Though I must confess that I think C.S. Forester gave him a potassium deficiency (possibly without realizing it) in Hotspur. That man spent over 24 hours extremely seasick in Tor Bay. Notably this was while he was badly dehydrated already (and I can't remember if they ended up having to drink the fresh water on Hotspur that got contaminated with sea water). So his sodium levels are also probably too high. Poor man (I say, sounding not at all sorry).

Fix it fic but it's Wallis doing something to address Hornblower's undoubtedly ridiculously out of whack electrolytes after being on half rations of (sea-water contaminated) "fresh" water then spending 36 hours throwing up.
