Coup and Contrecoup
In a collision the head will violently swing forward and violently swing back the other way. The force of this violent and sudden movement will have the brain impact against the skull and result in compression of the tissue. We can see the red highlighted area where the focal injury has occurred, even in a closed head injury it can be so severe that blood vessels may tear resulting in bleeding in the brain, lesions, contusions, and lacerations.
In French, "coup" translates to "blow" or "strike," and "contrecoup" means "repercussion" or "counterblow." In the medical context, "contrecoup" specifically refers to the rebound effect of the brain hitting the opposite side of the skull after an initial impact. The terms are often used together to describe the mechanism of injury in traumatic brain cases.
