ARMS was created by the Mario Kart 8 crew, so it’s no surprise the game features a fun, substantial replay mode for grabbing screenshots. The camera controls, however, aren’t fully-documented in-game, so I’ve written this little guide to its hidden features:

As you begin a replay, you’ll see the main controls (camera, pause, slo-mo, exit to menu) on-screen, mapped to the A,B,X,Y buttons. The control sticks handle forward/reverse and fast/slow.

Here’s what the game doesn’t tell you:

Plus and Minus toggle the health meters.

RZ and LZ choose which fighter to focus on.

When paused, the Left/Right arrow buttons move action frame by fame.

To hide the replay HUD, don’t touch the controls for a few seconds.

There are five cameras to cycle through via the X button:

1) Normal, in-game view from behind your fighter.

2) Elevated:Camera slowly circles arena.

3) Elevated: Camera zooms in and out to keep both fighters in view.

4) Camera circles chosen fighter (My favorite camera.)

5) View fighter from behind and to the right.

Note that cameras 2 & 3 switch places in a couple of modes.

Once you’ve found a good general spot in your replay to take your screenshot, pause the action. Hit plus or minus if you want to hide the health meters. Use the Left Stick and arrow buttons to find the exact frame you want. WARNING: If You’re using Camera 4, DO NOT try cycling through the other camera views, as Camera 4 will immediately reset to its behind-the-back starting point, and you’ll lose your shot.

Then wait a few seconds for the replay HUD to vanish, and press the Switch’s built-in Screen Capture button. Your shot is ready to post online!

Note that, in ARMS, the replay does not create additional frames on-the-fly during slo-mo as MK8′s replays do. Just like in MK8, however, special effects such as explosions and dirt clouds continue forward in time even if you reverse the replay, allowing you to play a bit with the look of some shots.
