In my mind lives an AU where Simon is, out on good behavior, from the same jail as Yancy. The Coltland twins are real. Grace lives in an RV but bums around Colt’s San Fran apartment. Eden blows up the jail to get Simon (who is not there) and Father (who I don’t care about) which lets all of Yancy’s prison family escape, so now he’s trying to commit a perfect crime to get in a cushy jail and he’s taking this boy toy actor with him.

A cosmic being beyond our understanding of reality, who barely glimpses the universe and its understanding of what it sees reshapes reality in an instant. The stars are gone, because they are not part of what the entity understands through its pinhole view of the universe.

And the audience's barebones understanding of Simon's past, the Consolidation of Iron, Eden, it's all just us looking through the pinhole of Simon's perspective and trying to make sense of what we see

What's on the SM-8 blackbox? We don't know the extent of it beyond what Simon hears. There's nothing to truly indicate that anything on that black box will do anything to help solve the Quiet Rapture. Simon already told them there was something alive in the blood sea, and they wouldn't listen. Simon saw it, took pictures, he vanished for days and returned into radio range miraculously alive, and it didn't matter to the C.O.I.

But the SM-8, the research vessel, suddenly that matters. That's hope. Does the data even matter? Or is it just the target of the C.O.I.'s desperation, and the data on it means nothing to us in the end? Maybe it never helped. Maybe Simon's death was for nothing but the desperation of terrified, lost people. Maybe it was everything. Maybe Simon's death mattered. It only matters when the audience makes sense of what we see.
