So, I had an idea from another fic I was reading awhile ago. The fic is basically mega-abusive Celine assuming every trauma response from Rumi is just her demon side and punishing her for them, and Rumi, instead of letting herself be punished, continuously lashes out at Celine in every way she can.
Eventually Celine realizes โoh. Oh, Iโm a terrible personโ and tries to make amends.
(Itโs called I growl, snap, and snarl. You Hold me Tighter by Dakota_Doesnt_Know. Give it a read amazing angst and fluff!)
(SO MANY WORDS UNDER THE CUT I WENT OVERBOARD)
But I had a fun thought.
What would happen if Rumi blanked?
Lemme explain.
So letโs say Rumi is covered in patterns at like 15, right? Itโs the year before Mira and Zoey will be found, but she doesnโt know that. She doesnโt know that the two people who will love her unconditionally are metaphorically around the next corner.
All she knows is Celine hurt her again because she got scared of Celine. She had hissed in fear when Celine turned with the sword out, and Celine had decided to teach her not to act feral.
Of course, she uses the guise of โtrainingโ as an explanation for the abuse.
(This Celine would be remarkably like the Celine from the fic, where she cares for Rumi in a really twisted way, but the last few years of Rumi fighting back against the abuse have made her think Rumiโs a demon.)
But this time, the โtrainingโ doesnโt stop when Rumi goes down, because the more demonic aspects have begun to come out.
Tail, claws, glowing eye, the works.
Something inside Rumiโฆ shudders as the blows continue to rain.
That something folds into itself, cutting itself away from everything else that is Rumi. Celine sees the Honmoon shivering-in fear, though she doesnโt know-, and switches to her Honmoon weapon. She only uses the blunt endโฆ but even that still severs all the remaining connections, leaving one connection to the %โฌยฅ? inside of Rumi.
Celine stops after a few more minutes, panting, and tells Rumi to go back inside and clean herself up. She expected Rumi to say something snarky like the other times the โtrainingโ ended, but instead Rumi just gets up with a blank expression, turned, and walked back into the house.
Itโs rather off-putting to Celine, but she shakes it off. If it means Rumiโs demon half is controlled then fine, it means sheโs doing the right thing.
Is she doing the right thingโฆ?
(She ignores the guilt twisting inside her. She doesnโt want to deal with it right now, why should she feel bad about protecting the world from the demonic half hunter?)
But then the next day arrives. Rumi is outside, tail, claws, and eye still there. Shes waiting for Celine, just like every day, as if nothing had changed.
โฆbut the blank expression from before is there.
They start their usual training, Celine instructing Rumi on form and the exercises. But today is different, the usual snarky remarks and glares are just gone.
Itโs unsettling.
But hey, maybe itโs a good thing! Rumiโs finally stopped letting the demonic half of her biology control her emotions, this must be what that looks like!
But if thatโs the case, why does it feel so viscerally wrong?
They begin their song practice that afternoon, and itโs then that Celine realizes something is truly, deeply wrong.
The Honmoon is acting strange. Before, even when Rumi would sing spitefully, it would dance around her lovingly. But now it feels almost hesitant, like itโs unsure whether this is the same girl who it chose to be its hunter all those years ago.
Celine assumes this is somehow Rumi acting out, and forces her to โsparโ with her again. Rumi doesnโt react when she gets hit, her expression remaining unchanging as each blow lands. This makes Celine even more angry, but no matter how hard she hits Rumi she can't get the girl demon to react, no sounds except occasional quiet breaths from a blow to her gut.
Days turn into weeks of this, the Honmoon hesitantly reacting to Rumi and the "training" not doing anything beyond frustrating Celine. She just can't figure out what's wrong, why won't Rumi just fight back like she used too? Where's the girl demon that used to argue for hours with Celine about the simplest things?
Celine misses that girl.
But all that is left is the husk that looks at her with dead eyes.
After the first month, she stopped the "training" sessions outside of โcorrectional behaviorโ.
Rumi didn't change.
After two months, she stopped begging demanding to know why the Honmoon wouldn't react like it had before.
Rumi didn't change.
At the six month mark, Celine stopped speaking to Rumi. She began to direct her simply by pointing at something, and Rumi would move to do the task.
Rumi. Didn't. Change.
The honmoon began to pull against Celine at the eight month mark. A signal that a hunter is in distress, but she couldn't figure out how or where.
The honmoon can only lead a hunter to the general area, and Celine lives with Rumi, after all.
The one year mark arrives, and Rumiโs birthday arrives. Celineโฆ doesnโt want to think about it, about her, or about Miyeong. She doesnโt want to feel guilty about doingโฆ this to the girl Miyeong begged her to protect. Rumi stopped speaking around then. She still sang when directed, but no other words fell from her lips unless asked a direct question.
Rumi is blank, now.
Itโs for the Honmoon. Thatโs what Celine keeps telling herself, itโs for the Honmoon.
(The honmoon grows weaker, ever so slightly, each time Rumi gets hurt and feels nothing.)
She finds the two girls a few weeks later, after leaving specific instructions for Rumi to eat, drink, use the restroom, and train. The smaller of the two, Zoey, is brighter than the sun. So much energy, laughter, and creativity that itโs almost blinding.
Rumi wouldโve loved getting to talk to her.
The older, Mira, is sharp edges and dry wit. A perfect contrast to Zoey, and yet somehow able to keep up with her. It reminds her of how she used to be with Miyeong, back when they were younger.
Rumi wouldโve loved bantering with her.
She explains everything to them before they arrive on Jeju island. Wellโฆ almost everything. Sheโs delaying explaining Rumi, or whateverโs left of Rumi in that shell of a body. How do you explain that you somehow ripped someoneโs very self out of their body?
By the time they arrive on the island, Celineโs got a plan. She leads the girls to the compound, warning her theyโre going to see a demon for the first time in their lives but not to panic. When they head inside, they find Rumiโฆ smiling.
Ever so faintly, Rumi is smiling and sitting on the ground. A small bunny is asleep on her lap, the mama bunny chewing on grass nearby. At their approach, Rumi looks up, the smile dropping back into the horribly blank expression.
Zoey muffled a squeal when she saw the bunnyโs, and Mira quickly took a picture, but when the blank expression appeared they feltโฆ something in their souls shudder.
Something is wrong. They donโt know what, but this girl isnโt a danger.
Sheโs in danger.
Celine stalks over, demanding Rumi stand up. Rumi gently moves the sleeping bunny off her lap first, then stands, facing Celine. Celine demands to know what she did to the poor creature. Rumi doesnโt say anything, because to say something would mean she did something.
All Rumi had done was sit down. It was the first willfully disobedient choice sheโd managed to make in over a year, and it felt wonderful. That something inside her, that barely connected thing, gained another tether that day. The bunnyโs had come over, with the mama watching as the baby got into Rumiโs lap.
But Celine didnโt know that. She didnโt care. All she knew was Rumi had a small living creature that looked dead in her lap.
Celine hit Rumi, knocking her to the ground. She tells Rumi never to touch one of those animals again, that they donโt deserve to be stained by demonic hands.
Why am I saying this? Why am I doing this? Isnโt this good? She finally did something! So why?
She doesnโt even realize Mira and Zoey are in front of her until a hand shoved her back. Zoeyโs holding Rumiโs face, checking over her glowing eye.
Why isnโt she repulsed by it? That unnatural thing? Why isnโt she scared of the monster?
Mira is in front of the two, one arm outstretched to create a wider barrier and the other held in front of her defensively. Mira demands to know why in the hell Celine just hit her for not answering. Celine says thatโs the only way a demon can be made to do anything, otherwise it will try to kill humans.
Mira and Zoey look unconvinced. Celine hesitates for a moment before steadying herself. They will see.
They will know just how dangerous a demon is.
โRumi, fight Mira and Zoey until I say stop, do not use your claws or teeth.โ
The two girls donโt even have time to react. A hand shoves Zoey into Mira in an instant, with far more force than the simple action shouldโve had. The two girls stumble, barely keeping their footing, but Rumi doesnโt let up.
She quickly knocks the two girls to the ground, then waits. Celine blinks in surprise. Then she remembers, she left standing orders that if she knocked Celine over then to wait for her to stand. How curious that Rumi took that to include all humans, not just Celine.
(Rumi is fighting the order. She should keep attacking while theyโre down, thatโs what Celine wanted, but no. She wonโt hurt these girls how Celine wants her too.)
Mira and Zoey stare up at Rumi, stunned. Celine speaks then, telling Rumi thatโs enough. The half-demon lowered her arms, taking a step back as Celine stepped forwards.
She says that the only reason Rumi didnโt try to kill them both is because Celine was able to train that out of her just over a year ago today. If theyโd come here a year ago, Rumi wouldโve tried to rip out their throats. Celine says sheโs sorry that this was how they had to learn it, but they need to understand that Rumi is a demon, and a demon has no feelings.
The two girls stand, and Celine turns away, thinking that the matter is settled.
โYouโre wrong.โ
Celine turns back, a frown on her face at Miraโs words. Mira repeats herself, saying Celine is wrong. She says that Rumi didnโt attack until after Celine ordered her too. That if Celine hadnโt said anything, Rumi wouldnโt have done that. Celine sighed, saying that she gave the order so that Rumi wouldnโt kill them when she attacked, because thatโs what Rumi always did, before.
She shows them three scars, all on her left arm. Two are from claws, the third from teeth. She says this is what happened a year ago, the day she was able to break the demon inside of Rumi.
(The girls shudder, imagining what that โbreakโ must have entailed for the poor girl.)
She ordered Rumi to go inside and get dinner started. She tells the girls to familiarize themselves with the compound, she has to finalize some paperwork. The two young woman are left alone in the field, enraged and scared.
The dinner that night is a silent affair. Celine tries to talk to Mira and Zoey, but Rumi seems to be off putting to the two girls with the blank way she eats her food. With a sigh, she orders Rumi to go finish eating in her room.
She had hoped Mira and Zoey would be more talkative after that, hunters are supposed to be close after all, but the two just shared a look and kept eating without speaking.
They went to bed, Celine feeling odd. Why werenโt the girls opening up to one another? They had gotten along well enough on the way here, so why wasnโt the conversation flowing like it had before? It mustโve been because Rumi was there, Celine decides. Sheโll order Rumi to always take her meals to her room from now on.
Mira and Zoey, meanwhile, are talking non-stop in bed. They both agree that whatever Celine had done to Rumi had messed her up big time, and somehow she couldnโt tell. They decide, then and there, to make an effort to get to know Rumi, to show her that they see her as more then just a demon.
The next day, Mira and Zoey walk into the kitchen and find Rumi loading up plates. As soon as sheโs finished, she grabs her own and starts leaving. A hand on her arm stops her. Zoey asks Rumi to stay with them for the meal. Rumi blinks, before nodding once.
(Another thread reconnects to Rumi, of what that is isnโt something she can name yet.)
The three sit and eat, with Zoey talking enough for the three of them with Mira contributing occasionally. Rumi sits quietly, eating with that same mechanical efficiency. But Mira still sees it. That momentary pause before each bite as Zoey gets particularly into a certain subject.
I guess Celine hasnโt broken this girl in the way she thought she hadโฆ
Celine walked in as they were finishing up, frowning at Rumi. She questions why Rumiโs there, she told her to eat in her room. Zoey speaks up, brightly saying she asked Rumi to stay and she did.
Celine makes a mental note to leave Rumi instructions not to listen to certain directions from people when they debut. She doesnโt want her being kidnapped before they can seal the Honmoon, after all.
She doesnโt think to ask why Zoey wanted the demon to stay, when last night had been so tense with her there. Why would she? Zoey was probably just being polite, right?
The training starts that day, with a simple run. Celine gives Rumi instructions to run at a specific pace to act as the pacemaker for the two girls, to ease them into training. They all set off, and Celine watches them carefully. She shouts occasional corrections, far more gently than she used to with Rumi.
Mira and Zoey star flagging after the first half hour of running, so Celine calls for a water break for the two. Rumi tries to keep running, but Zoey catches her hand, making her freeze. Rumi looks at Zoey with that blank expression, but Mira can see it. The faintest hint of a pinched eyebrow, an actual emotion on Rumiโs face.
Celine doesnโt see it, though. She just tells Zoey to let Rumi go, and when she tries to argue Celine tells Rumi to keep running, so she does. Zoey says Rumi needs water breaks too, but Celine waves her off, saying Rumi has far more endurance then the two of them and wonโt need it for another hour.
The rest of the day goes much the same, with Zoey and Mira taking it โeasyโ while watching Rumi train. To say itโs extreme would be an understatement. Celine has Rumi running through an Olympic level training course each exercise, most of the time not even saying anything, instead pointing at a piece of equipment.
Itโs unsettling.
That night Zoey pulls Rumi back to sit at the table with them. Celine joins them again, and doesnโt comment on Rumi being there. Zoey is talking like she had in the car, but only to Mira and Rumi. Itโs odd, but Celine couldโve sworn Rumi was pausing slightly before each bite to better hear her.
Must be a trick of her tired mind.
The next several days goes the same. Wake up, eat, train, eat, sleep. Over that time, that something inside of Rumi begins to unfold. Something inside her is shifting towards the warmth that is Mira and Zoey, and she craves it how a drowning man craves air.
The incident happens a week after Zoey summons her shin-Kal. Mira had gotten frustrated, and thrown the sword she was practicing with to the ground and stalked off. Celine had walked over to her, lifting her hand to put on her shoulder.
She never saw Rumi coming.
Suddenly Celine was flat on her back, staring at the sky in mild surprise. Looking at Mira, she can see Rumi standing in front of her, crouched protectively, glowing eye trained on the threat Celine.
Celine stands up slowly, watching as Rumiโs blank expression remains impassive. She tells Rumi to move.
Rumi does not.
(That something unfolds a little further as Rumi protects one of her only friends.)
Celineโs gaze hardens, telling Rumi to move again. Mira, seeing whatโs about to happen, puts her hand on Rumiโs shoulder and says itโs ok. Only after that does Rumi move.
Celine glares at the half demon and tells her to start running laps. Rumi does so, and Celine turns, sighing, and apologizes to Mira. She says she let herself get blindsighted by Rumi and Mira couldโve gotten hurt because of it. Mira scoffs, saying Rumi wouldnโt hurt her or Zoey.
Thisโฆ worries Celine. Shes not sure where the idea had gotten lost in the last few weeks, but Rumi is a demon. Thatโs all she will ever be, and the way the Honmoon can barely connect to her is proof enough.
Sheโs trying to ignore the obvious reason why the Honmoon is failing to connect.
Sheโs gotten very good at ignoring the truth.
Celine decides she needs to show Mira and Zoey why, exactly, she did this to Rumi. Why they are safe with Rumi and why she is the only reason for it. So she calls for Rumi, drawing the girl demon over.
Mira and Zoey prepare to intervene should Celine decide to teach Rumi a lesson. That preparation is the only reason they can react when Celine tells Rumi to attack Mira and Zoey for the second time.
The fight is brutal in how short it is. Rumiโs skills still far outclass both of theirs, and she doesnโt hesitate the way they do. At least, thatโs what Celine sees.
You see, Celine has spent the better part of the last year ignoring Rumi as much as she could. A ridiculous guilt would well up inside her every time she looked at her and remembered how rambunctious and energetic she used to be.
That is to say, she doesnโt see how Rumi almost choreographs the fight. She carefully guides Mira to the ground in a takedown so fast Celine couldnโt track it. She disarmed and pinned Zoey right next to her in the next moment, but then she stopped there.
Celine waited. Every time Celine had told Rumi to attack in the past, whether it was a group of demons or Celine herself, Rumi wouldnโt let up until her quarryโs were broken and bleeding. The one time she pinned Celine she started trying to break her arms before Celine ordered her off of her.
She had also ensured, after the first time the girls fought, that she isnโt to relent when attacking anyone but Celine. She doesnโt want Rumi to stop attacking Mira or Zoey if she knocks them to the ground, after all.
So to say she is completely shocked when Rumi stands up and steps back is an understatement. Mira and Zoey, taking advantage of Celineโs shock, quickly get up.
Mira starts arguing with Celine about suddenly making Rumi do that to them again while Zoey checks over Rumi to make sure she didnโt accidentally cut her.
Celine shakes herself out of the stupor right as Zoeyโs about to touch Rumiโs face. With a shout, Celine lunges, but canโt make it in time to stop Zoey from touching her cheek.
Celine has the second shock of the day as Rumi doesnโt bite that hand. Every single time in the past, even before the last year, Rumi had bitten her whenever she tried to touch her face.
(She never considered the time she touched Rumiโs face before that began. The time she ripped those canine teeth out with a pair of pliers, holding her face in place.
She doesnโt remember last time, when Zoey held Rumiโs face after sheโd struck the girl demon. She doesnโt remember the way Rumi leaned ever so slightly into the touch.)
Another part of her ?o%# unfolds. A flicker of warmth shoots through Rumi at the contact, but she still canโt move like she wants to. She never understood what Celine had done to her, but somehow sheโd locked Rumi behind a wall inside her own body.
But the cracks had begun to show.
Celine quickly ordered Rumi to keep running laps, and told the girls to head inside. They tried to argue, saying they couldnโt just leave Rumi, but Celine doesnโt listen. Eventually, the girls acquiesce and go inside, casting worried glances at Rumi.
Celineโs worry, guilt, and anger all coalesce as the two hunters look at the demon with concern. Couldnโt they see it? The monster that the Honmoon had mistakenly chosen? The demon responsible for the death of Miyeong simply by being born?
No. No, Rumi the demon wouldnโt get away with this treachery.
She ordered Rumi to run for the rest of the night, and told keep running until morning. She left Rumi running circles, breathing steady, and locked the doors behind her. She carefully ensured Mira and Zoey were locked inside their rooms as well before going to bed.
Something Celine had learned over the past few years, and something sheโs certain still will work after this year, is that exhausting Rumi the demon makes it far more dangerous. She can only hope itโs not so dangerous as to kill the hunters, only scare them.
The dawn came far too soon for Mira and Zoeyโs liking. The two of them got out of bed with groans and complaints, bruises littering their bodies despite Rumiโs gentle takedowns.
They went downstairs and were surprised to find the kitchen empty. The two talk for a moment and decide to make breakfast for all four of them, despite Celineโs recent actions.
Celine comes out about twenty minutes later, the usual stoic look upon her face. She thanks Mira and Zoey for making breakfast, and tells them to finish eating quickly. She has something she needs to show them.
The two are nervous, and as they eat try to find out what it is, but Celine refuses to answer, simply saying they will see as soon as they finish eating.
Once the dishes are cleaned and put away, she tells the two of them to follow her. She leads them outside before pausing in surprise. Rumi is asleep on the ground, her face turned away from them.
Mira and Zoey rush past Celine, and before she can protest flip Rumi over.
Even Celine winces slightly at what they find.
Rumiโs entire shirt is still soaked through with sweat. Dried blood covers her face from when she fell, eyes barely opening despite the manhandling. Celine stands over them, trying not to let her guilt show. She has nothing to be sorry for, she just needs to get some food and water into the demon and itโll have enough energy to be as viscous and cruel as she knows it can be.
โฆright?
She tells Rumi to sit up, and Rumi does try! But after a moment, she falls back, and for the first time in over a year a pitiful groan of pain leaves the young half demon.
Celine freezes at that. Aside from singing, she hasnโt been able to make Rumi make any sounds.
Mira demands to know what Celine did to Rumi. Celine, trying to defuse the situation, says she ordered Rumi to run so they could see the demon without her normal restrains. Mira asked how long she made Rumi run for.
Celine shrugged, saying it doesnโt matter, but Mira doesnโt let up. Celine begrudgingly admits she instructed Rumi to run all of last night.
The looks of disgust she receives from the two girls makes something in Celineโs heart ache. They shouldnโt be looking at her like that, sheโs supposed to be their mentor, their shield and guiding hand until theyโre ready to hunt demons alone.
So why do they look like they hate her?
Why do they look at her the way they should look at Rumi?
Mira says theyโre going to take care of their hunter, picking Rumi up as she speaks. Celine tries to tell them they canโt miss a day of training, but Zoey interjects saying that Rumi canโt even stand, let alone train.
Celine tries to protest again, but the two bring Rumi inside before she can finish speaking, leaving her alone on the field.
The Honmoon seems to be watching her, somehow, though if you asked Celine in that moment she would say the Honmoon was trying to warn her, instruct her, if the dangers of that demon.
She doesnโt want to think about why the Honmoon would watch her. She tells herself she doesnโt hear it cry out in protest as she tears draws her blades from it. She manages to convince herself the ringing in her ears is from rage and not from the Honmoon.
She knows what she has to do.
She knows it is wrong.
She knows sheโll be crippling the hunters for this generation.
But she will not allow the demon to corrupt them further.
Inside, Rumi is sitting quietly while Mira and Zoey tend to her. Every gentle touch is like the warmth of the sun upon her skin each morning, chasing away the chill. Every comforting word like a balm upon a festering wound, helping her relax.
That thing within Rumi, that something that is everything, is on the precipice of reconnecting fully. All it needs is one last push, one last moment to let her #o%l become one with Rumi again.
Their gentle ministering are interrupted by the Honmoon crying out. Itโs not the same as a breach, where itโs pulling the hunters in.
Itโs a cry to stay away.
Celine burst through the door, blades drawn and face a mask. Mira tries to block her, but instead is slammed into the ground. Zoey tries this time, pulling out her own weapons, but she quickly finds herself disarmed and thrown backwards.
Rumi watches Celine approach, her face blank like it has been for the last year. A flicker of something that Celine refused to call fear passed through those deadened eyes. Celine hesitated for just a moment before steeling herself and striking.
Mira used that critical moment of hesitation to get in the way.
Celineโs blades cut deeply, slicing through bone, muscle, and sinew as if it were not there. Mira didnโt scream. She didnโt have time to.
Zoey did.
Celine was thrown to the side with the force of Zoeyโs kick, slamming her into the far wall. She barely recovered in time to block Zoeyโs next strike. Celine fell on the defensive, the shock and horror of what sheโd just done slowing her down and making her sloppy. Zoey was doing only slightly better, her rage leading into powerful but obvious strikes.
Rumi didnโt look over at the deadly dance. Mira had fallen directly onto her lap, clutching at her bleeding chest as silent tears fell.
That final tether connected inside of Rumi. Her %oul shivered as it touched the Honmoon for the first time in over a year. And Rumi felt everything.
Tears, hot and fast, fell down her face.
Rage, at Celine and herself, twisting inside her.
Horror, as she held a third of her soul and could finally feel her, only for that feeling to be drifting away.
But above all else.
Rumi feels hope.
She opens her mouth of her own volition.
And begins to sing. Quietly at first, before letting it grow louder, swelling with every emotion sheโs been denied for what feels like an eternity. Itโs steady, powerful in the way only someoneโs soul can be.
Because thatโs what it always was. Rumi could finally recognize what had retreated within her to protect her all those months ago.
Rumiโs soul has finally awoken.
And the Honmoon sang in joy along with her.
Zoey and Celineโs fight ground to a halt as the Honmoon danced in a way theyโd never seen before. Their eyes drawn to the angelic voice that came from the demonic hunter.
Celine could only watch in growing horror and awe as the demonic traits slowly faded. That wretched eye sheโd feared faded into a familiar chocolate brown. The tail she almost cut off once dissolved into mist. The claws sank back into her fingers, cradling Miraโs face.
And tears that fell from a face twisted with a hundred emotions onto the face of her hunter.
The Honmoon wrapped around the two of them, the demon and the dying, healing and comforting them in equal measures. Miraโs body knitted itself back together, her soul slowly regaining strength as it was drawn to Rumiโs voice, and Rumiโs body found new strength as it finally was able to let out its voice.
The song faded as Mira drew in a deep, painless breath. She sat up suddenly, patting at her chest and stomach where the blade had cut her and finding nothing. A laugh escaped her, then a sob, as she realized just how close to dying she had come.
The spell that had descended upon Celine and Zoey broke, but Zoey was the only one that rushed forwards. She wrapped Mira in a tight hug, lending her support as best she could to the trembling girl.
The two were enveloped in an impossible warmth that drew their attention, and they were met with a calm, beautiful, slightly awkward smile.
Rumi was smiling at them.
Laughter and tears began to flow freely between the three of them, as they all held each other.
Slowly it faded, leaving a gentle feeling of calm and peace that descended over them like a blanket.
Celine cleared her throat.
Three heads whipped around to face her.
Two of them narrowed their eyes, bracing.
Mira, Zoey.
One of them raised an eyebrow, catching Celine off guard again as she saw emotion on that face.
Rumi.
Celine quietly asked Mira if she was alright. Mira stiffened, glaring at her, and said yes, no thanks to you. The venom dripping in her voice made Celine flinch.
Mira went to say more, but a hand sheโd forgotten was settled on her arm squeezed slightly. Turning her head with a questioning gaze, Rumi gave her a wink before letting go and standing.
Gone was the blank faced girl who had been too exhausted to stand mere minutes ago. Now a hunter, a demon, a warrior stood facing who could be the monster of this story.
Rumi asked Celine what she wants.
Celine is shocked at the question, asking what Rumi means.
Rumi asks again, what does Celine want.
Celine hesitates, before quietly asking if Rumi really want to know.
Rumi says yes, and asks a final time; what does Celine want.
Celine looks away in shame, quiet tears falling from her face. She says she wants her friends back, her fellow hunters. She says she wants the Honmoon to be safe and strong. And she says she wants Rumi to stay Rumi, and not what she tried to turn her into.
Rumi smiled, then. A smile that was a shadow of Celineโs path, and a light to her future.
โWell then, Celine. Perhaps we should be reacquainted. After all, itโs been a year since weโve talked. Iโm Ryu Rumi, a demon whoโs a hunter. And I think itโs time we had a long, long talk. But that can wait for tomorrow. Tonight? Iโm getting my girls to bed, and sleeping in.โ
And with that, Rumi picks up Mira and Zoey, making them both squeak in surprise and blush slightly, and carried them off to bed, leaving a very stunned Celine standing in the kitchen.
The next day will be a hard one. Mira will likely chew out Celine, with Zoey throwing in her own jabs. Celine would probably try to explain herself, but ultimately acquiesce and admit she has been horrible.
And Rumi? Rumi would talk with all three of them. She would finally be able to, and would take a great amount of pleasure in using the feelings sheโs so long been disconnected from.
It might not be a perfect ending. Might not even be happy.
But thereโs hope.
And sometimes? Sometimes thatโs all it takes for things to be better.
This was just a fun little idea I had. Hope yโall liked it!
It's all wonderful. Zoey Mira meeting Rumi and immediately helping her. The Abusive Celine turning into CELINE REDEMPTION, Rumi being a feral hunter that Just Wanted Celine To Look At Her For Once, angst, hurt, comfort, more angst, and even more angst with happy ending! VERY happy ending!!!!

Okay, so I spoke with the author, and while they said they were okay with the post staying up, it felt wrong of me to keep it up the way it was, so this is OUR little secret, okay? Anyone who asked to be notified when this comes out, still will, promise!
When Rumi was a child, Celine was scared, so scared of who she might become. Afraid of the possibility of her father's heritage shining. As she grew, though, she was oh so human.
-
She is so small in Celine's arms. She looks like any other baby, save for the little purple tufts atop her head. Hard to believe her father is who he is.
She is asleep, and her eyes are closed, but Celine knows that those eyes belong to her mother. The warm brown, the kind of eyes that make you want to be good, the kind of eyes that can reach even a demons heart.
Ji-ho died for her Soleil, a demon died for her, and his sacrifice still wasn't enough. She is still immortalized as stone. Trapped far below. She wanted to fly, she always said.
"When I die, I'm going to fly. Join the birds as the wind." She'd said it so wistfully, in a way that told Celine this was something precious being put in her hands.
Celine shrugged and added, "When I die, I think I'll still be as trapped as I am now." It's more bitter than Celine intends.
Mi-yeong looks at Celine, now, head tilted, "Yeah?"
Celine hums, "Yeah."
Neither of them speak for awhile after that, Celine thinks that's all there is to say, but then Mi-yeong grabs her hand. It's soft and a little cold, and when she squeezes down, "How about you join me in the wind instead?"
She wanted to fly, and Celine took that from her because she's a horribly selfish woman. If she could fly, then she could fly away from Celine. Down there, she is always with her. She hopes Mi-yeong isn't too angry with her for that. Maybe she can make it up to her with her care for Rumi
Rumi, this tiny, precious thing. This is Mi-yeong's daughter. This is Celine's treasure. Celine will keep her safe, no matter what, no matter who her father is. Was.
She wonders, how much of Ji-ho is in Rumi? Celine doesn't want it to matter, but it probably will. After all, Celine is a horribly selfish woman.

Rumi is five and too young to know Celine's tales of demons as anything more than tales. Rumi is five and too young to know who Ji-ho is.
Rumi is five and hasn't shown anything exceptionally demon, maybe a bit odd, but nothing demonic. She is a child still, she may grow out of these oddities or maybe when she's older Celine will teach her what to show the media, but no matter what, under her roof Rumi can be herself.
Rumi is five and acts more like Celine than Mi-yeong's daughter should. She looks more like her mother every day, though.
That doesn't make up for what Celine has stolen.
The girl is human.
She is not a demon. She isn't like her father. The thought sickens her as soon as she has it.
Rumi is human. She is almost sure that. How could she not be human when she acts so much like one? How could she not be when her plate has to have trains on it? That is the pickiness of a human child. How could she not be when Celine has to tuck her in at night, or else she'll have nightmares? That is the childish fear of a human girl. How could she not be when there are no patterns marring her skin, marking her as not?
She is human, and the relief underwhelming when put next to Celine's ever present, all consuming guilt.
"'Line! 'Line! 'Line!" A little voice chants and her focus snaps to Rumi. She presents her now empty snack plate to Celine, "all done!" Ever so politely. The girl is so mild mannered, and Celine is grateful, her precious thing could be as bratty and spoiled as she wanted to be and Celine would love her, but Celine enjoys being saved the headache.
Celine sighs and smiles, "All done, huh? Good girl. Let's get this clean up and then we can do something fun, okay?"
/
Rumi is eight, and no patterns are present. Celine is sure they won't show up now, not as she's happily showing Celine her saingeom.
Such a loaded, powerful sword, fit for a hunter.
Rumi is eight, and the honmoon has chosen her as it's Gladiator. Celine is sure Rumi can not be a demon, not when the honmoon clearly loves her. She is eight.
She is a child, Celine wasn't even chosen until she was fourteen, she didn't fight until much later.
Her precious girl is eight years old, and Celine can not protect her.
She wanted to keep Rumi from everything. Not hide it. No she can not hide it when Celine is the last hunter fighting, not when Celine will have to train the next generation. She still hoped to keep Rumi separate. Keep her safe. She cannot do that if Rumi is to be a hunter.
It leaves Celine sick to her stomach. She cannot celebrate this first summoning, not when it marks Rumi as something other than a little girl. She is now part of something bigger than a little girl should be.
Celine swallows down the rising bile and vows, if she cannot protect Rumi, she will turn Rumi into the best hunter so she protect herself.
Even if that means erasing Ji-ho.
Celine is old and mature enough now to admit he was her friend, that matters less than Rumi's safety.
/
Rumi is fifteen now and has been dressing more and more conservative over the past few years. She wears nothing but hoodies lately. Celine is worried.
Maybe the media is too much for her. She knows what it's like to be a teenager with one too many eyes on her, eyes that all hold too many opinions.
It's not just the clothes. She's so withdrawn now. Her little precious girl, who used to talk her ear off barely says anything anymore.
She's pulling away. It reminds Celine of Mi-yeong when she met Ji-ho.
Celine is worried.
/
"Rumi, you have to let me see. You're bleeding." This is ridiculous, Celine wants to shout but knows she shouldn't. The internet says yelling at teens who are struggling only pushes them away.
Maybe just talking to them does to.
Rumi shakes her head.
She doesn't want to push, but Rumi isn't giving her much of a choice. "Rumi. Show me your wound and let me dress it. I'm not asking." She tries not to sound aggressive while staying firm. She probably failed.
She definitely failed, Rumi gets impossibly tense, and snaps, "I can fucking do it myself, back off Celine! I'm not gonna die on you over something that probably barely needs stitches. Stop looking at me like you're seeing my mom instead!" She doesn't mean it, probably. All the parenting books say teenagers get mean. It still hurts.
She gets up and snatches the first aid kit before hurrying to her room. Celine pretends not to see her winces of pain, Celine pretends not to see her limp, Celine pretends not to jump when Rumi's door slams.
She only hopes the commotion didn't wake Mira, the girl is barely getting settled.
It's the first time Rumi has yelled at her, or anyone, maybe.
Anger is so horribly human.
It's horribly animal to snap when backed into a corner.
Celine scolds herself for the thought, Rumi is human.
/
The girls have debuted and Rumi is eighteen now. Her girl, their girl, all grown up.
Huntr/x is an overnight success almost. The time and effort the girls put into it all paying off, Celine couldn't be prouder. She's also glad that she has the power to protect them from harsher parts of the industry, parts of the industry no one protected the sunlight sisters from.
They have a policy, Rumi reports back through text every other day. tells her anything and everything she can think of. If she misses a report Celine has the right to show up. She also has to text after hunts, let Celine know they're still breathing and catalog any injury.
Rumi hasn't been injured since that night. Celine believes it more likely that Rumi just hasn't let an injury be noticed since that night. Rumi seemed to start getting better. She still wore hoodies, but she started smiling and telling Celine everything she knew about the stars again.
Ding!
Huh, it's late, who'd message now?
Mon trรฉsor: Celine.
Mon trรฉsor: I love you.
That's... worrying. When Rumi was struggling, the internet always said messages like that were a red flag.
Celine's pulse spikes.
The honmoon feels uneasy too.
She calls Rumi.
The ringing feels like it takes an eternity
"Hello?"
The tension melts from Celine in an instant. "Evening, I love you too Rumi, but..." she has to think for a moment, "what brought the sudden affection on?"
"Oh."
"..."
"I just missed you, I guess."
She's fine... Celine is just paranoid. "I miss you, too. The house is all too empty without the three of you making a mess of it.." Celine tries to be playful and laugh, but it's true. She misses the girls. She hasn't been alone since she was younger than them.
"Celine, when you say you love me. Do you mean it?"
"Of cours-"
"Do you? Unconditionally. No matter what."
Is she trying to come out? Celine is prepared for that. She'd be hypocritical to scorn Rumi for being queer.
"Yes, Rumi, nothing you could do would make me love you less." She says it genuinely, she means.
"Even if I was a demon?"
What. What? Did she find out? How did she- nononononono.
Celine hangs up.
Rumi is human.
Me: sorry for the suddenly hanging up.
Me: that was a bit of an inappropriate question.
Me: You're a hunter, Rumi. I'm a hunter, we are hunters.
Mon trรฉsor: Right, I'm sorry.
Mon trรฉsor: It was a pretty messed up hypothetical.
/
It's been six years since their debut, the girls are getting close, Celine sees the shimmers of gold. Their tour just ended. After their break, it's time.
Rumi doesnt show any skin anymore. Head to toe, she's always covered.
Fans are concerned, Mira and Zoey are concerned, Celine is concerned.
Too bad she's never been good at telling Rumi that.
/
She feels a demon, she can just sense it.
When she turns around, sickle held out at the beast, the honmoon is upset. Why?
Magenta, angry, glowing patterns.
Magenta, angry, glowing patterns and...Rumi?
She has patterns, Rumi has patterns.
It could a trick a demon pretending, but deep down, Celine knows. She knows her daughter Rumi.
She knew she knew back then that this was possible, but the window of time... this wasn't supposed to happen. Not now.
Rumi stalks closer, and Celine can't help but instinctually tense. Then she stops short of Celine, and she can't help but relax.
"I thought... I thought I had time, but I don't. I can't fix it. I can't fix it. Celine, please, you have to fix it!" The honmoon ripples as if there's been a tear.
Celine wonders what 'fix it means' but then Rumi drops to her knees and summons her saingeom.
"Celine, please... do it." Her voices is so... small, and broken. It makes Celine sick to hear. She shouldn't sound like that.
All she can do is stand there and watch.
Rumi shudders through a breath, Celine realizes she's holding back tears.
Her grip on the blade tightens, Celine sees the blood slip down from her palms. She pushes the sword up higher, dips her head lower. Rumi begs, "Please, Celine, I'm hurting the honmoon! Can't you see? You saw! please!" She's pleading for her death. She's pleading for her death. How could her treasure want that? How could she think Celine would do it?
She can't stand it anymore. She drops down to the dirt with Rumi and throws the sword from her hands. "No. Rumi, I won't hurt you. We can figure this out, just... tell me please what happened?"
Celine pleads and holds Rumi, praying a hug is enough to hold the broken pieces of both of them together
Rumi swallow and holds back tears, Celine wishes she could tell Rumi it was okay to cry, but then she'd be a hypocrite.
She scrambles out of Celine's hold, violent, rockets herself backward. Her clothes are stained with dirt, shame, that was a nice stage outfit.
She stumbles up and reaches for her sword, but Celine is faster.
Rumi could just dematerialize it and summon it again, she's unsure she's thinking clearly enough to know that.
"Celine, please! I, I need you to fix it! Zoey and Mira saw." She lets out a small desperate sob that guts Celine. "They know too...please please I never ask you for anything, just this once!" You'll never get to ask me for anything again, if I grant you this wish, is all Celine can think.
Rumi hunches over and claws dig into her forearms, and Celine wants to tell her to stop, tell her not hurt herself.
"They know! Zoey and Mira know and... please, I couldn't die with them looking at me like that. I dont want to die like a demon!" The girls grip on herself tightens and Celine can see the blood.
"PLEASE, I'm not a demon, I've had...patterns, but I'm not a demon!" Rumi looks up, her expression is so upset, and Celine can't fix it. "Celine, Celine, Celine, I'm not a demon. You can still love me! If you love me, please kill me!"
Her cries are so desperate, each one cutting through Celine. Oh, how could her girl be hurting this bad?
'I'm not a demon.' You are one, though. 'So you can still love me.' I'd never not love you.
This is all Celine's fault. She takes a step forward and can only whisper, "I'm sorry."
Celine swallows down a lump in her throat, "I'm so sorry, Rumi. This isn't... I... this is who you are."
The reaction is instant, "it's not! Please don't tell me it is! I'm a hunter! Like you, like mom, PLEASE!" It's messy and desperate and possibly the most emotional Celine had ever seen her.
Celine sighs and stops her own tears from falling. Rumi needs her.
"Rumi, your mom was a hunter you are a hunter. Your father however..." Celine trails off. Celine didn't know demons could care so deeply, be so charming. Ji-ho was a good man, despite it all, despite what he is.
He was so excited to start a family with them, Celine and Tae-hee's involvement never bothered him, Celine asked why once he just said, "Why would I be upset with a big family?"
He considered them apart of his family.
And Celine just... threw that away.
Erased him from his daughter's life, stole the humanity he fought so hard to earn, for them to see.
He was a good man.
Celine thought it was for the best.
This proves it wasn't.
"Your father was the most human demon I'd ever seen, but he was still a demon." It's sounds abrasive, like an accusation. It's not meant to be one.
Rumi just sobs and cries out unintelligible words.
Celine hopes they aren't more pleas for death.
"I'm so sorry Rumi..." Celine breathes out.
Her precious girl, her sweet kind girl.
When she collapses back into the ground, Celine follows. Dropping down to hold Rumi.
She wishes this wasn't happening in front of Mi-yeong.
Her clothes get sullied, by tears, snot, and saliva, but that's okay, there's been grosser. Babies are gross.
"Celine.." Rumi's voice is quiet and hoarse. Her throat no doubt raw from the violent tears. Celine hums
Rumi's arms wrap around her, fingers tightening into her clothes, like she was a child again.
"Celine, you have to do it... I'm a monster... you have to do it so Mira and Zoey can take on the other demons..." she's so hyperfocused on death, like its the solution to everything.
Celine clutches Rumi and shakes her head. How does she fix this? How does she convince rumi to stay alive?
"Mira and Zoey can't do it without you. Hunters come in three for a reason, and they're unprepared for the amount demons. With the honmoon so broken... I'm not even sure it can be repaired." Celine takes a deep breath, "your sword? What's left of the honmoon is with you. You have a duty."
It's probably wrong to tell her about duty and honor right now, but it's the only thing Celine can think of to keep her alive.
"Come back when you've fixed this, okay? Go and fix this, then come and find me." She feels Rumi nods against her chest.
They disentangle silently, Rumi grabs her saingeom and disappears into smoke.
Maybe saving the world will prove to Rumi she deserves to live. Celine wishes she taught Rumi that from the beginning.
Stay alive, my precious girl, is all Celine thinks, staring where Rumi just was.
/
It's been two days, and Celine hasn't heard from Rumi, but there's a new honmoon, and it feels so... alive. It's strong and healthy and unburdened by the grief of the old one. She hasn't heard from Rumi, but she can feel her, feel she's alive. That's enough for now.
/
It's been a week since that night by the tree, Celine can't sleep because she keeps having nightmares where does it, or Rumi takes matters into her own hands or-
There's a knock at her door, she is exhausted, she doesn't want to deal with anyone.
She gets up anyways.
When she opens the door, there's Rumi, alive, healthy, but her face is screwed up into that same distressed expression of that night.
Her patterns are different.
Celine can't breathe for a moment.
She steps aside, lets Rumi in, and leads her to the table. "Sit down, would you?"
It's meant to be innocent, friendly, but Rumi's brows furrow in confusion, mouth opening and closing. She finally settles on something to say, "we really shouldn't do this in the house. It will make a mess."
Do this? What, talk? How- oh. She still thinks... she still thinks she should die.
Celine feels sick
This is all her fault.
"Rumi, sit down." It's an order, a command. Rumi has always been good at following those, so she sits.
Heaving a heavy sigh, "I'll make tea, you wait right there," she gestures at Rumi.
She sits and stares at Celine with this confused expression, and Celine can't look at her. She thinks she's here for Celine to kill her. How twisted would that be? To kill Rumi in her childhood home, with her favorite tea brewing? That's only minusculely better than doing so in front of her mother's grave.
Her favorite tea is brewing, or is it Celine's favorite tea? She was always trying to mimic her growing up, it was hard to tell if she liked something because Celine did or if she genuinely enjoyed it.
Did Celine not know Rumi? Did Celine erase Rumi and replace her with herself like she did to Ji-ho?
Celine is a horribly selfish woman.
She pours the tea into cups and brings them to the table, sets Rumi's in front of her. It's her favorite, from when she was a child, there's a train wrapping around its perimeter. For a moment, she fears it was a bad choice, but then Rumi's eyes land on it, and while her shoulders are still as tense has before, the corners of her lips are quirked up in a not quite smile.
Celine takes a sip, Rumi follows.
They stare at each other, drinking their tea in silence, the worlds most awkward staring contest.
She rubs her thumb along the cups rim, "How are Zoey and Mira? I saw a recording of the Namsam tower event. It seemed to be an intense fight." It's a start.
Rumi nibbles at her lip as if chewing on the question. "They're... okay? We're not- we- there's a lot that needs worked on. But physically? Fine. Neither of them got any serious injuries then... I would've told you."
She wondered if she would have told her had she sustained a major injury.
When Rumi huffs, it's frustrated and indignant. It reminds Celine of a time before Rumi's world became about training and demons. "Celine, why are we putting this off? This last meal thing... it's twisted. Please... just... kill me."
Celine clenches her jaw, they're doing this now. Okay. "Why? Are you in a hurry? I have time, you clearly have the time considering you're about to die, according to you."
Oh if looks could kill.
"Because I don't have time! I'm supposed to be home for movie night in a few hours!" She stands with her words, chair screeching, her palms slam on the table and it splashes tea out of the cup.
Celine pretends to think, "Then why are you here? You have something to do later. It's rude to skip plans, Rumi."
Rumi is angry or at least frustrated. That's good. She'll choose her words less carefully. Celine will be able to know what to say.
"I can't be at movie night! I can't! I can't pretend to be human," her eyes look anywhere but at Celine. "I can't play dress up as someone who deserves popcorn and soft blankets and predictable plots," She sighs and flops back down in her chair.
bowing her head and staring into her tea, she delivers Celine's final straw, "I can't pretend I deserve them even after lying for so long," she sighs "I can't pretend to be someone who should be alive..."
Celine sets down her tea and pushes it aside. Getting up from her chair, she rounds the table and kneels in front of Rumi.
"Rumi. You feel you don't deserve to be with Zoey and Mira? You are one part of a whole. You girls... you're connected. Your death would rip out a piece of them with it." Celine remembers the emptiness, the burning, the honmoons anguish. Celine hasn't felt fully alive since then.
Rumi opens her mouth to protest, Celine is faster, cutting her off with a hand on her check. "Losing your mother... it, it tore me and Tae-hee apart. Hunters... you need all three for a reason," Celine pushes down the part of her that protests this vulnerability. Rumi needs this.
"What kept me alive after losing them... was you. You are my sweet, precious, girl. My angel." Celine can see Rumi roll her eyes. "No, you are. Ironic, considering half your heritage, but... you are my angel. My north star. When I lost direction, when nothing mattered, not even my duty as a hunter... you did. You need me. You kept me alive."
Celine pauses, watches Rumi take this information in. She opens mouth her mouth, closes it and bites her lip, allowing Celine to keep going.
She brushes her thumb across her sweet girls face, "I was a guardian where you needed a mother. I thought... I thought turning you into the best hunter would save you" she was wrong. "I thought if I could just... keep you safe, alive it would be okay. I thought in order to do that, I had to keep this part of you secret, even from yourself..." oh so wrong.
Celine felt tears prick her eyes, "I know... because of me, you think you're a monster. You are not. Your father? He was good, he was a good man. He was so kind, a bit of a dork, but most importantly... he loved." He loved like he breathed. He loved everything, but he loved wind and stars the most.
She shook her head lightly, this was about Rumi. "Half demon does not make you less human. You are so human, Rumi, you are so terrifyingly human."
Celine heaved a heavy sigh, "Rumi, if you cannot live for yourself. Live for your girls, for me, and over time, we'll teach you live for yourself, but please..." She can not hold her tears anymore.
"Please stay alive," she cries through it, humiliating, but maybe it made her point further.
Rumi throws herself into her, and it feels backwards that she's trying to keep Rumi from suicide yet Rumi ends up holding her through tears.
She feels Rumis head against the back of her head. "Okay," Rumi agrees in whispers, "I'm sorry, Maman." Rumi holds her tight, Celine holds her back tight enough to crush.
"Promise me!" Celine hisses it out, quiet and wavering with tears.
"I promise."
"Promise what?"
"I promise, I won't die."
And Celine? Shatters. Her tears turn to sobs. Ugly and loud, her body shakes with decades of pent up fear and grief. She apologizes to ghosts long dead, she repents for all her mistakes, old and new. She prays for a better future.
Rumi holds her through it all. Celine is so relieved Rumi is alive for Celine to make it up to her later for it.
Rumi is alive and Ji-ho's daughter and human and demon. The most important one is she is alive.

The struggle of appreciating your own fic after you've posted it. I made that story for ME and I can't even enjoy it
Hi, different anon here! Have you considered changing the font of the fic and then reading while drunk/tipsy/high/severely sleep deprived? Huuuuge game changer, trust me.
๐๐๐๐๐
I will DEFINITELY have to try that some time. That sounds like a blast. I can imagine I would enjoy that more. Probably while drunk, or sleep deprived for sure, but I KNOW I'd have a bad experience reading my fic when high, because each time I get high, I think I'm literally dying, lmao. I would probably try biting my own arm, honestly. I have some insane trips. There's a bit of author lore drop for you.
in response to your writing feeling rookie, I genuinely don't think so! I was constantly like snapping my fingers (in my head lol) about how nice the flow is. like, everything was easy to follow, and I never got lost on what you were trying to convey. very good shit!!
Well... Wow, I am speechless... This is- this is so nice ๐ฅน๐ฅน๐ฅน
Like, literally, thank you anon, this made my night! ๐๐๐๐๐
Honestly never thought I'd get an anon message either, so that was also a very pleasant surprise, lol. I've always wanted one, haha! No joke, even before I wrote anything for this fandom. Idk what the appeal is to me.

You know what, a very specific fanfic of mine I'd like to recommend to the Polytrix masses, is this one. Because I think everyone should cry about Rumi and her teddy bear ๐งธ
That, and I'm particularly proud of it. Despite how short it is, lol
An Archive of Our Own, a project of the Organization for Transformative Works
Never thought I would get my fic recommended and I've been recommended TWICE (from what I know of, anyways). I feel so honored T^ T
Like, I know Festering, Itching, Biting 100% is decently written, but it still feels rookie to me, lol. It is rookie writing, that's my first ever actual full length fic, lmao. And rookie writing isn't bad, btw, everyone had to start somewhere!!!
Love y'all, genuinely wouldn't have finished writing that story without the Polytrix fandom!
