Y’all talk about how Greed was nicer than the other homunculi even before formally joining the gud guyz but you never seem to tie it to the fact that all he ever wanted was friends and if he treated everyone like dirt the way they did he wouldn’t get any.
Seriously, I don’t think it’s his personality alone. He just wants to connect with people, and he can’t do that if he’s always talking down to them or trying to get some sick enjoyment out of their pain or holding any lack of power over their heads.
It’s why he treats fights with people who haven’t pissed him off more like sparring sessions. If they’re not on Greed’s hit list, their potential friends possessions, so why not make the fight fun for both sides? It’s why he does favors for Ling even though he doesn’t feel obligated to. The brat basically belongs to him at this point, don’t want his belongings to be moody. It’s why after turning down a position on Team Ed he immediately counter-offers a position on the then-nonexistent Team Greed. The outcome of that exchange was exactly the same as it would’ve been if he’d just accepted, all that changed was who got bragging rites, wth was even the point of that you dingus. It’s why the only time (that I can think of) that he ever started a fight was when he broke into the Bradley house and attacked Wrath, after remembering that the dude killed all his buddies. He can enjoy fighting, and he can be totally unsympathetic and ruthless, but he doesn’t seem to crave actual conflict unless it’s against someone he already has a vendetta against, and he was the wronged party in that scenario anyway.
I think he subconsciously knows you have to be a friend to get friends, but of course he doesn’t realize he wants friends, and because of that he also fails to see when he actually has friends. Which is equal parts funny and sad.
