I find some jokes about disabilities to be funny, specifically the ones that I have, I am anemic and find anemic jokes funny, even if they are a little absurd, I don’t stiffen in to a plank and fall over a table when standing up but it’s still funny to me. I understand why some jokes aren’t funny, I have adhd, and adhd jokes when made by another person with adhd is funny but not when it’s made by somebody without adhd, cuz like they don’t get it, idk how to describe it. So now I’m curious when does making a joke about a disability turn into ableism?
I’d say there are two steps when asking this:
1. Is the joke making fun of people having the disability?
and 2. Is it made by someone with that disability?
Take for example, you mention ADHD, so one of those “pov ADHD” videos, they tease at certain traits common with those that have adhd, so this is why that second question is important. If made by someone with adhd, the joke comes from relatability and understanding, maybe some self deprecating humor, but if made by someone without adhd, it comes off as superficial and more bullying than having a laugh about stuff you do, as now it becomes targeted at other people.
we're moving to an internet where children would be banned from reaching out for help and friendship online but abusive parents can post their children's every second online to humiliate and expose them for money with no pushback
"we have to accept the fact that the r word is coming back" NO WE DONTTTT NO WE DONT
The fact that we even have to keep reminding people that saying that shit is bad just seriously sucks.
"there is no way you're not using chatgpt for at least a few things here and there no matter your stance on it" what the FUCK are you talking about

people saying they are not ableist at all, then use "chronically online" as an insult
youre inherently ableist if you call someone that to mock them, i dont care
"Chronically online" is an ableist insult!
oh i didn't know that
Ableism by oversight is a restaurant playing music at just louder than normal conversation level volume (I have a hearing problem and also get overstimulated easily)
This is ableism by oversight! (It's also inconvenient because people around would be speaking louder as well to talk over the music)
I still really like Pokopia, have more ditto sweetness

Binary folks: What's the non-binary equivalent for yaoi/yuri? yaori?
Me: We have trixic (enby/women), toric (enby/men), enbian (enby/enby), and diamoric (enby/anyone). Please don't use yaori to refer to diamoric ships as it is not a word that came from the QL scene like yaoi and yuri did and was made up by people who don't know anything about QL and is just butchering a language.
Binary folks: Um AcTuAlLy [insert whatever bs excuse to not use non-binary centric terms for nonbinary ships]
Why do people have such an issue with non-binary terminology? We have our own words USE THEM!!!
this is exorsexism
i didn't even know there was terminology for enby ships

how it feels to be autistic when your special interest is a cartoon and not mathematics or biology or smth like that
ableism (and ageist? i dont quite know) to me is how a lot of disabilities are seen as "old people things" and "things that only old people do," to the point people are shocked that people who arent old have to have these things.
people associate wheelchairs with old people, people associate canes with old people, people associate back problems with old people. i can go on.
old doesnt equal disabled, young doesnt equal able-bodied. this is just stereotypes.
(sorry if this is worded poorly or anything, its 3am right now. im gonna go to sleep now, i just really needed to get my thoughts out.)
I totally understand, and it is ableism and ageism.
A lot of my friends who are cane users have gotten awkward questioning, as people associate canes with older people.
I think disability aids need to be normalized in multiple age groups
