The significance of knowing that Langdon and Santos are both former athletes.
Specifically knowing their sports and how it fundamentally represents how they work in the Pitt.
Langdon played football. Football is a team sport, but unless your a superfan, ONE person more or less gets the glory, and that person is credited for the work of their team.
Santos was a Gymnast. Gymnastics is an individual sport, but the collective individuals allows the team to advance. The team is given credit for the individuals.
So Langdon emphasizes a collective and targeted effort. Yes, HE realigned this patient's spine, because his team supported him.
Santos is an internal effort flowing out. She executed a reboa procedure, so the Yellow Section saved more people.
And when things go wrong, Langdon expects his team to close rank and defend him.
When things go wrong for Santos, she expects the team to circle and target her.
And amazingly, their both wrong!
No one reached out to Langdon, his team continued without him. They accept him back, and take him as he is, but they do not specifically curate a guarded path for him to success.
Santos keeps waiting for an attack that doesn't exist. Her new team try to reach out, to show her where the pad is, where she can safely land, but she doesn't trust them to catch her.
