Special interest sideblog for biology/zoology related posts, not limited to any specific animals, but I have a bias towards birds and mustelids and weird little inverts especially. I work in animal care, training and presentations at a local small zoo, mostly with waterfowl and amphibians.

Expect a mix of reblogs, textposts and photography (mostly of my own pets, the animals at my workplace, or local wildlife)! i personally specialise in ethology/animal behaviour, and aspire to get into science communication or outreach related to the field, so i love talking about it when i can (Though do keep in mind I can't claim to be an authority on anything, and my blog should not be used as a resource.)

I actually (kind of) know why this is- there's actually a LOT of nēnē in captivity the UK, it's a holdover from a major (and largely successful for the time) conservation effort to breed the birds to re-release in Hawai'i and bolster the population during the 1950's. Most nēnē still in the UK, unless imported, were bred from a stock of the same three birds brought over 70 years ago by Peter Scott. You'll still find them at a lot of UK zoos and wetlands centres, and it really doesn't surprise me that private breeders have and are selling them too, though it feels VERY wrong considering their conservation status, let alone for that price (I've seen other much less imperiled bird species being sold for much more).

There are several very prolific for-profit breeders of exotic wildfowl like this one within the UK, usually landowners on very large wealthy estates. They'll spend a LOT of money on acquiring huge collections of birds and make it back by breeding and selling to other rich people wanting ornamental wildfowl on their property. Some will also exchange breeding stock and birds with accredited zoos, but it always weirds me out to know that they'd also really just let any member of the public walk up and buy a bird like these ones for the right price

It's entirely possible these two geese had that baby themselves! Here's some pictures I took of the same kind of hybrid this year; you can clearly tell they are, with their obviously Greylag body shape paired with very distinctive heads. They were all hatched earlier this year and are still technically goslings despite how big they are! I haven't managed to get any pictures with their Canada goose parent in the shot, but they're always together when I see them, it's very sweet

Found on 5 of the Hawaiian Islands.

They currently number around 3800 birds.

Considered "Near Threatened", this birds populations declined precipitously since european/U.S. occupation. Numbers have recovered due to extensive conservation efforts.
