Flameworked Cockatoos Bird Practice

I’ll be frank, not really a fan of how these two guys turned out. I really like birds, they have a fairly easy shape to mimic in glass. I chose to try and make cockatoos (hence the weird bits on their head trying to mimic their Mohawk). I have a lot of problems with their shape. My biggest problem is with the bodies. I made the bodies of the cockatoos like the bodies of the peacocks I’d been making. This is not the right shape for these birds. I think if I ever try to make something like these cockatoos again I need to make sure the body uses vertical space more than horizontal space. 

Flameworked Pendants Title: Purple Passion

This post is about the purple pendant in the middle. I had to use this picture because the only one I have with the purple pendant alone is very blurry. When I was looking through all my pictures before I must not have noticed the picture was bad. Oh well! 

I tried something new on the purple pendant, I gave the end a little twist! The twist was fun to add, and I feel like it gives the shape a little bit more movement. I also think it’s cool how a little bit of red and blue came through. I’ll be honest I don’t remember if I put those there on purpose, but I think they give a needed break from the purple color. 

Flameworked Pendant Title: For the love of stripes

Still doing heart pendants! Out of all the heart pendants I’ve done, I think this one is the best. No cracks, its not too big and it is really heart shaped! The only issue with this one is that the little loop at the top is a little small and I had to find a different metal necklace that was thinner so it would fit. 

Flameworked Marbles Title: GROUP PHOTOS!!!!

I picked the best 3 of the group photos I had. I think they all look very nice together. Although... I’m thinking I need to learn how to do things other than the ‘twist’.... I’ll work on it. 

I have heard about these marbles called “air traps” and I think I understand the basics of them. I think it would be cool to make an air trap marble and somehow trap glitter or something in it... not sure how that would work at the moment.  

My thoughts on the Ash-Marbles:

Flameworked Marble kind of Title: Blue-Raspberry skies   (Ash marble 4/4)

This is the last of the bunch I made! I really love this color. It’s bold, but also accents all the bubbles from the ash! The twist came out almost perfect! My biggest problem with this guy is the same problem I had with the other ones. Its a pretty lumpy marble... 

I have a whole bunch of cool pictures with these four marbles all in a group. I’ll post those next with my thoughts on this little experiment. 

Flameworked Marble kind of Title: Sunset Cream   (Ash marble 3 /4)

This guy is kind of cool because I added the ash a little bit differently. The first two have the ash sandwiched between two roughly similar blobs of glass and then swirled/twisted. This one I made the spiral first then rolled the bottom in some ash and melted some glass over top the ash. So the ash isn’t dispersed throughout the entire marble. That might be why this guy is the roundest of the lot! 

I also really like this color  I used. In the rod it just looked like an opaque peach or light tan color. I wasn’t actually aware it was a striking color! It looks similar to amber purple, although it doesn’t really lean into any purples and blues. It seems to stick to the warmer earth tones like yellows, oranges and reds.  Very sunset-y.

Flameworked Marble kind of Title: Eerie Twist   (Ash Marble 2/4)

This is ash marble 2 of the four. This one actually has a little bit of a color called ‘slime green’ in it. I really like this green color in this marble because it’s so subtle. 

It seems like the biggest defining characteristic of the ash marbles is all the bubbles and air that get trapped in the glass. Well, that and the uneven shape. This is not an original idea. Someone told me about how sometimes people will put the ashes of deceased loved ones in glass pendants or decorations. Honestly? Not my thing. The ashes I used in my marble are just wood ashes- as far as I know not dead-people ashes!  

Flameworked Marble kind of Title: Ice Ball  (Ash marble 1 of 4)

OK, so this guy is really interesting and is part of a set of 4. I actually used ash (yes, the stuff from burned organic material) in it! It gave such a cool affect! There isn’t really much ash visible, what we can see however is a whole bunch of bubbles of all different sizes! 

Ash is actually an ingredient in glass, so the ash doesn’t stick around the way dichro does. Instead it mixes in and actually changes the formula of the glass a little bit. So technically, the glass that makes up this marble isn’t really borosilicate any more! 

Flameworked Pendant Title: Iridescent Leaf

 I actually made this one ages ago, but I just recently found it. I think I used some amber purple for the color on the main part of the leaf... I’ll be honest it was so long ago I don’t really remember... That being said, I do remember that I was just using this to play around with shape and color. I think the color came out really cool, my biggest dislike about this piece is actually the blue backing. I put a blue stripe down the back where the stem would be on a real leaf, but I didn’t take the time to melt it in properly. So the line is kind of lumpy and doesnt look like it is completely melted in with the rest of the glass. 

Flameworked Marble Title: Firestorm

This is another marble with dichroic glass in it! It gives it a terrific sparkle and it plays so nice with the Amber Purple. I couldn’t get the Amber Purple to change into the blues and purples I was hoping for. THAT being said, I am glad it didn’t because the colors I did get are fantastic shades of reds and yellows and oranges. 

Flameworked Pendant Title: Summer Sky

This was the second half to my friends gift (I know, I know, I’m just getting around to posting it. I’m very slow). I actually used a little bit of dichroic glass in it, although it’s really hard to see. I’m very fond of the pattern inside the glass, but not so fond of the shape of the glass itself. It’s a little oddly shaped. Fortunately the direction of the hook hides the misshapen-ness and still allows it to be worn reversibly. 

Flameworked Turtle Title: One Spotty Boi

I’ve recently been playing around with new designs. I have gotten pretty bored of the fish I’ve been making. Hence all the peacocks recently. This is another design I’ve been playing with. I was aiming for a Galapagos Turtle here, but I think I’ve captured more of a dinosaur look. At the moment I’m pretty pleased with it for a first try. Points that I’ll want to pay attention to in the future include making the “spots” look more like the patterns on turtle shells and mastering a more realistic turtle shape.   

Flameworked Fish Title: Phoenix Fish

This fish was one of my first major attempts at playing with Amber purple. I’d used it in small doses before, but never in such a large quantity. I am in love with the colors it turned. I’ve actually had this fish done for a long while. It sat at work for a while with a crack in its top fin. Typically when I get cracks in my pieces they’re pretty severe and can’t easily be fixed, but this one was fairly small. The crack needed only a couple seconds in the flame and it completely disappeared.
