if i see one more person criticizing hudson’s portrayal of shane im genuinely gonna tweak out. for context, i was diagnosed with ASD level 1 (basically high functioning autism, same as shane) at age 8 (2016). it’s very hard to tell when someone has this kind of autism because there aren’t obvious external differences from neurotypical people. we’re able to communicate without assistance, we mask a lot so physically there aren’t big differences in the way we hold ourselves (although i still dont know what to do with my hands), so most just think we’re shy, maybe a little bit socially awkward but that’s about it. as you get to know someone with this kind of autism you realize little quirks that might be unique to them and some that a lot of others on this part of the spectrum share; a lot of which hudson’s portrayal of shane shows so naturally. a lottt happens on the inside and not all of it shows physically (which is why most of us aren’t the best gift receivers iykyk), there’s a lot of masking which gets exhausting and overwhelming at some point. there’s also social mirroring that’s subtle yet so well done by hudson. i can think of the scene where shane chirps at scott on the ice, and he sees him spit, so he spits, because it seems like that’s the way to do it. or when ilya asks “you still want?” and shane goes “i still want :)”. its little things like these where i saw myself being represented. the recipe being for 8, so he makes 8 burgers. the last bite of the tuna melt that must remain uneaten (idk why we do that genuinely its subconsciously done). the teary eyes ≠ i’m crying (since no tears are falling). the consistency in ordering ginger ale, the lack of eye-contact in general, the little panic attacks, the little routines that make life go round, ect ect (i could go on for days) overall, i have never ever felt more seen in a character in my life. i didnt understand when people noticed my little quirks and told me about them, but seeing hudson as shane finally made me see some things about myself. im eternally grateful for the well done representation and shane hollander couldnt be in better hands!!!

As another person with high functioning autism I 100% agree. I honestly don’t think I’ve seen high functioning autism representation that’s so close to my own experiences and it’s a huge part of why I like this show so much.
