Yesssss. This is one of the things that’s so important about their relationship, right? See, on the one hand, one of the things I love about this story and this relationship, in particular, is that they’re older than your typical protagonists, and they’re dealing with a lot of grown-up issues - chronic and terminal illness, impending widower-hood, empty-nest syndrome (because that’s absolutely part of what’s going on with WKX, re: A-Xiang), contemplation of your legacy and what you’re going to leave in the world. BUT ALSO, these moments of playfulness and flirting are so important in both building their relationship and to each of them, individually. Because neither of them ever actually got to have this before.
Wen Kexing had nothing even approaching a normal childhood past 9 years old, or thereabouts. Zhou Zishu didn’t have the chance for a real adolescence, given Qin Huaizhang died when ZZS was only a little older than Chengling, leaving him in charge of a sect that was under constant threat until ZZS picked them up and moved them to Jin, whereupon he immediately became spymaster for a wannabe emperor. Being stupid and silly and flirty … whatever relationships either of them has managed to have in the past, this is probably the first time at this kind of stuff for either of them, especially as they wouldn’t have had anyone they could trust enough, before this.
And I think it’s also something that speaks very very loudly to a queer audience, particularly an older queer audience, who also (many times) didn’t have the chance to be out and open with queer relationships during adolescence and may go through that type of relationship stuff later on, after coming out. Watching Wenzhou is not unlike going to one of those gay proms for grown-ups.
