OOC for the anon!
who asked about joining the rp with an OC :D I'm answering here because I need to think about your initial question to Nikolai first and since they're both in the same message, lol I hope you see this! Generally OCs are welcome to join! But it also depends, if you want to join a plot that has already multiple people writing in (as in example the one with Nikolai, Aleksander, David and Zoya), this should be talked through with the whole group first :D If you just want to join one of my open rp posts that hover around with no other reply to it, you're very welcome to just straight jump into it :) If you like to write something completely new, we can do that too. That being said I'm quite busy with work next week, so I don't know how fast I am with replies ^^ Also: If you like Grishaverse OC writing, I'd have an amazing site for you to join if you're interested XD It's Grishaverse related, but with OCs only and you can write roleplays there too and also do much much more :D either way, I'm happy about everyone who wants to write with me xD
OOC: Yes about the last bit, PLEASE join wogv, my literal home
now that you are queen what measure have u taken to ensure the safety and respect toward suli culture
I mostly let them be, but I have banned open discrimination against them. Of course, no one is to know whether people still dislike them internally. I certainly hope not, as they are an equal race to Ravkans.
Whereโs your favorite place youโve ever been on vacation?
Quite possibly, my aunt's house. The last time I went there I recieved terrible news, but that was so long ago, before I even met Alina or Nikolai..
My least favourite is easily ketterdam, but I believe everyone already knows that.
The long rides through the forest did only as much for his nerves and not only was he still quite restless, the demon was harder to control again too, as if the events on the island influenced it too. He didn't trust his own ability to keep it under control and returned to be locked in for the night until he felt more secure again. Some risks not even he thought were worth taking. Now, he was pacing in front of the door to the war room. He made the decision that the Triumvirate and Zoya needed to know the full truth about what happened back there. Not only for the safety of the country, but because he owed them that much as his most trusted people. But Saints, it was a topic he dreaded talking about. How did you tell the people that mattered to you, that the man they all suffered under and that should be quite literally be unreachably locked away holding the world together, reached out to him in a way he still wasn't sure even he understood? Because in all the years of the demon's existence within him, this had never happened before in such a way. Let alone the sympathy and understanding this little conversation stirred in him. At least, so he thought, he didn't have to share that with his people.
There was no way around it. With a last deep breath Nikolai straightened his shoulders and pushed the doors to the war room open, maybe the first person to arrive.
Aleksander, as was his wont these days, trailed behind the boy king. He wasn't privy to what Nikolai was planning, not precisely, but the tension was clear in the blond's shoulders.
He should have stayed away, perhaps. Just gone back into the darkness and pain that everyone would rather he be in. Staying around this long was only courting trouble. But with eternity looming over him--and Aleksander was all too familiar with the true concept of eternity--he found that he couldn't overcome the weak and selfish desire to put it off for as long as he could. He had the connection, after all, and the king seemed willing enough to let it go unquestioned.
Aleksander didn't want to go back into the dark again while he still had the choice.
"Weak," his mother's voice sneered at him. "Wanting makes us weak, boy. I raised you to be strong."
He looked around the War Room for something to take his mind off of her haranguing. He was as good as dead twice over; strength meant nothing anymore. And he had given up so much.
The least he could do was want a few years in the sun, even if it was as a ghost tethered to a mortal man.
The war room was empty of people. It wasn't much of a surprise since he gave notice of the meeting quite shortly before and they all had their duties. It was only his own impatience that made him want to get through with it as fast as possible or not at all. Like ripping off a bandaid. "Someone needs to start writing down all the improbable things that happen in this country. Could become a legendary fairytale book. It doesn't even need to be filigreed, because nobody is going to believe half of it anyway", he vocalised his thoughts to let out some of the nervous energy as he leaned against the desk to study the map on the wall for the billionth time. He had questions about the connection. And he wasn't entirely sure if he should tolerate it at all. But Ravka had bigger problems at the moment and he wasn't bothered enough by his presence to look for solutions yet. And so far, Aleksander was quite harmless in this state. Which was a reckless thought, part of him knew. Harmless was a term that should never be used with him. "The Triumvirate and Zoya need to know about this", he gestured between himself and the ghostly apparation of Aleksander, "which is why this meeting is going to happen." Nikolai wasn't sure if he had mentioned that or just stayed in his mind about this meeting nor how much Aleksander was able to notice in this form about what was going on. "Which leads to a few questions, which they will probably ask." Why didn't you tell us right away? Why do you tolerate this? Why aren't you looking for solutions? He could almost hear them directed towards him. "They will want to know how you made this possible and why now, I suppose. Where your limits are-" if you can be a danger for them again "- if I can prove that I'm not just imagining things. Really fond of this one, because I'm still not sure about that either. We don't know if they'll be able to see you." The captives back on the island couldn't. But then again, their people had more connections from the past to the Darkling, so maybe it would be different. "If you intend to find a solution out of the misery that is the tear in the world and exist as your own person again", he finished; a question that was most pressing in his mind and of which he wasn't sure if he wanted to find an answer to.
Aleksander snorted at that. "I could always add some tales of my own to that," he said absentmindedly, trailing his fingers delicately over the ridged backs of the chairs. He missed the textures of the wood, polished oak and cherry wood. His own chair--the one that he had used for centuries on and off, had carved little designs into blindly, idly into the underside to keep his sanity while he was ignored again and again--had been conspicuously replaced. He had no doubt that they had smoothed out the carvings under the table as well, if they had even noticed them at all.
He perched on the table, still disconcertingly young-looking and pale in his dark clothes. Back in the palace, he was wearing simple peasant's garb several hundred years out of date, with soft boots embroidered with figures of his grandfather's amplifiers. It was nice, being able to choose what he could present himself in without trying to maintain an image anymore.
"Must you tell them?"
The question was soft, barely louder than a whisper.
Must you condemn me a third time?
Nikolai genuinely considered that for a moment: "It would certainly make time pass faster, if not also give you something to be remembered for that's not war." Although he doubted a book under his name wouldn't erase what people believed about him. On the other hand, there were also enough people worshipping him as a Saint. So who knew. People could be surprising. Watching Aleksander, he wondered how being back at this place made him feel. What it made him think about. If it was unpleasant to be in this room, where he made so many of his choices that painted him both, villain and saint. Or if he met this room with fondness. His own thoughts were interrupted by the question so quietly he almost missed it. Nikolai hesitated for a moment, thinking again about it. "Yes, I'm afraid", he then confirmed slowly, "they were having my back since before my coronation, dealt with the demon despite the danger I've put them into. I owe them my honesty. It's also a safety concern. We don't know how this is going to affect either of us on the long term. They're already getting suspicious too. I'd rather talk to them before it comes out like I was keeping secrets. I understand that this is very uncomfortable for you-" He stopped mid sentence, before backtracking: "I could also just tell them about the island situation and leave out the part that you're still present? Would that be easier for you?"
He just finished his question, when a knock appeared at the door.
David had been buried under chaos of blueprints and equations when a servant brought the message that Nikolai wanted to speak to them. Only casually did he take notice of that and simply kept working. Leoni, who worked with him through Nikolai's sketches, finally covered the table to get David to pay attention to her: "David. War room." "But-" "It must be important if Nikolai sends a messenger instead of coming down here", she pointed out. David sighed and gave his covered materials a wishful look, but pulled off his gloves, shoving his notebook into the pocket of his kefta. "Fine. Please do not move anything, I have my order", he pointed out, before making his way from the workshops to the war room. He was watching out for Genya on his way, but didn't run into her, so maybe she was already in the room. Someone must be, since he heard Nikolai's voice. After knocking shortly, he entered the room: "You needed to talk to us?"
Aleksander's breath caught in his throat for a moment, response completely forgotten when he saw the familiar messy head poke into the War Room.
David. He was alive.
Oh, this precious, brilliant child. He looked so much older, so much more tired, than he had the last time Aleksander had seen him. Not all from the loss of baby fat, but from the shadows under his eyes, markers of lost innocence. He had hoped to spare David that for as long as he could.
At least he had survived. So many hadn't. He wondered if, perhaps, this meant that Genya could smile again. She had been so angry before. So lost.
A flash of frustration crossed Nikolai's face, as they were interrupted before he could get any answers. But he was quick to slam his mask back on: "David, yes. Thank you for coming. I'm sorry to keep you from your workshop." The Fabrikator's appearance seemed to surprise Aleksander. That certainly was a rare occurence. "Until the others arrive, do you have any progress for me in the matter of the island experiments?", he wanted to know. His knowledge about Grisha power only ran to a certain depth and as much as he wanted to be around for every step of the solution finding, he had other duties to fulfill, so he left David to it.
The brush with death had been close call in the night of Fjerda's bombing. When he was rescued from under the rubble, nobody knew if he'd make it through the following night and his injuries had been severe. If it wasn't for the hard relentless work of the Healers, he certainly wouldn't be here anymore. Now, he had the impression that something was off. He couldn't put a finger on it, but the room felt fuller than it actually was. Maybe he was just too tired. He gave an indifferent shrug when Nikolai apologised for pulling him away from the workshop, but the question about the progress he could answer. He pulled out his notebook and opened the page with the info; Nadia had suggested he summarised it without his usual scientific additions, so talking about it wouldn't take hours. "You weren't to be found, so I spoke to Zoya about it first", he opened the reply, "your last state of information is the bone transplant, yes? They also used blood transfusions, which caused some of the deaths and uhm..." His finger nervously tapped on the notebook: "The Grisha that hasn't woken up yet? She's most likely a first test object to a fusion used with merzost and...and we think we might need to dip into working with bits of it too, to..to reverse it? We didn't do anything yet, because, well we didn't want to do anything without speaking to both of you first, but...it would be an option." He knew about the risks of it, theoretically and second-hand experience, but he couldn't help being a bit excited about it, too. Learning about something theoretically was one thing, but active use was something else. David still couldn't shake off the feeling of being observed, so his eyes wandered through the room, lingering at the place where Aleksander was perched on the table for a moment. It almost looked like this spot was little...blurry? and darker than the rest of the room. "I have heard about Tidemakers that can walk through walls on parem, changing their own solidity. It almost feels like one of them is in here."
Aleksander found himself leaning in, fascinated despite himself. This...parem, he could not understand, but merzost... Merzost he knew, all too intimately.
Ah, if only he could provide his knowledge and experience directly! But he was no good like this, locked in a prison half of his own making and unable to truly interact with the world. That he had been able to do so much on the island had been a miracle in itself; a small Cut, unseen and unknown, had made a crucial lock much easier to break in their flight, and he had managed--he hoped--to keep his only anchor to this reality from injury and discovery. Invisibility had been the first lesson his mother had taught, after all.
Which was why it was such a rude shock when David looked straight at him with that penetrating, analytical stare that he usually reserved for complex puzzles and opened his mouth...
"...You can see me?" he said, faintly.
Nikolai listened to David without interrupting him. The blood transfusion part didn't surprise him that much, the notes had already suggested that, but having the confirmation from someone who had more knowledge was always welcome. He nodded encouraging the Fabrikator to continue, noting the sudden nervousness possessing him. It was quickly solved why. Merzost was involved.
"Of course it's once again causing trouble", he said rubbing his forehead, "you said you talked to Zoya already? What did she say about this? I'm not sure any of you should even think about using this cursed power. It has done enough damage. We find another solution." He didn't miss that excited glint in David's eyes and shutting the idea down immediately was the best.
David's next statement almost startled Nikolai and he followed his look to Aleksander, who wore an expression on his face that suited his own feeling. This didn't go as planned.
"I don't think that's the case", he said cautiously, but waited for David's reaction - or lack of - to the question that was directly shot at him.
Despite the little disappointment he felt when Nikolai shut down the option of using merzost themselves, he nodded. Who was he to disobey direct orders?
"Zoya didn't say much. Just looked at me with that grim expression", he answered and after a moment, he added, "I think she's more worried about where you disappear to for most of the days lately than our research status." The new queen probably had enough on her plate and was interested in results rather than in how they got to them.
When he mentioned the Tidemakers, Nikolai seemed...he wasn't entirely sure. Surprised? Confused? Guilty? Certainly a bit startled, that much he was able to read from his body language. But his attention quickly went back to the darker spot, trying to figure out if there was a possibility that it was just a trick of the light. But there was nothing that could make it look like that. And no trick of the light could cause the sound of a faint disembodied voice hovering in the air.
Someone was there. It didn't cause any appropriate reaction in the Prince, so he must know. And the voice, as quiet as it was, sounded familiar. But, he didn't want to jump into conclusions.
"Not a tidemaker. But someone. A very blurry someone", he said to that voice and Nikolai the same. Curiosity got the better of him and he stepped closer, only restrain keeping him from trying if his hand would go through the spot: "And who?"
He had a guess. But he didn't want to be right about it.
Aleksander felt frozen to the table. Where Nikolai had been going had almost everything to do with the demon, and, of course, everything to do with Aleksander himself.
And David heard him. He could see that, the way David's face changed ever so slightly, and the new, narrowed focus on him.
"You know me, Daveleh." The words escaped before he could hold them back, the fond child's name as easy as breathing. He hadn't used it since David had reached adulthood.
What they had had was gone. The easy mentor/student relationship, one of the very few students he'd taught personally because his mother had seen too much of his grandfather in the boy; all wasted because they had ended up on opposite sides of the civil war.
Aleksander looked helplessly to Nikolai, his expression raw and pained.
"I suppose the decision has been taken out of our hands."
Nikolai noted David's answer about his talk with Zoya with a nod, but froze in the movement when the Fabrikator mentioned her worries. A wave of guilt washed over him. "I know", he said quietly, "that's one reason why I ordered this meeting today." But it didn't seem like either of the girls managed to fit it into their schedule, which meant he'd have to talk to them separately. Pleasant. The topic of the experiments was forgotten in the moment, the discovery that David was able to notice - not clearly see, apparently - Aleksander pushing it into the background. The pained expression on Aleksander's face made him want to say something comforting, but all he did was to nod in agreement. It was taken out of their hands, if they liked it or not.
David heard Nikolai say something, but his brain didn't translate it; too busy with the much more interesting occurence. But when his suspicion was confirmed, it eventually caused a short-circuit with too many contradictive thoughts and feelings raising. It was the anger that stuck out. The anger of what happened to Genya, no, what was done to her by this very person overshadowed everything else.
He stepped far back from the table, glaring at the blurry dark spot for a long moment, but when he spoke, his eyes fixated on Nikolai: "How dare you bring him back here? You know what he did and what everyone lost because of him. You can't possibly find an excuse for that or a reason why Genya should be in the same room with the very person who harmed her!" David ran his hand through his messy hair, clinging to the anger when he focused back on the Darkling: "How is this happening? Why? And how long has this been going on without us noticing?"
"David--" Aleksander slid off the table, hands out and palms up placatingly. He was shorter than the other man, in this form, and more frail in both looks and reality. "David. Don't blame him. This was not his doing."
How was he to even begin to explain? He barely understood it himself, this new tether between himself and the king. The only thing he understood was that it was better than being left alone in the dark.
Nikolai couldn't blame David for his reaction, not really. Now that he was older and more experienced he understood that some things had to be done, cruel and gruesome as they were, and who wasn't led by own issues now and then? He didn't agree with a bunch of these things, but he understood. As much as he understood David. Genya was the only thing that really tied him to the real world and got him away from his books and experiments and she was his weak spot; so what she endured was too. Without moving from his own spot, but his eyes wandering between the two of them, he trashed his proposition to let them sort it out without his input: "I don't think it was the doing of either of us. You weren't less suprised than I was when you were suddenly around. David, we don't know exactly how it came to this yet. I understand that this is an upsetting development for you and you have every reason to be angry about the things that happened in the past. But it can't be changed." He used the most factual tone he could muster, knowing that this was an easier way to appeal to his reason than emotions would be. "Aleksander helped with the evacuation of the Grisha on the island, if it wasn't for him, maybe none of us would've made it out", he continued; he hadn't noticed his manipulation of the lock back then, but his input had given him enough ideas and the little shadow play had distracted guards too. "That was also the first time he showed up, to answer the question about how long it is like that. And he's not a threat; to his big misfortune he's bound to me, so he can't go anywhere on his own as much as I'm sure he'd prefer to escape my endless chatter", he finished his little explanation on a lighter tone, hoping to ease some tension in the room. Then, he curiously asked: "What exactly do you see?"
Most of his anger was indeed rooted in what was done to Genya. But to be fair, it wasn't only directed towards the Darkling, it was also directed towards himself for what he did without questioning anything...and just because it was interesting - and the realisation that it wasn't much different now either. The blurry spot moved away from the table, accompanied by this hard to hear disembodied voice, trying to take away the blame from Nikolai. Before he could say anything to that, the Prince jumped in and gave him some answers. Not once did his eyes move away from the Darkling, attempting to figure out how he should feel about it and solving the puzzle of how it was possible that he was at two places at once. Sure it had to do with the demon he cursed Nikolai with; they had feared it would create a link between them, but this was more than that. And Nikolai called him Aleksander, he noted, not the Darkling. So they must have made some kind of peace? He wished Genya was here. He had no idea what to make of all of this. But she would. She would know what the appropriate reaction was. The fact that the Darkling helped with the saving of the Grisha eased his anger. It was always his priority to make the world a better place for his kind and at least that seemingly hadn't changed in the slightest and the fact that he couldn't go anywhere without Nikolai was reassuring. "I don't know what to make of this", David finally stated honestly, but the anger in his voice almost fully gone, "or what to think of it at all." Having the enemy under their roof was...something. Not only enemy, though. He was also his mentor at one point. Someone he trusted. "N-not much. I see a blurry, darker spot that breaks the natural light. That's why my first thought was a Tidemaker on parem", he answered Nikolai's question. If he squinted his eyes, he could see that the spot had human-like outlines. "You are here and still at the tear of the world?", David asked now directly pointed at the Darkling, "how do we know what you say is true?" As upsetting as it was, a very small part of him was also delighted; despite all the bad things, there were many fond memories tied to the Darkling too.
Not that Aleksander would admit it, but the so-called 'endless chatter' was more a boon than a curse. Yuri's voice had gone frighteningly silent since he had gone into the tree, and as much as Aleksander was used to being alone...he didn't want to resign himself to an eternity of solitude just yet. The boy's constant talk kept him sane and reminded him that there was still a world out there to protect.
"I am still at the tear in the world, physically," Aleksander replied after a moment. "I cannot leave of my own volition; and I understood that when I took that position. There is no one else to do it." His face was troubled. "Whether this is a reprieve or a cruel joke of the Making, I do not know, but I am little better than a ghost here.
"As for whether or not I am telling the truth... That will have to be up to your judgement."
Nikolai returned to being quiet, now that some of the questions had been answered. His eyes wandered to the door, somewhat hoping Zoya and Genya would show up. David's reaction to the whole topic most likely was the easiest one of the three and he wanted to have this through at once. With Aleksander's statment that he was still at the tear of the world, once again the memory of how it came to it, the last moments he was with them, resurfaced. By now he wasn't entirely convinced anymore that it was the only solution, although it had solved two problems at once. Or so we thought, he finished his train of thought with a look at Aleksander's apparition. "Does your appearance here somehow affect your body in the tear? Costing you energy or...lifetime?", Nikolai asked; Aleksander was one of the most powerful Grisha and somewhat immortal, but in these circumstances, could the lifetime run out?
David slowly nodded about the Darkling's words. That's what they all have been told too. If he believed him or not was another chapter. He had never actively lied - just not shared the full information. "The logical thing to confirm the accuracy of this would be to go check it out", he stated, "but I think it is credible enough. Why would you choose to be a shadow of yourself if you could do better." So he chose to believe it was true. With the shock slowly subsiding, he came to the very exciting conclusion that this could be something to figure out for them. How the connection worked, what affects it had, if there was a way to give him a more solid appearance - at that thought he backtracked. This would not be a good thing. Nikolai's question was a good one and he also looked at the blurry spot, curious for an answer.
Zoya was furious, to say the least, entering the room.
She'd recognise that voice anywhere. Telling her that she had power, that he was helping grisha. Telling her that it was an accident, that he didn't mean for her aunt to die.
And now, Nikolai, and David, both talking, just talking with the Darkling, of all monsters. The very person they'd fought to destroy, who was supposed to be DEAD.
But here he was, all diplomatic, convincing her best scientist, and her lover to join his cause.
"Why?" she asked, voice hollow, "Why would you do this? He ruined my life! How come he gets to live and Harshaw, and my Aunt, and even David if we going by canon don't? Why can't he just leave us be?" Her voice rose to a scream terrifyingly fast.
And then, she did something she hadn't done since she a a young child.
She allowed herself to cry.

What has been the nicest thing about your new powers?
I'm not quite sure. I'm assuming this is in reference to Juris' powers, of course. The worst thing would certainly be the myths and worship as a saint surrounding it, but the nicest might be the extra help with fighting (not that I needed it)
So I heard Zoya has taken on a pirate lover???
You mean privateer. I mean...Saints! The audacity! @stormqueenofthegarden having an affair with a roguishly handsome privateer? Well, what chance would I ever stand against the legendary Sturmhond??
A great chance, to be completely honest.
Saints, I hate sea life, you know this, Nikolai. You've heard enough of my complaining. And you should know that you are....I mean..Sturmhond...is a pirate, not a "privateer". After all, you need the monarch's endorsement to be one, and you, lover, are no longer a king or prince.
ps. got enough entertainment now?
This is one of the most romantic things you've ever said, Zoya!
And yes, I know the sea and you aren't going to become friends, although you have so much in common. The power, the beauty, the absolute fascination you both bring along.
But also, how dare you saying I'm not a monarch anymore? I'm still the king of people's hearts, my love.
Well, I need someone to appeal to the people. As for romantic, please kindly ignore that.
I refuse to believe the sea and I have anything in common.
So you're just using me for my popularity ๐๐๐ How am I to ever recover from this discovery? So you're not powerful, untameble, life but also deadly, beautiful and full of secrets? Who have I been talking to all these years then? ๐ฑ๐ฑ
Glad you are figuring it out. Maybe I should leave you for Sturmhond. And, the sea is in no way beautiful. The other points I have to agree with.
(please, have you had enough drama yet)
I mean, you could. But you'd live at sea for that and considering how openly you hate that one. I've also heard he's an even bigger chatterbox than I am, are you equipped for that? ๐ค
You just don't see it. And that's okay :D
(drama? what drama? ;D)
I quit.
mod: forgot to say thankyou to @fireflyxrebelwrites for the inspo!!! should have said this sooner.

What do you think about Nikolai teaming up with the Darkling? If...you even know
Mod: Oof i wasnt going to get zoya to realise until a while after everyone, kinda wanted to do her reaction to knowing after everyone....
What kind of new laws did you put in place so far? And which ones do you plan go push through in the future? Do you feel like it was the right choice to take the throne?
It's actually been unreasonably difficult to put laws into place. I need approval from multiple people before putting it into place, some of which find me to not be a true queen, simply because I'm a Suli Grisha soldier.
As for taking the throne, it was a necessary decision.
Like..BOTH tried to kill you at one point (following up the last question because i hit send before I was finished).
True. I like a man who can challenge me (and take slightly longer to lose than most)
Who was your first crush?
A nosy question.
I've only had two so called "crushes in my life. After being sold as a bride, I tried to avoid love and crushes. So my first crush must have been when I was around 15 or 16, on a manipulative man who later tried to kill me.
I'll leave it up to interpretation who that was.
I may never find words beautiful enough to describe all that you mean to me, but I will spend the rest of my life searching for them.
...
that would be a huge waste of time

Oh, cruel death is coming for me. I imagined dying with a weapon in my hand on the battlefield for Ravka, not being consumed by fire burning on my skin.
He actually got me to bring him a sword so he could have a weapon in his hand if he were to die.
