Even with context, it can be BONKERS.

Dwarves hatch from eggs and are named by their axes. The main character is his own step-greatgrandfather and also own his uncle I think? The show invented an eighth dwarf called Stealthy just to kill him off in a jailbreak scene with Snow White and Grumpy. Grumpy was born as Dreamy, but he fell in love with a fairy godmother and losing her was what made him Grumpy.

It’s BONKERS.

But the premise is that every fairy tale character has been cursed to be trapped in a small town in Maine that’s called Storybrooke. The Evil Queen controls the town as the mayor, and she is the one who brought about the curse.

And when they say every character, there are SO MANY.

And it switches between scenes of the fairytale world, and the human world, and it’s so fun to try to identify which Storybrooke character is which fairy tale before you see their respective episode.

And it’s so fun and clever! The Queen’s enemies have been forced into lives that make them extremely unhappy, while others are just forced in tasks that fit them.

Red Riding Hood is a waitress at her Granny’s Diner. Jiminy Cricket is a therapist. Dr Jekyll works in a hospital. Snow White is a school teacher who is kept apart and alone from Prince Charming. Rumplestiltskin is also the Beast from Beauty and the Beast.

Some of my faves:

Rumplestiltskin / The Dark One (pathetic town coward who was coaxed into killing the previous Dark One and taking its power to keep his young son from going to war. The power twisted him into a hideous and morally crazed beast) versus Mr. Gold (Storybrooke’s pawn shop owner and owner of almost all local property.) He made a deal with Regina (the Evil Queen) to still have power in this new world.

Red Riding Hood (found out she was a werewolf when she killed her boyfriend; her cloak keeps her from turning but she left it at home that day.) versus Ruby “Red”, a waitress who works at her Granny’s Diner.

Jiminy Cricket (a man raised into thievery and cons despite his conscience, who eventually snapped and tried to kill his manipulative parents, but backfired when a boy’s innocent parents take the poison instead and are turned into shrunken dolls. To make amends, Jiminy asks a fairy to turn him into a cricket to keep an eye on the boy, since he will need a strong conscience to grow up without his parents.

And Captain Hook, who doesn’t have a ‘real world’ form for future plot reasons. He hasn’t shown up yet in my watch through but I remember ADORING HIM

As for my self insert, I haven’t nailed down details, but my currents thoughts are: (and I’ll try to not ramble too far on here because I know this post is running long—)

Fairytale world:

Sorry Belle, but I might rewrite her story and insert my S/I into her plotline…😅

Starts off in an arranged marriage, taken by Rumplestiltskin in a deal for a kingdom’s safety, they both grow to like each other, Rumple gives S/I a chance to leave and never come back, S/I takes it and flees, then stumbles upon the Queen (in disguise) on the path. The Queen subtly mentions breaking a curse with true love’s kiss, and this makes S/I return. They show interest in a very surprised Rumple, and they kiss. His appearance begins to change as the curse begins to fade. He realizes, FLIPS OUT, screams and roars and shoves them away and demands to know who sent them, whether it was the Queen, whether they were trying to disarm him. The curse locks back in, and S/I is told to leave and never return. So they leave.

(Suicide warning!!! Not actually but it is claimed)

But then the Queen comes in weeks later. She mocks Rumple, pretending that she was not the one who encouraged them to kiss him. She tells him that S/I came back home and was rejected, scorned for their association with him, tortured until they eventually gave up and flung themself off a tower. (She actually kidnapped S/I and keep them locked away permanently)

Rumple is distraught.

Real world:

“…they were Mary Margaret’s.”
