13 pieces for Halloween, no.3: Henry Cowell was a fantastic and somewhat obscure American composer who wrote many works experimenting with instrument capabilities. Here is one example, where the performer has to drag their nails across piano wire. And we the audience can hear the grating cry of the banshee, off in the distance, as if we were in an Irish moor at midnight. I’m not exaggerating: this is the most chilling piano work I’ve ever heard in my life. I’m surprised it hasn’t been used in horror films.
