This is exclusive to the novel, as the manga put Asuna in a miniskirt and the anime movie basically cut out a good chunk of Progressive's plot to focus on an original story created just for the anime, but in the light novel specifically her style of dress meant that Kirito actually did not realize Asuna was a girl until she heard her speak.

i understand the feeling. i really do. is there a center? i don't know. probably not, i think. one of the reasons i use the lowercase 'i' (and prefer my given name to be lowercase as well). like david lynch interviewing harry dean stanon:

my point is that i think i could carve it all away, piece by piece. and i think maybe the earlier work would be noticeable, perhaps extremely so, but the further i went the easier it would all be.

whether or not the mess is worth saving as it is now, the raw materials, i'm sure, are plenty to work with. let's render you down to your components and see what we can do with them. i bet i can find a new form to which you're better suited.
