This has been said time and again, but I rewatched PHM with my family yesterday and it's just—

I could never explain the visceral reaction to the scenes of Grace being forced into the Hail Mary to them. Because they aren't aromantic. Because they don't even believe it's a real thing. Because not having a relationship that is seen as 'natural' is not a defining trait for them.

"You don't even have a dog," but it's aromantic people who get the crappy beds or rooms on trips bc they don't have a partner. Folks who don't get invited to things because they are 'couples' stuff' and will never be. The questions, the judging, the 'oh, you'll find someone's. Being less than others because romance isn't something they feel or want, because their life isn't lived in the way everyone else lives it.

"You don't even have a dog" and it's an aromantic person enjoying their life as they want.

Grace loses his glasses one day on the ship and he's going to ignore it. He doesn't want to bother anyone, everyone on this ship is trying to save the world, and he's going to go and ask someone, distract someone from their work, just so he can ask if they've seen his glasses?? Hell no

So he does his best to act natural, he does the work ha can easily do without them and then starts working on the not so easy stuff. There is a meeting and he sees stratt for the first time that day and she immediately clocks his shit.

I want a Grace that wakes up and never remembers that Stratt was the one that betrayed him. I want a Grace who doesn't remember how Stratt was just how he felt about her, how extraordinary he thought this woman was, how he was willing to trail around her like a dog. How her voice sounded singing.

I want a Grace that sends those videos back to her talking about all of that openly. Like she was the only person he could fully rely on on earth because ofcourse, she was so amazing. I want Stratt watching those videos and just seeing Grace look into the camera like he's staring into her soul and he only sees light, I want a Stratt who's reluctant to show his discoveries to anyone else even if she needs to because that look was ment for her even if she doesn't know how it still exists after what she did.

From an RPG perspective, I've been struggling for years to explain that "playing a character in a myth" and "treating a mythic world as if it were real" are two fundamentally different things. A part of this frustration is that I want a whole lot more of the former and a whole lot less of the later.

So, I'm sure scholars probably have a more technical definition of "myth" than I'm using. I'm primarily talking about when elements of a story are meant to be received and processed emotionally rather than logically.

For example, we might have a character that wears jade armor and sits on a throne of ruby. Now if your mind starts thinking things like what the implications are for the culture and economy of a society that uses jade for armor and ruby for furniture design then you're thinking in the wrong direction. Same if you start thinking about the actual real world properties of jade and ruby and what you could possibly make with such a large and plentiful supply of it. No. Just. Stop. Don't do that. Instead, be *emotional*. What *feelings* does such an image/character invoke you. Disgust at their opulence? Awe at their power? Respect for their commanding presence? Fear? Now have your character react *to that feeling*. What emotion do YOU want your character to reflect back. In an RPG, your character TOO is a pile of evocative aesthetics in both image and action. Do a thing that will evoke a feeling IN ME as a fellow player at the table. You can't control WHAT feeling I have, but you can do something evocative, "logic" of the situation be damned.

i kinda see what you are getting at, hopefully. i think it's really mostly about being impressionistic, isn't it? my mind immediately drifts to pulp fantasy, to which such "loose" imagery seems to be very important. i personally don't get much from it mostly because i'm not that great at visualizing. i could never really get into howard because of it, for example. would you say this generally applies outside of fantasy roleplaying, though?

Pulp fantasy (and actual mythology) is where you see it at its boldest. But I'm not talking *purely* about visuals it can apply to "entities" whose only "logic" is their symbolic/metaphorical place in the narrative.

You see this a lot in standalone horror novels that don't get caught up in their own "lore." My absolute favorite example of this is "The Library Policeman" by Stephen King. The creature in that book and how it "works" is wholly defined by the scope of the protagonist's personal trauma. It does not "exist" nor has "logic" independent of the protagonist's emotional journey. Sure, it all makes "sense" in that story but trying to tease out the creature as an independent entity with a consequential "existence" simply falls apart.

I would also point to something like Frank Miller's Sin City stories. The characters are BOLD archetypes with no substance behind their evocative presence. Senator Rourk is a complete tautology. He is a Senator because he's rich and powerful and is rich and powerful because he is a Senator. Things happen because Rourk wants them to happen. By what means? What's the power structure propping him up? Who are his allies? Who are enemies? What is the network composing his wealth? These things are not only unanswered, I would suggest they are UNASKED. It simply doesn't matter. Rourk might as well be Zeus.

It is that element of UNASKING, I am focusing on.

This is one of the reasons film franchises begin to lose their luster because later films are often built by asking questions the earlier films not only didn't ask, but were never designed to answer. "Fandom" may be clamoring all the time for "answers" but they're always disappointed when they get them and for good reason. The questions never should have been asked in the first place.

I'm usually a huge fan of fantasy/sci-fi logistics, groundedness, biology, etc., but this is also how you get people constantly trying to "solve" vampires by saying "well they drink blood so that means they are scientifically hematophages and there is no problem with them drinking blood of any animal because other hematophages can drink the blood of any animal" and "if it's transmissible by bite that means it's a virus or bacteria that causes a mutation."

No, this was never a legend meant to operate on a 21st century biology, the blood is blood but it's also life, and so on.

Sometimes the answer isn't "it's magic" because the author hasn't thought about it, sometimes the answer is "it's magic" because the author has thought about it.

Exactly. You can pick and choose. In fact, supernatural things become MORE scary when they operate spiritually when everything else operates realistically. Yup, the world works exactly the way we believe it to, oh except this *thing*. This thing is unbounded by reality. It has uncomfortable existential implications or reaches into questions that have no answers. That's scary.

Well i think the reason Atla fans keep insisting their favorite nickelodeon cartoon isn't for children, is because people use the fact that it's for children to insist that it's bad and worthless art that you're stupid for liking

i do think "avatar isn't for kids because it discusses genocide" is extremely silly not just because it aired on nickelodeon but because the majority of the show is focused on children having adventures and learning life lessons, but people who praise the show without acknowledging it's age demographic also getting dunked on for allegedly "not watching shows for adults" which to me does seem to heavily imply there is actually something extremely wrong with enjoying fiction for children.

the actual praise of the show here was labeling it “the only show with a big ensemble cast with a perfect ending” which is just a very “read another book” feeling inducing claim. that original qrt is smug and dragging this larger discourse’s baggage into it, one that happens biweekly, and it does weaponize its demographic against it, but u will not convince me that, as an example, discussion of atla by its fans only takes this shape bc of ppl being demeaning. most atla glaze i see online is like this, and u can argue about which phenomenon comes first and feeds its opponents’ annoying overcorrection

I think another thing that poisons the well in these discussions is the way fans of these media will loudly insist that they're not just cartoons for children because they deal with heavy issues, but a lot of them will gladly retreat to "it's for children" as a defense when they're criticized on the simplistic framing and handling of these issues.

With atla specifically, I can't find the post rn so I don't have the screenshots, but I remember a post from a couple years ago (I wanna say 2023 or 2024?) where OP made a jab at US citizens and the way they benefit from US imperialism, and someone reblogged it telling her to watch atla season 3 to "educate herself" on why the common citizens of an empire are normal people and not evil monsters and you shouldn't treat them like that.

And then when they received the dismissive responses about the silliness of telling someone on the receiving end of american imperialism to "educate herself" about imperialism by watching an american children's cartoon, they did the whole "it's not just a show for children it deals with heavy topics like genocide and imperialism" thing.

But then when people started pointing out the ways in which atla presents a simplistic view of these topics with a clear American Liberal bias there were a lot of responses like "lol why are these bozos complaining that my favorite nickelodeon cartoon does not represent perfect ideologically sound marxist theory". And when I saw that post I remember thinking like. Idk if you walk into a conversation demanding that the people involved in it take your favorite nickelodeon cartoon seriously as a source of political theory you don't get to be mad when people take you at your word and decide to point out the ways in which it fails as such. Like do you want the cartoon to be treated as a Serious Show with Important Things to Say, or as a silly children's show whose ideological undertones shouldn't be scrutinized too seriously?

I've joked in the past about how I want an Arthurian adaptation set in one of those bits of the Middle Ages where nobody has any working infrastructure and all the kings and lords are flat broke but they're still trying to make it work, but it occurs to me that a high fantasy version of that would also be kind of awesome. The High King in his grand palace (shitty hill fort) sending his Holy Knights (a dozen guys and a donkey) on a perilous journey (a half-day's march) to face the Dread Necromancer's undead scourge (exactly six zombies). The Necromancer's immortal death-knight champion (a skeleton in a hat) comes out to meet them astride a terrible hornèd beast (a reanimated cow because they couldn't find a dead horse).

what impresses me most about the creation of “Samalamadingdong” is the operational security. It wasn’t just coordinated embezzlement (though it objectively was that). There were so many different lies told to so many different people, coworkers and friends and family. There were secret slack channels and calendars dual-used alongside Sam-occupied ones. There were blurred Zoom meetings with people smashing plates just offscreen/out of hearing, a long-term secret warehouse rental, a Variety reporter—who presumably had to carefully tell their boss—Sam’s wife, and dozens of cast, crew, and other creatives involved—and yet nobody outside the carefully chosen people knew. Least of all Sam.

I’m accustomed to the “practically speaking, that could never actually be kept secret” anti-conspiracy argument, and I stand by it. There is no way NASA/the US govt in 1969 could’ve faked the moon landing and we wouldn’t know. But the cast and crew of Game Changer on Dropout.tv? Maybe! They! Could!!
