my favorite things that have happened to me on public transit
I genuinely love riding the bus because you can be part of little momentary human connections and it's always an interesting and blessed experience, so here's my list of some of my favorite moments on public transportation in no particular order
a man was sitting with a few bags of groceries in the priority seats, and then a mom and kid in a stroller got on, so he moved. the mom was apologetic that he had to move all his bags, but he was really cool about it and very friendly. he pulled a bag of kit-kats out of his bags and gave it to the kid, who was really happy. all of the other people on the bus were happy after getting to see that fun little display of kindness.
someone got on the bus and asked the driver how to get somewhere. he couldn't get to his destination on our bus, but he sat down anyway. another passenger told him that he could call the transit info hotline to get directions. the lost guy didn't have any minutes on his phone, so the other passenger offered his phone. Phone guy had the info hotline phone number memorized and I like to imagine he is a person who can memorize any phone number after just seeing it once.
waiting at a bus stop with two older women. we were all coming from a discount craft supplies sale and we talked about the good deals we got and complimented each others earrings.
a guy was waiting at a stop with me and he asked if I was in school and what I was studying. when I told him i studied geography, he got really excited because he had studied geography back in Pakistan and loved exploring google earth. we had a really fun time nerd-ing out together at the bus stop.
the bus driver had the exact same laugh as the hobo guy on the roof of the train in the polar express movie
polar express laughing driver seemed to recognize a lot of his passengers and was joking with them, including telling a drunk passenger about times he had also been really drunk. not sure it made me particularly confident in his driving, but it was really entertaining to listen to
another time a bus driver was super helpful announcing every stop, helping a passenger who didn't speak English and was lost, and greeted everyone who got on. I was getting off the bus at the last stop and told the driver to have a good day as I was exiting, and he said "only if you do!!" I didn't have the heart to tell him I was heading to a library to read several hundred pages of dense analysis of war crimes and genocide for grad school and so I probably wasn't going to have a good day and he would need to have a good day all on his own.
any time I was able to play peek-a-boo with a baby sitting near by is always delightful
like, if any of us had taken cars, the little kid wouldn't have got her kit-kats and the other passengers wouldn't have seen a really sweet genuine random act of kindness
idk y'all, I just love existing with other people on the bus and having them being a small little part of my life for a little bit while we ride the bus together.
