Children from poor families (in Japan), especially in the early ‘90s, slept in the same room or in the same futon as their parents. The futon can be put away so it’s quite a space conversion. Just, woosh, away with the futon and back to a whole room to be used. In my early drafts, the Fujioka family wanted a temporary place to move into while daddy Fujioka settled into his new job. After he managed to get into the swing of things and Haruhi had established her friendship with Ritsu, they would move to a better place. The place where canon had them, and the whole moving-shenanigans I described in an earlier post would happen.

Since that didn’t happen...

In my head, the apartment is at least a little similar to the one in canon. A door that leads directly into the kitchen/living room. And one bedroom and toilet. Honestly, the canon apartment was pretty small. So this apartment is just a few square metres smaller. Like the kitchen is fully inside the living room, the toilet is small enough to knock elbows, etc, etc. The rent is dirt cheap however (on account of its proximity to a certain yakuza boss), so they don’t mind overly much.

And I suppose after Haruhi grew up some more, they cardoned off the bedroom with wall panels or something similar when in need of privacy. She definitely has her own futon now, but I don’t think she would mind sharing the bedroom. Especially since daddy Fujioka has such odd and sporadic job hours. It’s not uncommon for him to come home in the morning and sleep to lunch.

Good evening! I’m not sure how relevant this is, but I just want to say that I just finished reading The Evolution of Organized Crime and this is an amazing read! I am always wary of opening manga/anime fanfiction because I’m not very good at accepting the cliches of those genres. It just makes me so upset when characters are just caricatures or 2D. “It’s one thing if they only make a brief appearance, but when they’re meant to be part of the main cast it really bugs me when somebody isn’t developed.” But when I saw the line of characters, I just could not pass by and GOD I did not regret it.

I really couldn’t be happier than when I see Ritsu and Haruhi having a system of friends and a loved one! I love the way that when working in a decidedly anime world, you don’t avoid character development and realistic reactions.

I just love all of your original and canon characters. Honestly, after revisiting anime at a conscious age, you give me back my love and affection for the characters and the plot.
