One thing that really bothers me about Hazbin's writing is the way they handle Angels sub plot.
In the first season we learn about the abuse he has to deal with. It's obviously very tragic and sad that he is forced to work in porn industry against his will while being abused by his boss Valentino. While this is all happening there is a threat of an extermination so it makes sense that most of the story is about that, they can’t help anyone if they die there.
But when the second season comes along there are no more extermination and no more deaths so now Charlie is busy with a new thing which is convincing sinners that her hotel works. But while all that is happening Angel is still in some kind of sex slavery and it's just not that important to the show? Because Charlie has other priorities, and that in my opinion makes no sense. You are telling me his friends know he is physically and sexually abused by his boss and no one does a single thing? It is barely even mentioned beside when we need a sad scene of Angel getting beat up.
I think this is mostly the problem because the show wants to do SO MUCH, it wants to do the plot with charlie trying to convince sinners, it's trying to show Vox go to war with heaven, Alastor’s deals and Angels abuse story, but with all of this it's kind of forgetting how people would actually act. Charlie has been characterized since day one as this kind and loving person yet neither she or anyone else tries to do ANYTHING, it's like the show lowkey forgot about that because this is a problem for season 3 but why? You are telling me that Charlie, this kind and loving person, prefers to try to convince sinners that her hotel works (something she can do like any time there is no deadline this time) then to try and save her friend? That's so weird to me.
I have seen people mention that she doesn't want to help because last time she helped she made things worse but i think that's ignoring a lot of context. When she went to help she was completely unaware of ANYTHING, she bargained in the studio hoping she could just nicely talk to Val and convince him, she wasn't aware of how he treats Angel she was unprepared and made it all worse, she wasn’t even aware of the abuse.
But beside that one pitiful attempt the show barely even humours the idea of saving Angel as if we all knew it was just impossible, but why? Alastor broke 2 of his deals. We know it’s possible so why does no one try? Why does no one try to save him? If we think about this logically we have the princess of hell, we have 3 overlords (Alastor, Husk and Nifty), we have an ex angel soldier (Vaggie), considering how eager Rosie was to help we may even have a 4th overlord and THE KING OF HELL HIMSELF. and you are telling me none of them can do anything about one dumb overlord???? it just makes no sense to me
Personally I think they probably want to leave this for season 3 but them doing so brings up more questions, why won't his friends do anything? I have seen people mention that Charlie was busy but before Vox declared war on heaven there was a lot of time, why would the news of sir pentious being in heaven be more important then helping Angel?
Hazbin hotel decided to tell a very tragic story yet they keep putting it aside, and it's a baffling choice. For example why does Val has so much time, we have jokes about his abuse towards Angel, we have this random doomed yaoi of him and Vox, i have seen people make fun of fans who only focus on the fact that Val is a rapist, people say that it's good that he has more character and i am not arguing against that, but i feel like a lot of screentime that could have been used to develop main characters is given to him and the show wants him to be this scary asshole but also a silly horny moth guy at the same time and it doesn't make sense. We will have scenes of him beating up Angel but also jokes about him beating up Angel. We will have scenes of Angel scared shitless of him and then scenes when he joins the friendship ending song and Charlie smiles at him oh how lovely!
I am not surprised so many fans and critics nonstop mention that he is a rapist because it feels like the show itself forgets about that because we gotta make funny horny himbo and doomed yaoi happend. I think Hazbin wanted to tackle a very very serious topic and when they actually try it can be good. Val was so scary in season one, the scenes of Angel being terrified were great. You could hear the fear in his voice and you were afraid too but it feels like they don't want to put the proper respect and focus to this story, focus and care a story like that deserves in my opinion.
