study tips to remember as we inevitably have (mini) breakdowns and burnouts during the semester
- plan out the entire day the night before; set out the next day's clothes and envision the day ahead.
- studies have shown that if we plan out the day, it eliminates the fear of the unknown, reducing the fight or flight response so we can stay calm, collected, and focused.
- exercise twice: once early in the morning to get the day's momentum started and once in the evening to de-stress
- use timers to set hard deadlines for each task
- take mini breaks after each task
- during the breaks, don't scroll through social media or websites; instead, lay your head down and blank out the mind.
- eat healthy meals and try not to consume too much sugar or added fats. post-lunch blood sugar spikes are absolutely brutal.
- GO TO OFFICE HOURS to build and maintain connections with professors.
- practice active recall: don't just read through the study notes; quiz yourself and try to each an imaginary student the concepts
- study (only!!!) 30 minutes for each class every single day to retain the information learned that day, on top of the necessary homework and assignments
- TIME MANAGEMENT IS KEY. you can maintain an active social life while being on top of everything academically by using every spare minute to work on assignments, homework, studying, etc.
- remember: it might be stressful now, but imagine the peace and comfort 5-10 years from now as you're in your dream career, reminiscing and thanking your past self for making the sacrifice and working so damn hard to get to where you are.
Qualities of a Great Personality
1. Exhibit integrity – A person is said to have integrity if what they say and what they do are rooted in the same set of core values.
2. Don’t speak badly of others – If you speak badly about others to a friend, the chances are you’ll also speak badly about them. Hence, they are likely to be hesitant in what they share with you.
3. Be an optimist – This doesn’t mean burying your head in the sand. It means choosing not to dwell on the negatives, and actively looking for the positives.
4. Make the effort to be helpful – Life is so much better if you’re thoughtful and kind – and we rarely forget someone who’s caring and warm.
5. Set some goals and have some ambition - This is an extremely contagious quality. Not only will you achieve higher goals for yourself, you’ll give hope to others, and inspire them to try.
6. Seek to be compassionate and understanding – All of us face battles and experience hard times. Empathising with others when life is tough helps to ease their burden and renew their inner spark.
7. Believe in, love, and respect yourself - If you don’t accept, respect and love yourself, then you’ll send out vibes that you’re inadequate. However, it you love, believe in, and treat yourself well then it’s likely that others will treat you that way, too.
8. Persist until you succeed – Although ambition is important, it is not enough. You have to persevere if you’re going to succeed. So when you stumble get up and start again. Then keep on going till you finally succeed.
9. Be open minded and willing to learn - If you’re closed in your thinking and set in your ways then you’ll never discover a different, better way .. and you’ll close yourself off to other possibilities.
10. Take responsibility for your life - Blaming others for your problems, or acting like a victim won’t help you to move forwards, and have the life you want. Take control; stay flexible. Success is up to you.

By Sean Finnan Several years ago, I came across this quote: “If your absence doesn’t affect them, your presence never mattered.” As I was nearing the end of my O-5 command, I began to reflect on what I was leaving behind. Would my absence affect the squadron? Did my presence matter? Like all of us, […]

Our choices reflect and determine who we are.
“I trusted my team. I listened to every voice in the room. I gave myself space to think. And then I made a decision that reflected my own personal sense of what was right.
While I couldn’t guarantee the outcome, I was confident in making the decision.”
“The best we can do is find a framework that helps us consider our choices, knowing that there may not be one perfect answer.

some self care tips
things i do on my lower days to feel less icky, from me to you:
brush or tie your hair; ponytails and buns are quick and easy, headbands are good too
clip your nails; grit gets me down, so clipping my nails makes me feel like i have a fresh start
bathe/shower; if you can’t get up the energy, at least rinse your feet and wash your face
try to use soap either way, good smells lift spirits
moisturize; have some lotion in the bathroom or keep some lip balm in your pocket
don’t wear baggy/loose clothes; t-shirts are fine, but slightly tighter pants/shorts make me feel less lazy and more mobile
put on slippers or socks
sit outside/open up a window for some fresh air or turn on a fan
clean your room; sounds hard, but even a tiny corner of it is good
put on some soft music
or put on the soundtrack to a musical and sing along
eat a light breakfast
heat up the food you’re eating if it’s usually eaten hot
keep a light snack handy; a small pack of gummy bears, some fruits, crackers, whatever makes you feel good, but try to cut down on grease or heavy flavoring
DRINK WATER! stay hydrated! add some honey if you like but please drink lots of water!!
feel free to add more to this list if you have any personal tips and tricks!
