Minimum Consideration for Minimum Wage for Minimum Skill
If you live in Indiana, you probably wonder how middle-class families survived on $5.15/hr just a few years ago. Shoot! So many unskilled workers are struggling to make ends meet on $7.25 nowadays! Just be happy you're not making a minimum wage of $2.00 in Oklahoma right now.
Now think for a moment. How many people did you know went without before the minimum wage increase? Was it more than today? Probably not. The economy was more stable at that time, the cost of living lower.
Workers of the World Unite! Yeah, unite and think.
Do you think when you receive that raise to the $10.10/hr that you're calling for, life will be cushy? It'll be like you got the biggest raise ever for a cashier or clerk, right?
It will just make milk go up to $6/gallon and gas $7.50. This is how you fuel inflation.
The value of your work will still be the same, but you're putting a higher price tag on it. The same applies to the things we buy every day. The value of groceries and rent are going to stay constant. We won't want groceries or a home any more than we do now, but we're going to have to pay more for them.
And what happens when you're employer no longer is able to pay all those high wages? He will fire some of you. Believe it or not, your employer does have a limited amount of resources and that includes money for wages.
Are you a young to middle age white male? Well that's fine. You'll probably keep your job. I'm really sorry if you're an elderly immigrant woman with a visa because this is just going to be another causeway for racism, sexism, and general discrimination at large meaning you're going to be out of the job and forced to look else where for work.
The theory is to pump money into the population so they'll go forth and stimulate the economy, buying luxuries and increasing the utility in their life. Instead we're going to be putting even more people out of work.
Wait, weren't we just complaining about the unemployment rate the other day?
So let me get this straight, we have more people out of work that will need support...so this means higher taxes? According to D. Eric Schansberg, "Indiana imposes the highest state income taxes on households at the poverty line." So all that extra money we just made plus some is just going to go back to the government to pay the people we put out of work by raising the minimum wage. Yeah, that sounds about right.
Oh, right. Indiana has that covered. With this new bill, minimum wage workers making $10.10/hr won't drift into a higher tax bracket. Then where is this money going to come from so we don't totally screw over the people we put out of work?
Unskilled workers want more money without increasing the value of their work.
We're going to devalue the dollar, but it's okay because you'll be making $10.10/hr.
Discrimination will have more temptation to rear its ugly head in the workplace.
The unemployment rate will skyrocket even farther up.
Taxes will need to be raised to pay for the unemployed workers, but won't be so Indiana's going to be going into dept-or struggling families will really be at a loss.
Let's stop and think. What could you do instead of demanding more money for the same work?
Well, I know when I was growing up, my mom either made me do more work or better work to earn a higher allowance. The amazing thing is, this concept applies to grown ups too!
Instead of striking, why don't you take that time and energy and put it towards making yourself more valuable?
Try harder at work to earn raises and promotions.
Get extra training in order to qualify for a better position.
If possible, go to school to really make yourself indispensable. You would be a huge asset to many companies at this point!
So instead of complaining about your situation enough to screw over the entire state, go do something about your situation.
