'"This collection from Chicago represents a very strong, influential tradition of art that came out of a center that is not on the coasts and that is still oftentimes overlooked simply because it is not New York," said Robert Cozzolino, the Art Institute's curator of paintings. "It's as blunt as that." Bluntness is not part of Minnesota's culture, but Chicago and Minneapolis do have this in common: They often get left out of art world dialogues. The umbrella term of Chicago Imagists really embraces two distinct generations of artists: "The Monster Roster," which included artists Dominick Di Meo, Leon Golub, Nancy Spero and June Leaf, many of whom served in World War II and went to art school on the G.I. Bill, and a younger group known as "The Hairy Who." Now on view, FREE, through October 28, 2018, "Prediction Error" by Beth Dow is the latest show from the Minnesota Artist Exhibition Program at Mia. Throughout her career, Beth Dow has explored the dual nature of the photograph as both an image you see and an object you handle. For her exhibition, Prediction Error, Beth plays with our perception and expectations. Without signals (like flower stems, blue skies, or natural colors) which ground our understanding of the images, we might become uncomfortable. The absence of what we expect to see in a photograph creates a disconnection within our perception that can result in abrupt adjustments within ourselves—physically and mentally. We begin to question our vantage point within the image and, ultimately, the nature of the photograph all together. Dow’s photographs have been exhibited throughout the Midwest, as well in New York, the United Kingdom, Japan and China. She has been the recipient of a Minnesota State Arts Board Fellowship (2008), a McKnight Foundation Fellowship (2004), and a Greater London Arts grant (1989). This exhibition is part of the Minnesota Artists Exhibition Program, now located in U.S. Bank Gallery. Yasufumi Nakamori, Mia's curator of photography and new media, and our very talented art crew are putting the finishing touches on a new FREE exhibition. "A History of Photography Remix: Selections from the Mia Collection," features big name photographers along side never before seen new accessions, and it opens this weekend in Mia's third floor photography galleries. From its inception in the 1820s, photography has become the most popular medium for artistic expression. Today, photographs are everywhere, whether made with a smartphone or encountered online, at home, in magazines—or here, in an art museum. Photography’s power is undeniable: photographs communicate what words cannot. This thematically organized exhibition draws from Mia’s vast and varied collection of approximately 12,500 photographs. Together, they form a constellation of photographic visions and practices that extend across numerous places and points in time, revealing a multiplicity of histories, techniques, and perspectives. One of the first art museums in the United States to collect photography—since 1965—Mia continues to expand its collection. In celebration of #InternationalCatDay, be sure to swing by Gallery 315 and say hello to the many felines featured in "The Rabblerouser and the Homebody: Minnesota’s Elizabeth Olds and Wanda Gág," including those pictured in this 1937 lithograph. Wanda Gág said she was charmed by the way cats “fit themselves into and over all sorts of places and spaces.” Here their blissful pliability contrasts with the hard geometries of stove, logs, and kindling box. Our eye travels from curve to curve around a warm pool of light. Surprisingly, Gág had only two cats while making "Siesta," Snoopy and Snooky. She sat and sketched their antics on the kitchen floor, then used their various poses for this print. The same cats were her models for her book "Millions of Cats" ten years earlier. The French impressionist artist most known for his paintings and drawings of dancers was born on this day in Paris in 1834. We're joining our friends at @mfaboston, @artinstitutechi, @philamuseum, @gettymuseum, @clevelandmuseumofart, @lacma, and others in choreographing a Degas birthday dance by sharing #DegasBallerinas today. Marie van Goethem, the model for this sculpture, was a novice at the Paris Ballet, where inexperienced dancers like her were given the unglamorous nickname "rats." Edgar Degas was a sympathetic chronicler of the daily life of ballet dancers and was always searching for new ways to depict movement and form. With a pencil or pastel crayon, he quickly captured fleeting moments on stage or in rehearsal. This bronze was cast from a plaster version of Degas' original colored-wax sculpture, which caused a sensation when it debuted--dressed in real ballet slippers, tutu, and bodice--at the 1881 Impressionist exhibition. “Art and Healing: In the Moment" is an exhibition of artwork made by local community artists in response to the fatal shooting of Philando Castile. The above image is a detail from one of the artworks in the exhibition, "January 19th, 2015," an oil, pastel, acrylic and photo transfer on panel by Leslie Barlow. Castile was an African-American man who grew up in Saint Paul. On July 6, 2016, he was fatally shot by a police officer in the nearby town of Falcon Heights after being pulled over for a traffic stop. He was 32 years old. In the months after Castile’s funeral, artists across the community were motivated to make art, some of which they gave to his family–-gifts intended to help the people closest to Castile process their grief and start to heal, while also bearing collective witness to the tragedy of his untimely death. The family, moved by this generosity, approached Mia with a desire to publicly share these artworks, which includes video, sculpture, posters, paintings, and quilts. As a part of this exhibition, Mia is providing a Quiet Space for visitors who need a space to reflect after viewing the exhibition. This space is available daily during regular museum hours. In support of this exhibition, Mia is also co-hosting events intended to promote learning and healing on Friday evenings and Saturday mornings through the end of July. Happy Birthday #FridaKahlo, born #onthisday 1907. Kahlo is known mainly for her self portraits– often dark and surreal– they deal with identity, corporality, and death. In “An Inner Dialogue with Frida Kahlo (Hand Shaped Earring)”, contemporary Japanese artist Morimura Yasumasa riffs off these themes, using costume, makeup and visual manipulation to fashion himself into Kahlo’s likeness. This is your last weekend to experience two FREE exhibitions featuring artwork by Minnesota artist George Morrison! Don't miss "George Morrison in Focus" in gallery 375 and "George Morrison: Drawings and Small Paintings" in gallery 353! Both shows close on Sunday, July 1. George Morrison (1919–2000) constantly explored new ways to translate nature and personal experience. Born near Grand Marais, Minnesota, Morrison trained in Minneapolis before moving to New York in 1943. Immersed in the culture of improvisation and experimentation in New York, Morrison gradually worked on a large scale and made thickly encrusted paintings shimmering with light and energy. This installation places Morrison’s Untitled (1960) painting in dialogue with artists he knew and exhibited with in the 1950s and 1960s, including Philip Guston, Grace Hartigan, and Louise Nevelson. Recently conserved, Morrison’s painting has not been on view at Mia for many decades. This installation reconnects Morrison’s work to midcentury modernism and reaches forward to suggest his legacy.
