“I have to, Eva! They could still be alive in there!” Carlos said, his eyes never more serious. Two members of the convoy were dragged off by something in the night toward what looked like an abandoned rest stop type of place. It was dark, and so no one had gotten a good look at the creature. All they knew was that it was no zombie. “I have to try. I’m sorry… but I can’t just let it go,” he said, holding his rifle as he ran off in the direction of the dilapidated diner.

He was speaking the truth. He could not let it go. It was not in his nature to give up on anyone until he actually saw them die. Slim chances had ended well before, and Carlos couldn’t leave behind an innocent person in need of help. Even bringing back someone in an infected state left chances for final goodbyes and last words. Those had serious value in this world.
