His surname is written 姚 and pronounced yao [second tone]. It's an old word and basically never used in modern spoken language besides as a surname, but it does mean something like "handsome". OP mixed this up with 要, pronounced yao [fourth tone], meaning "want/desire". Easy mistake but I may as well put this out there.

On that note, Andy Weir gave Yao a given name (Li jie) but never specified which tones it had or what characters they were (big sigh). The first word that comes to mind is 理解 (li [third tone] jie [third tone]), meaning "understanding". This is probably what Andy meant, but as a Chinese person, no one would ever name their kid that (naming conventions are a lot more nuanced and complicated). His official(?) Chinese name (it's on wikipedia) is 立杰 (li [fourth tone] jie [second tone]), the first word meaning "upright" and the second meaning "outstanding".

nancy makes friends in every place she moves and leaves them behind every time, the only consistent people in her life are her family (aka the people from hawkins)

i like to imagine robin figuring this out because she gets to her uncle's place in philly a couple days early and is out getting groceries or something and sees nancy talking to someone like she's lived there forever

robin confronts her and nancy ends up telling her that she just cant settle down somewhere because the friendships dont feel meaningful and the place always feels wrong, its too busy its too empty, its always not right

this results in robin impulse buying an rv and the two of them driving across the country together (falling in love) until eventually they find a place (i'm thinking northwest, oregon, washington, maybe northern california) and somehow against all odds it works out
