there in the first place! cmon yâall
- ryland is not only soft and kind. yeah heâs a teacher so heâs gonna be very careful towards simon at first but heâs also a sassy bitch who will fight for what he wants and one of the smartest people in his field. not only that but heâs a bit selfish, incredibly resourceful, and a major risk taker. heâs going to want to solve the mystery of simon asap, just like he does with rocky at first, even if he hides it behind being supportive.
- iâve also noticed people doing the reverse, where simon is super sad and traumatized 100% of the time and grace does nothing but protect him. like guys, theyâre both grown men with agency of their own.
- yeah simon was in a cult but he makes it clear that he didnât choose it and doesnât believe what they do, and yea heâd probably have a bit of a âthis guy saved me so i have to repay himâ thing, but not to the crazy extent some people make it. also iâve seen some people have him thinking he deserves to die after all heâs done? what?? he knows filament station wasnât meant to happen the way it did and even if he did blame himself for it he still wants to live no matter what! even after he realized he wasnât getting out he still decided to die fighting and save the black box!! why the hell would he suddenly decide to give up after he realizes heâs not dying anymore??
- yeah grace is supportive but heâs got plenty of trauma to work through and has been through a hell of his own, and despite how much he cares about simon he still has his own purpose of saving earth and erid, and later teaching his kids and helping the other eridians with science. he wouldnât dedicate his entire life to simon like iâve seen some people have him do, or completely forget about rocky and the eridians. he fully decided to give up his life for them!! he loves rocky enough to stop being a coward and do something for someone at his own detriment for once in his life! he doesnât only care about the other human around!!
- a lot of it seems weirdly white savior-esque too. like cmon, the poc is aggressive and violent until the caring white guy breaks down his walls and saves him?? and the poc suddenly sees him as his literal guardian angel??? dawg what are we doing (iâm white so i canât speak too much on this issue but itâs so glaringly obvious that i canât just not say anything at all)
- speaking of which. SIMON IS A POC!! i see so many people drawing him pale as fuck and while yes he hasnât had access to the sun so heâd be washed out, he would not be the same skin shade as ryland, who not only hasnât seen the sun in a long time but is also white as hell.
- also, rocky. iâm not gonna get into book canon here because i know not everyone has read it, but there are still plenty of ways people get him wrong, especially from rylandâs perspective toward him. he is not âjust a little guyâ!! heâs his own autonomous being with agency! stop making him super cutesy and not doing anything with him other than making him an annoyance or a cockblocker (chillax gang the most heâd do is be like âcan i watch for science?â and if he was told to leave he would). also he cares so much about his planet and his mate, he wouldnât just be obsessed with ryland like so many people make him out to be, though he does care about him immensely.
- also stop having ryland say âwhoa itâs been so long since iâve talked to a person!â HE SEES ROCKY AS A PERSON!! that man sees that alien as his best friend, so why the fuck would he ignore his autonomy and shove him to the wayside for the sake of this random guy they picked up?? if you say something like that and donât immediately specify âwhile yes rocky is a person, human connection and touch is really important and ryland has missed that specificallyâ, iâm gonna assume you see rocky as rylandâs pet or something which is an immediate no from me no thank you thatâs fucking disgusting to me give him back his independence please
2. moving on from characterization. iâm not usually one to be a stickler about canon but hereâs what iâve seen people get wrong a lot (these are all just pet peeves btw, i donât actually care that much. i wonât get into book/game exclusive stuff either):
- simon explicitly states that he did not choose to be involved with edenâs cult. stop making it seem like he believes in their shit when he specifically says he doesnât! yeah heâs definitely got religious trauma but not to the extent yâall are making it out to be.
- adrianâs occupation. itâs not said in the book what they do, but the movie explicitly states they control what happens in rylandâs dome (at least the water temperature), therefore theyâre likely an ecologist or something similar.
- timelines! there are specific distances between earth and tau ceti, tau ceti and 40 eridani, etc. stop saying itâd only take a year for them to get from one to another. even with constant acceleration and time dilation, itâd take three to four years to get from tau ceti to 40 eridani, which would equate to about twelve years on earth or erid.
- IT! IS NOT CALLED!! THE DONâT GO CRAZY ROOM!!! where the fuck did yâall even get that. in the movie the computer specifically calls it the âmental health nodeâ. stop saying that âdonât go crazy roomâ is its official name because itâs not.
3. last but not least, my biggest issue with this fandom:
STOP TRYING TO BOTHER MARK AND RYAN ABOUT THIS SHIT.
have we not learned from any of the other fandoms who did stuff like this?? involving creators in fandom spaces when they donât want to be involved is bad. we know this.
also, why are we surprised that mark learned about this fandom?? his job is literally internet. heâs dealt with this shit before. obviously heâs gonna know!!!
i keep seeing people say âmark approves of bloodymary! itâs canon!! simon is the little spoon because mark said so!!!â dude. he was joking. i donât know enough about markâs personality to confirm this, but i interpreted the whole âiâll get to curl up in ryan goslingâs arms and finally be safeâ thing as a joke about how people characterize simon as this traumatized wet cat guy who just needs love to be happy. iâm all for traumatized wet cat guys (iâm a tma fan, ofc i am) but thatâs not all he is!!
okay yeah iâm done ranting now. iâll probably make a separate headcanon post because i canât stop thinking about these guys ever but iâll stop yapping for the moment

in the movie, rylandâs decision to save rocky is revealed to us by him telling stratt that she was right about him on the video he put in the beetles, then launching them.
however, in the book, it goes something like this (slightly edited for brevity):
âŚthe other option: launch the beetlesâall four of them. Each with their own Taumoeba mini-farm and a USB stick full of data and findings.
So thatâs what iâm left with. Option 1: Go home a hero and save all of humanity. Option 2: Go to Erid, save an alien species, and starve to death shortly after.
I sob into my hands. All I see when I close my eyes is Rockyâs dumb carapace and his little arms always fidgeting with something.
Itâs been six weeks since I made my decision. It wasnât easy, but iâm sticking with it.
âSorry, Rocky,â I say.
I spot a tiny speck of Petrova light. I zoom in and search that area. A total of four little dots, barely visible, are on the monitor.
âI know youâd love a beetle to take apart, but I couldnât spare one.â
The beetles, with much smaller spin drives, wonât be visible for much longer. Especially with them zooming off toward Earth and me headed the opposite direction toward the Blip-A.

idk i just like how itâs more rocky-centric than stratt-centric. at this point he cares more about saving rocky than he does about what stratt did to him. also i like the little subvert in there, makes the heart drop a bit lol
sometimes, when i ask a weird question, iâll add the words âquestion markâ to the end of the sentence because why not. my high school english teacher did it, so i picked it up.
since seeing project hail mary four times, iâve subconsciously shortened it to âquestionâ, so now i sound like rocky. i did not notice until my friend (who i dragged to see it with me on watch #3) pointed it out just now.
