Genya slumped down in her chair after a long day of running around the palace, trying to get things done. Saints, her job was much harder when she was avoiding her friends. Maybe that was a sign she should stop, and actually have a conversation about what was troubling her.
She wanted what was best for Ravka, and for Grisha. Of course she did. But from what she had heard, the man who had started a civil war, throwing Ravka into years of turmoil, and who had turned his back on any Grisha who crossed him, was here in the palace, being treated as an honoured guest.
Surely Nikolai had his reasons. But she couldn't deny that it stung. He didn't get it. He hadn't been there for the years that the Darkling had ruled over the Little Palace, and he hadn't seen the wreckage that the Darkling had left amongst the Grisha who'd trusted him, once upon a time.
Maybe her grievance was more personal than she would admit. The man who'd facilitated her assault was back in the palace. That was enough to cut right to the core of the strength she'd built up over the years, revealing the scared little girl, trying to be brave so she could be the Darkling's favourite soldier.
Or maybe she just needed some sleep. But - damn. She still had a mountain of paperwork to get through. With a sigh, she sat upright and started leafing through the pile that was stacked on her desk.
David rubbed his eyes tiredly as he left the workshops. The last few days he had been occupied with helping Nikolai coming up with the last important things he might need for his journey, which, he wasn't entirely sure if it was more the prince trying to escape a situation of his own making than trying to handle the urgent crisis; it was a bit of both, probably. Out of the inner circle David probably was the one who took the little revelation the easiest. There was anger lingering under the surface for what was done to Genya, and protectiveness that made sure she was never alone with Nikolai, since the Darkling could only appear with him in tow, yes. But other than that, he tolerated it, much more interested in the specifics of such a thing being possible and what it would mean for the future, what could be done. It was the first ever case he heard of, with not even the formerly powerful Grisha General having many answers, so he was flipping through books over books if he wasn't working on the experimental crisis, wanting to understand.
Passing one of the big windows, he noticed Nikolai heading towards the stables, almost being swallowed by the darkening daylight and wondered if he'd try to talk to Zoya and Genya about the issue at hand before he left in the morning hours. It didn't even pass his attention that the man was more nervous and tense since the revelation, wanting to clear the air and never succeeding; hard to imagine he wanted to leave for perhaps several months without sorting it out. He shook off his thoughts; it didn't seem like the Darkling did appear since the dramatics of the meeting, at least not with anyone around, so maybe the problem had solved itself?
Fumbling with his notebook he ducked into the shared space with Genya, for some reason surprised to see her here at this time of the day; as far as he knew she was very bound with Little Palace matters over the last time too. His surprise changed to delight, the notebook disappeared into the inner pocket of his kefta as he stepped to the table. "I didn't ex-expect you to be here already", he greeted her, ink stained fingers softl squeezing her shoulder, "are you alright?" His dark eyes wandered over her face, noting the tiredness that lingered beneath her eyes. She probably didn't get much sleep lately.
Genya smiled up at David. "Yes, I'm alright."
She needed to trust David. She knew that he had been there in that meeting with the Darkling. There must have been a good reason for it. She had to keep holding on to that thought. David knew her, probably better than anybody else did. He'd once threatened to kill a man simply for praising the Darkling in front of her.
If even he was involved in whatever was going on, it had to be absolutely essential. She couldn't allow herself to believe otherwise. She'd seen how this whole situation had upset Zoya and made her doubt Nikolai's love for her; she couldn't allow the same thing to happen to her own relationship, not when David was usually the person keeping her steady.
"I wasn't expecting you to be here either, you're usually in the workshop until much later. Is everything okay?"

Who was your first crush?
That's... a good question. I actually think it might have been David. I'm sure I had small crushes on people back home before I came to the Little Palace, but I don't really remember any of them, so for all intents and purposes, I'd say my first real crush was David.
Little funfact!
When I was 14, I dyed my hair black because I thought it would look cooler and more grown up. I could've asked Genya to tailor it, but no, I impulsively bought a bottle of hair dye from a pedlar, locked myself in my room and used it.
It made me look like a corpse and I hated it. I wouldn't leave my room and tried to get rid of it and it turned blueish-green.
When I finally went to Genya to help me out I looked like a scarecrow. Of course @ask-genyasafin was able to fix it in under an hour and I could've saved myself a lot of internal drama.
Nikolai, are you trying to say black hair looks corpselike?
Please let me see a picture. I'll even give you one of tailored blonde me
No, I'm saying that *I* looked like a corpse because of how pale I was back then and I think also recovering from the flu? Not sure anymore, but I looked awful. Not black hair in general, that would be nonsense.
Unfortunately no such picture exists as I was so devastated about what the mirror showed me, I'm sorry, my love. I could ask Genya or one of the trainee tailors to repeat it?
I could absolutely repeat it, it was hilarious the first time round and I'm sure it would be equally amusing to see again.
But we leave out the green part, right? Right??
We want it to be an accurate representation of the original so Zoya can see what it was like, don't we?
Technically, Zoya only asked for the black hair. Soooo...loophole 😎
Oh, alright, I'll be nice to you this time. I might even try to make it look less terrible
Genya, you're a literal angel if I ever saw one
But Genya, I need it to be accurate.
(passive aggressively) I am your queen you listen to me.
We'll see, I suppose. It's not like I have a reference image to work from, so I doubt it'll be 100% accurate anyway. It was more than a decade ago, after all. (Saints, we're getting old.) But I can try to make it accurate!

What’s your favorite thing about Zoya?
How am I supposed to pick one thing, when there are so many amazing things about her? I love how she doesn't water herself down for other people, just so they can easier deal with her. I love that she's not afraid to speak her mind, that she's loyal, smart and strong, that, even though she might complain, she won't give up. I love that she's literally and metaphorically, lightning in a bottle/in person, she's storm but she's also an anchor. I love her sarcasm and grumpiness, as much as her happiness. Zoya is that type of person that keeps surprising you with how multilayered she is. I love that nose crinkle when she laughs from the bottom of her heart, how the air around her always seems a little crackling and even more so when she's angry, the way she speaks certain words. I could never choose "one favourite thing" about Zoya, there are too many of them.
And you say David and I are the cutest couple! This is so sweet, I'm so glad the two of you found your way to each other
is the red your natural hair colour or did you choose to tailor it that way? that skill must be so practical!
Red is my natural hair colour, though I've changed the shade slightly. My natural colour is a less vivid shade of red, which I chose to brighten up when I was younger. And yes, it's a very useful skill to have - although I've grown to place less value on my appearance as I got older, being beautiful can be advantageous sometimes, shall we say.
do u think zoya is too bossy? does she make a good queen for ravka?
What? Of course I don't think she's too bossy. Her job is, quite literally, to be the boss. She takes it really seriously, and I think that can only ever be a good thing, considering the number of monarchs Ravka has had who don't take ruling seriously at all. On an interpersonal level, I still disagree - Zoya has strong opinions, of course, and I really admire her for that, but she never tries to force them on us.
Zoya is a wonderful queen. She knows what the people of Ravka need, and she's willing to make sure they get it. She really and truly cares about this country and its people, particularly those who don't always get enough support or recognition - Grisha, the Suli, those in poverty, young girls and women, and so on.
I think that under her rule, Ravka is on track to become more equal than it ever has been before, which is absolutely incredible. Laws are being passed to prevent the injustices of the past from repeating themselves, and to keep our people safe in general.
(By the way, my inbox is feeling quite strange lately, between this and the question about whether I blame David for the Darkling's treatment of Alina - I'm sure you meant your question respectfully, but I don't like the idea that people are trying to get me to speak negatively about my friends. I trust the people in my life wholeheartedly, and I'm not going to badmouth them!)
What are 3 words you would use to describe yourself?
Oh, this is a tricky one. I think I'm going to go with: loyal, organised, and bold.
Loyal, because my friends are perhaps the most important thing in my life. The people who've stuck by me have made a world of difference, and I'd never abandon or betray any of them.
Organised, because it's the part of my job that's the most calming. Amongst all the chaos, I find it almost relaxing to be able to settle down and plan a festival, or whatever else. It helps me make sense of whatever else is going on.
And bold, because it's a trait I've cultivated in myself over the years, and one which has served me well. I never want to sacrifice my own interests for those of power, and I love that I have a clearer idea of what those interests are and how to protect them.
And brave. And caring. And smart, strong, creative and patient. I know the question said only three traits, but I feel like it's important to mention those too.
Saints, David, it's too early in the morning to make me cry. You're so sweet <3
Did I say something wrong? I didn't want to make you cry, I'm sorry!
Not at all, I promise. Crying in a good way, because what you said was so lovely 💗 you said exactly the right thing, my love

What are your thoughts about David having such a huge part of violating Alina during the Darkling's dark deeds? Since he was the reason that the Darkling could gain more control over her, do you blame him for what he did?
The short answer is no. Just like I don't blame Zoya or anybody else for serving in the Darkling's army, or Alina for going along with his plans before she found out the truth. Or myself, for furthering his plot to kill the King.
We were all under his control, in one way or another. Whether because he lied to us, because he manipulated us, or because he had some other means of power over us.
David and Alina have talked it through, and it's Alina's business how she feels about it - though I believe she and I have come to the same conclusion.
The Darkling is to blame for what he did, both to Alina and to all of us. And what matters most is what David did once he knew the Darkling's true intentions, not how he behaved while he was being lied to.
What was your first impression of Alina? And how did it change?
Saints, this is a tough one, because my opinion of Alina changed very rapidly in a very short time. My first impression of her was that she was incredibly stubborn and perhaps a little naïve - and then I got to see her come into her powers and grow so much in just a few months. She became my closest friend, and I'm so thrilled to have had that.
There were some more complicated feelings bound up in that, of course, particularly during the period when I was still working alongside the Darkling. But Alina always tried to stand by me, and never once gave up on me, even when it would have been more than justified.
I think she's changed since then in some ways, but not much. She seems a lot more settled in herself than she was when we first met, which is brilliant. (She also seems more tired, but I imagine that has something to do with raising dozens of children!) I still consider her one of my best friends, and one of the most lovely people I know.
