Penumbra is a congregational, large screen, experimental film-watching series inspired by the fleeting illumination of projectors in a world of shadows cast upon the moon. This first installment of short films, Transference, meditates upon themes of transformation, ritual, motherhood, death, and geographical memory.
The program is curated by Maralie Armstrong-Rial, Katy Mongeau, and Sarah Viviana Valdez and includes new works by the curators alongside films from Lynne Sachs, Jennifer Montgomery, Rose Bush, Kelly Yan, and Asuka Lin. Flyer by Sarah Viviana Valdez
About 'Dweller Between Waters':
The Star card in Tarot is also known as 'The Way Shower' and ‘The Daughter of the Firmament', the 'Dweller between the Waters’. In this video card reading, Two of Pentacles (coins), The World, and The Star appear similarly to the designs from the Rider-Waite deck drawn by Pamela Colman Smith.
The World card however instead features animals native to South and North America. On the top left is a Tero bird instead of a blond man. On the bottom right instead of a lion is an armadillo, which are found in Uruguay and Arkansas (where I spent my childhood).
The Two of Pentacles card features coins from the Naipes card deck, a colonial import from Spain to South America, which became a staple for various traditional card games like 'Truco'.
The Star card depicts a woman with one foot on the shore, representing practicality and grounding, while her other foot is in the water, to represent intuition and inner voice. This video reading reflects on seeking a balance between the material and immaterial, spirit and matter, body and soul while on a journey of healing from deep loss. How can these two be harmonized? What comes to light amidst the darkness of life? What star will be the guide?
