watching and mourning first two seasons of interview with the vampire like it’s my dead wife
it is that deep. the mischaracterisation of armand is that deep. i wish for everyone to realise what great disservice the writers have done to his character with their racist storytelling. armand has been described in the show as something repulsive, something without a presence, a fuck cloud and a rotten thing, something boring to death and insipid, something that cannot be loved and something that provokes a reaction of strong disgust in many other characters; lestat was genuinely stunned that louis deemed armand a companion-material. let that sink in.
some will try to argue that all those remarks are only targeted at his evil deeds. unfortauntely that is not true. in the books, however scared or repulsed lestat was by some of armand's actions, he still found him beautiful. he still described him with very reverent language. that was the core of it: everyone desired armand. that was why he suffered so much. everyone treated him like a pretty conquest. at the beginning of tva david talbot literally out of the blue started playing with his hair and sniffing them. it was the most dehumanising desire, that always showed the truth: he was too beautiful for this world.
this is how marius described armand in blood and gold: "And there I saw beauty, beauty which has always been my downfall, beauty in a new and celestial form. Heaven had cast down upon this stone floor an abandoned angel, of auburn curls and perfectly formed limbs, of fair and mysterious face. His soft reddish hair was loose and tangled. His flesh was pale and the bones of his face only faintly sharpened by his Slavic blood."
"This was a boy, as I had said, and he had a head of long curly hair. But his face was shining white, and perfect, the countenance of a god it seemed, a Cupid out of Caravaggio, seductive yet ethereal, with auburn hair and dark brown eyes."
more quotes from books here:
so on what grounds is armand getting so much verbal humiliation in the show? all i see is that the writers for the third time in a row focused on his 'weird' side, his 'gremlin' side, his 'evil and crazy' side, while... completely ditching the rest of the picture. why is it that no one has called him beautiful yet? why is he being so perpetually degraded, so belittled and debased verbally? because to me it screams fucking racism, it screams to me all those writers sitting and scribbling their notes about armand and never once admitting to themselves that assad is beautiful, that this bangladeshi man could be described in such a way, that he could actually be considered that. his screentime got radically reduced this season, they literally cut parts of tvl where his character was of paramount importance and any time armand was on screen, we were just given the following messages: he's weird!! he's crazy!! he's evil!! he's desperate!! while completely disregarding the rest. it is a deeply rooted, unconscious racism that genuinely terrifies and saddens me and i truly have no idea how these scripts made it air.
i guess every vampire universe has their “eclipse” flop era… but maybe breaking dawn (s4) will serve… (i’m still in denial)
saw some people saying that this is a big set up for dm in s4 and… are we sure about that? are we sure that show!daniel will give him this kind of love? show!daniel who lowkey sa’d two people that we know of, told armand he will never love him and said he had a “gag reflex” at armand’s love confession? show!daniel who just acted completely disinterested in him?? in the books armand’s love for daniel had a beautifully redeeming effect but i struggle to see how this is going to be canon in the show after how they have handled these affairs. i don’t trust the writers and their goodwill in the slightest. armand’s “arc” that was promised was nothing but a humiliation tour.

yes armand just needs to be loved. only took them three seasons to acknowledge this universal truth amidst the complete and callous humiliation of the character while calling him every single slur available in the dictionary. when you think about it, we got truly all types of slurs: racial ones (calling him a “gypsy”), homophobic ones, ones shaming his sexual preference, ones making fun of his past (“tart”, “rent boy”, “rag doll”) as though it were his choice and not a horror tragedy of being trafficked as a child. so many creative ways to debase him over the past few years, while giving us barely two short scenes of providing some shreds of understanding to him. i am serious i do NOT want them to ever adapt tva. i hope they stay away from it forever.
it IS baiting, because its unsatisfactory and has been completely stripped of all of its depth. its like they threw their hands up and said "fuck, fine, theyre together now and nobody knows why or how" and forgot that it causes so many more problems than it solves. does daniel even KNOW that armand is going around telling people that they're companions? we have no idea! because they didnt tell us! we dont get to have the depth! we dont get to see the reasons why theyre so perfect for each other! we have to fill in the gaps ourselves but i dont really want to fucking do that, i want the show to tell the story, i want a faithful adaptation of dm. and we won't get it because they forgot they were supposed to be doing that.
genuinely. the season has now ended and it feels to me like we made no progress in regards to dm at all. we can go back on ao3 and fill in the gaps just the way we did two years ago and nothing substantial is promised.
i haven't seen the finale yet and have been able to mostly avoid any serious spoilers, except for the ones ive actively hunted for (particularly in regards to dm). and im just.. baffled? my mind is fucking boggled? disappointed deeply but so unsurprised at the same time? armand calls him his companion but we don't see how daniel feels about, like .. anything? what did they talk about? how did THAT come around? why did daniel who presumably both does not trust him and still holds a lot of things against him agree to that, unless they hashed a bunch of things out, but for some reason they decided to not show any of that happening so we just have to kind of ASSUME that a conversation was at some point had. what are the details? did armand tell him everything? is daniel regaining his memories? is it a "lets try again" or a "roll with it and see where it goes"? is this something daniel is actually seriously invested in or is armand being delusional, something he is KNOWN to do quite often? im annoyed by this???? because no actually, i didn't really sign up for empty fucking fandom pandering, i wanted an actual adaptation of the very emotional story that they go through in the books. the only way to make this work even a little bit is if a generous portion of season 4 essentially works backward to explain it, on top of already taking on showing more of armands backstory. im so irritated?
all i am gonna say here is, book!dm is one of the best examples of beautiful gothic love that i have read in my life. it was so beautifully wrought: pining, armand’s fear for the other, blood vial, night island, armand’s reluctance to turn him, crying in front of daniel, killing the young ones to protect daniel from afar, and so much more that could have been adapted, for it to be kept at least in 1% canon. the show dm feels like baiting to me and i cannot get over how they just dropped the word “companion” from armand’s mouth without either showing us daniel’s reaction or whether he consented to it, and expect us to be happy for another two or three years. this is insanity. it is especially important as armand has assumed companionship twice in the series without the other reciprocating the need (of course he was in a relationship with louis later, but i am referring here to the initial companionship conversation that happened in paris). they gave us this season no depth to armand or his motivations AT ALL and are expecting us to be happy with acknowledging he was traumatised without sheding any light or context to anything related to daniel at all.
they never planned to adapt dm on our screens. that much is clear now. i never understood why they aged up show daniel so much (in the books he met armand when he was twenty, and proceeded to have a relationship with him until he was turned at thirty-two). everyone in the show has been aged a bit (armand by ten years, claudia, lestat, louis, etc) but never such a considerable amount like THIRTY-EIGHT years. all this time i was willing to believe that it was all done on purpose of past-dm-relationship. and when i mean past-dm i mean an actual relationship the way it had been in the books. they gave us many hints in recent two seasons to think so - daniel’s weird memory gaps/alterations when he thought he owned a buick though he never did, thinking he slept with louis even though they never did, all 70’s being a “blur”. just to drop in our throats that yeah armand stalked daniel from afar and watched him fuck a student in the 90’s, yeah that is all, be happy with what you got dear viewer.
armand’s relationship with human!daniel lasted twelve years in the books. it is particularly important, as in the show he proposed to alice in 1985 and she rejected him (twelve years after san francisco). i never personally believed that armand was alice but i believed in partial-alice theory, meaning that some of their memories together were confused and mixed up with the memories of daniel’s first wife. and while i was a firm believer of it two years ago, now i have lost all my hope. if they wanted to age daniel accordingly with how they have aged everyone else in the show, they could have just done that with luke brandon field who is now thirty-eight. especially if past dm has not happened in the way we all believed then more reasons for just doing it in the present with luke. i stand firmly by saying that i genuinely do not understand what the writers are doing and whether they even know themselves what they are doing. i love ebogo, he’s cute and funny and i don’t think he’s a bad actor the way i saw people claiming, on the contrary he delivered really good acting with how limited his scenes and dialogues were, and he has great chemistry with assad. but the casting of him makes no sense age-wise and doing a slowburn of four reasons when he is seventy-three is insane. that is why i am concluding that they never planned on adapting dm, that is why they got ebogo in the role instead, and they only changed their mind on impulse when they realised how big of a fanbase dm had. that is why it all feels so rushed and deprived of context. are we meant to be happy that armand called him a companion in the finale? when we did not see how it came about? when armand has had a history of assuming a companionship when the other person did not give a shit about them? are we meant to cheer?
we still have no idea what’s the story with THAT… uh… writers please don’t fuck it up… the potential here is INSANE
so this was just a bait huh

“armand has a huge chunk of episode 7”… and it was, what, five minutes? wow we FINALLY acknowledged that he was traumatised from that brothel, amidst the haze of how much of a villain he is, sooo progressive of them🫶🏻 great job y’all. thank you dear writers for giving this south-asian traumatised gay man a little bit of humanity!
(while daniel just bowled the entire episode).
i am still hoping for armand-is-partially-alice reveal…
to those who keep claiming that armand’s diabolically low screen time is justifiable, since he is not in any way the main protagonist: have you read the vampire lestat? armand plays an immensely important role in flashbacks to paris, where he is at his most desperate and unhinged self. it is a crime that they did not adapt the complexity of armand and lestat’s relationship, how armand begged for the other to love him (“what can i do to make you love me? what can i give? the knowledge of all i have witnessed, the secrets of our powers, the mystery of what i am?”), how lestat hovered between desire (finding him unspeakably beautiful) and fear (seeing how mad he was), how he saw that scared little boy in him (“in this broken child were centuries of evil and centuries of knowledge, and out of him there came no ignominious entreaty but merely the soft and bruised sense of what he was”) and how in depth he understood armand despite being utterly afraid of him. they did not show us the tower scene. no depth to armand. “love me. you have destroyed everything! but if you love me, it all can be restored in a few form”. armand shared with him his own story and the story of marius. later, as lestat met marius in person, they had a long conversation about armand and how marius perceived him as a bitter regret. where is the depth? where is that context? this is not about us getting all angry about not seeing assad’s pretty face, but he is one of the most important characters in the chronicles, a crucial part to tvl itself, and he has been completely erased from it. not even just erased, but also reduced: reduced to something laughed at and humiliated at every possibility, while being called, respectively: “a rag doll for sale”, “cruising the streets”, “tart”, “rotten”, “piece of mold”, “pussy”, “bottom twink sociopath”, and “boring to death”. hey so. uh. what the fuck?
just checked, because i am petty like that, that armand has had 11 minutes of screentime this season. assad i am so sorry
mood for today

well this was disappointing. what do you mean we had barely three armand-daniel interactions this season with the main motive being daniel-not-trusting-a-word-that-armand-says, and then, suddenly in ep6 daniel is on armand’s side and they are beheading lestat and louis together? hello? what in riverdale writing this is? i want to be happy with what we got but armand had literally more screen time as rashid than he has currently and they didn’t even bother to show us armand actually teaching him the sunwalking or the exact moment where daniel chooses his side. what the fuck. i feel so bad for all ao3 writers who have for the past two years written absolutely beautiful dm fics that gave them depth and proper context. this season is a butchery
we still have no idea what’s the story with THAT… uh… writers please don’t fuck it up… the potential here is INSANE
