I stumbled upon your blog recently and it inspired me to dig out my paint and start doing portraits again. 🎨 Three questions: 1.) What paper/ material do you find works best with acrylic paint. 2.) Do you do "first drafts" of your portraits before starting with your final? 3.) Do you take your own pictures to paint from or do you sometimes paint portraits from photos you found on the internet? Thanks in advance. 🌸 Your art is absolutely lovely!
Hi anon! Thank you for your kind words! To answer your first question, I generally work on canvas, either primed or unprimed. However, acrylic is really versatile, so I have used it with thicker papers as well. As for your second question, I don't! I honestly don't even keep a regular sketchbook. I do, however, months of visual research before I begin painting (such as find a color scheme, mood, reference, composition, etc.) And for your third question, I have done both! I'm transitioning out of using online references and into using my own. Online references are quick and easy to find, but I do feel guilty with the thought that I'm stealing someone else's image. Also, taking your own reference photos adds to the depth and meaning of your work. I'm trying to become more independent in that way. I hope this answered all of your questions! I'm happy to answer anything here, or over private message as well. 🎀

I can't decide whether to sell or burn my old work...so for now I'll just keep it stored in a closet 👍🏻

Note to self: Committing to an oil painting on raw, unprimed canvas was a vv dumb idea.
