yk what I love? that the first text we have written by a woman in England was a Roman woman inviting her best friend to her birthday
it’s from Claudia Severa to Sulpicia Lepidina and dated to around 97-105 AD. I find it so comforting to know that even almost 2000 years ago people had friendships like these and wanted to spend their birthday together.
We aren’t so different from each other after all
Happy Birthday Claudia Severa!!!!!!

The so-called Leningrad Painter gave us the only example of a woman working in a vase studio in Attic art on this mid-fifth-century BC hydria, the Caputi Hydria

Artists who know how to draw armors or very detailed clothing are powerful
oh to draw embroidery like Alexander Roslin does
See it’s stuff like this that makes me believe that selling your soul to the devil in exchange for talent was a real career track in the 1700s.

"darkness confers sanctity."
The Bacchae, Euripides, translated by John Davie
this reminds me of my classical mythology lecturer in uni. He told us that he had a 'great idea for a school trip', that would entail us looking for a very dark cave, so dark that no natural light could reach.
Then we shouldn't eat or drink for a day or two and venture into the dark with only a little oil lamp to guide us. And then he said "In that infinite darkness I guarantee that you will find the gods."
Safe to say, we did not do that, but i think of this often
"darkness confers sanctity."

“The myths of Dionysos are dominated by an initial fierce resistance to the god, in the same way that we refuse to recognize the wild forces in us until we are overwhelmed by their power.”
