Just fucking blocking a Harry Potter fan is so satisfying, I cannot reccomend it enough. My pores are clear my crops are watered. This is reminder that I will not tolerate Harry Potter fans at all so if you don't care enough about trans people, Jewish people, or other groups effected by JK Rowling and her work to fucking let go of a subpar fantasy series; I will absolutely fucking block you with no hesitation.
Being trans and neurodivergent doesn't mean that you're excused from me blocking you or that people should go easy on you, it means you should know better. I'm sure there are plenty of people in that fandom who aren't openly bigoted, but to me the fact that they are willing to ignore the real harm that the series and its creator has done to keep enjoying a derivative YA fantasy story no matter what anyone says speaks volumes about their values. And the fact that you ignore it as well, despite being in a community effected by this creator, this series, and the fandom that enables them speaks to your callousness and your cowardice.
I also grew up on HP, my dad read all of the books to me and my sister when we were kids. We attended book release events as a family. I cosplayed as a character once. I went to go see every single movie in theaters. It was a special interest for YEARS. And I let it go, because I knew it was hurting the people I loved and that it was hurting me. Why can't you?
Another one blocked
just the fact that one openly supports her work gives her a platform, end of π -- pretty sure she's claimed that everyone who is a "potterhead" supports team terf anyways so like. you are not exempt - it's not just your money but your open support in spite of the circumstances.
there is other media out there not made by someone who actively uses you and your support as a platform to forward a mass hate movement
-signed yet another trans ND person who grew up hyperfixating on the books and movies
Like, there are so many other magic school stories that you can support and make fanfics about that are often much more inventive and there are even queer positive ones.
A few options off the top of my head that I'm personally a fan of:
The Owl House
Mary and the Witch's Flower
Little Witch Academia (Admittedly haven't watched this one all the way through, but it's really fun)
Hollow Fields (Also haven't read this one all the way through. This one is also more of a steampunk mad scientist school than magic, but it's pretty close in execution.)
Not to mention JKR gets royalties for Harry Potter. Any support of the franchise is directly supporting her.
It is also of note that Warner Brothers, one of the biggest entertainment media companies in the world, owns the rights to all Harry Potter movies, video games, comics, toys, clothes, and any other existing or potential merchandise. It is one of their biggest IPs and they pay royalties to JKR everytime they do something with it. As long as HP is a property with a large fandom and a huge pop culture footprint, they will KEEP making Harry Potter shit that lines JKR's pockets because they know it will be profitable. You don't need to pay for anything for WB's market analysts to see that there still exists a huge potential market that they can target.
As long as enough people care about Harry Potter enough to torrent the movies, write fanfiction, post about it on social media, cosplay as the characters, and sell handmade merch on their etsy store, WB will consider this an IP worth having.
Not to mention that by keeping HP relevant, you are keeping JKR relevant. People listen to her because she is the author of Harry Potter and not a transphobic former ya novelist who wrote a series that is antisemitic, ableist, transphobic, and supports slavery. If people stop supporting her work, more people will start to see her for what she is; a sad and washed up bigot that is friends with far right hate groups.
How fucking dare any of y'all potterheads claim that your unwillingness to let go isn't doing any harm when this franchise's relevance, that you prop up, is propping up a prominent bigot who is helping push a dangerous campaign against my human rights. I am scared every day about what might happen to me and my community because of policies made by people who support this woman and you have the audacity to come up in my notes and try to tell me it's actually totally fine and cool for you to still boost her literary vomit?
FUCK YOU
i made this post 4 years ago and it's still true
since then i have observed that the majority of trans people still hanging on to this shitty fantasy franchise for babies are tme. this is because the terf ideology that jkr promotes and that is accepted by her fandom is transmisogynistic first and generally transphobic second. terfs often deploy the tactic of welcoming in afab trans people because they usually see them as lost women that they can "save" by convincing them to detrans. they also know that, if they can build friendship and trust with any kind of tme trans person, they can begin to slowly feed them transmisogynistic ideas that will cause division within the trans community and further isolate them from that community, pushing them into their's. and the tmes keep falling for it because they care more about that magic little white boy than trans women and materially benefit from transmisogyny, not considering how they will be crushed under heel by the transphobia that transmisogyny is a gateway to.
also worth pointing out: jkr and the hp series itself is, besides being transmisogynistic, transphobic, antisemitic, ableist, and pro-slavery, also generally racist, fatphobic, homophobic, colonialist, and imperialist. and just like how the majority of trans people who are in the fandom are tme, the majority of the fandom in general is white and don't care enough about anti-racism to quit the series because they materially benefit from white supremacy.
potterheads are a hate group, and being a part of it means you are endorsing and pushing the ideas of terfs. i don't care if you are a perfect little angel baby in your heart of hearts; your actions hurt people.
