Amazon made their service worse, to force people to pay for Prime.

Nowadays, if you order from Amazon, there is a week long delay before your package is shipped. (on purpose)

I remember when orders would ship out the same day. (I remember - it was real)

YouTube didn't used to have ads. Now, ads play in the middle of videos. (it's worse than TV ever was)

The best can opener I have owned is over 40 years old. Modern ones just don't hold up as well. (The ones I bought new broke ages ago)

The bread machine my mom got for her wedding lasted 30 years. It's been replaced twice in the last 5 years. (How can you fuck this up?)

The cardboard tubes in the middle of toilet paper rolls have gotten larger. (This too?) Companies increasing the price of the product while selling you less. (REALLY?)

It sounds crazy. (it's the truth) When you talk about it, YOU sound crazy. (it's true)

Even when people believe you (do they really), all they can say is "it sucks". (it's too big) Because the problem is so big, so pervasive, what can we even DO about it???

To get the necessary laws written and passed, we need politicians, to get the politicians elected we need information campaigns, to fund campaigns we need money, and all the money is being hoarded by the people profiting from enshittification. (it sounds so fake)

Planned obsolescence = make sure your product lasts for the warranty (or return window) but not long past that point. This forces folks to buy a similar item again. This term is often used for electronics, but can apply to anything from appliances to zippers.

(eg: Creating a backpack and instead of using strong fabric that will last ten years and look mostly okay that whole time, using cheaper fabric that you know will look great in the store but will start to weaken after being in the sun a few weeks causing tears within a year.)

Shrink-flation = charge the same amount for less product per package. This tricks people into thinking the price of their goods has not increased so they’re less upset when the sticker price goes up later. This term is often used when discussing food or other packaged goods.

(eg: A toilet paper company that decides to reduce the amount of toilet paper in their package by 5% to save on costs, but doesn’t want the general public to catch on, can make the roll itself larger so their packaging machine can still wrap everything the same way, and the only difference is the small print at the bottom of how many sheets there are per roll.)

Enshitification = slowly remove features that used to be included in free or lower cost tiers. This forces people to either put up with worse service for the same price, or pay more to get what they were originally offered. This term is usually used for service based businesses which are often digital/online but don’t have to be.

(eg: a taxi service that used to include carrying bags to your door choosing to charge a fee to carry bags counts as enshitification)
