Honest (SPOILER) thoughts regarding the GO finale, I think a valuable piece of writing people are kinda overlooking is the INCREDIBLE subversion of their main motivations
Like we as the audience are lead to believe from the start that Crowley is this jaded, cynical little fucker whoâs fond of one person and one person only. The typical ânothing in this world matters except youâ grumpy who doesnât give a shit about a universe that rejected him. Aziraphale, likewise, is pretty easily seen as the bigger picture guy, itâs obvious he loves Crowley deeply but itâs the mission of the larger world, the good of the people, that draws his time and energy- he chooses that responsibility more than Crowley. These are the roles weâve seen them play and the archetypes weâve kinda locked them in to. It matches with their grumpy vs sunshine attitudes, their aesthetics etc
Then in s2 we started noticing some cracks in it. Weâve met Angel Crowley who is a beautiful sunshiny dreamer who cares so deeply about the gorgeous world around him. Aziraphale starts to get a bit wrapped up in his own self interest from time to time, caring more about his bookshop or Crowley or even Jim than his larger mission. These little moments added depth to their characters, but ultimately didnât shake our ideas of them. But THEN-
When they were asked by God what they would save, everything in the world has been stripped from them. The universe is lost- all that remains is each other and the final question of âwhat in the whole of existence matters to you most?â And we think we know what theyâll say, we think the way weâve been taught all this time- Crowley is the selfish lover and Aziraphale is the heartbroken rejector.
But instead we meet their cores. We meet the truest stripped down versions of themselves and we learn the truth. Aziraphale picks Crowley. His lover, his life, the being that completes him. He makes the selfish, or loving, choice, no matter what it means to the world. And Crowley- Crowley is crying for the world. He is so utterly helplessly desperate for humanity to have their chance that heâs willing to throw away everything out of his sheer love for them. Weâve met the old part of him again, the artist and the lover, the selfless one heâs had within him all along. And for Aziraphale weâve finally met the lover in him too, the one whoâs finally willing to put his love for Crowley above all else.
I donât know but I think itâs absolutely beautiful to get to know characters that you thought had these black and white motivations, only to discover that when it all comes down to it, they are capable of throwing everything we assumed about them out the window. Thereâs no black and white or even grey, but a whole world of mixed up colours and choices that make them whole. The sinful Angel and the selfless demon to the last.
No wonder nobody could find you. This is where you were keeping all your memories. All your... you.
It's This. Beelzebub isn't even looking at the man next to her. That's not the person who is their hell and happiness. He's not in there. He's where his memories are -- in the fly.
In the finale ending we were given, I can see the power of Crowley's Choice, the incredible love for humanity in their sacrifice, and the beauty of Aziraphale's willingness to disappear into Nothingness with the one Being that makes him feel complete. And my little ace/grey heart is satified without a big show of physical affection, so I'm not sulking over the absence of a Kiss.
But this world, this story, told us that memories are what makes you You. That shiney new children can't just replace the children you already love. That other couples lives might mirror your story, but aren't actually You. That we build off of what is broken, and work to fix it as best we can. That brokenness is still lovable, deserves love and can find love.
Crowley told us the rules of the Book of Life, that what gets erased will have never existed. God contributed another worldbuilding rule, a coldly finite and absolute statement, in Her response to Crowley and Aziraphale's decision -- a Hobson's Choice, btw.
Eventually there'll be humans and life, in all of its mundane glory. Something that both of you will neither know or experience, though.
This is what many of us are struggling with. As much as we love this show and respect Sir Terry, this finale only gives Our Ineffables a happy human ending if the show unravels nearly every rule they ever told us -- including the last words God spoke moments before Asa and Anthony meet.
According to everything we were told, Aziraphale and Crowley are gone. It's a beautiful love story echoing throughout time and space, but it's not theirs anymore. What made them.. Them... is gone.
It's okay if you see it differently.
But many of us are stuck here, trapped in a limbo where our minds and hearts are faced with our own Hobson's Choice. Unexpected. Impossible. Heartbreaking.
Please be kind. We have a lot to lose.
We love this beautiful world too.
To Our World...
My own two cents.
The world was wonderful and beautiful, and it made it what it was because it had angels and demons in it.
I adore the theme of giving them a choice. I adore how they showed their affection for each other. I adore Asa and Anthony. I adore Time After Time.
However, I do not believe total annihilation is a solution to universal problems. You may tear down the institutions, but not the people in them.
Angels and demons are still people. People of this universe. A fundamental species of this universe that either got completely annihilated, or got fundamentally changed to fit this new world, whatever your theory of "are they the same person or not" you believe in.
That they saw no way of rebuilding what they loved in a constructive manner is heartbreaking. No stories, no memories, no experiences of their world. God couldn't be reasoned with, institutions couldn't be changed for the better even with the authority of God, no free will for all angels and demons, no, a new world had to be built without this species who were just as much of a part of this universe as humanity and God.
I liked GO3, I hate the solution to "saving" their own world.
Fanfictions writers, you know what? The book of life created an aziracrow universe, and the go3 ending is one of them but perhaps not the original.
Keep writing. Keep drawing. Keep living and loving, that's what Aziraphale and Crowley would want from you.
Lets keep them alive.
@mirjam-writes wrote a fic about easter witches and I got to make something fun for it. It's fun and cute and wife-y and you should go read it!

Chapter 1: 'He returned to this seat like an old friend, vanishing into the hush of old books.'
In the Margins by @thisisshiny , which finished today (and I'm coping well enough).
Chapter 2: 'Crowley paused, twirling his pen. This was either brilliant or completely mad. Probably both.'
Chapter 5: 'Wednesday morning found Aziraphale sitting in his favourite armchair with a cup of perfectly brewed Earl Grey.'
Chapter 7: 'He stood with perfect posture, one hand resting on a book spine while he read, completely absorbed in whatever poetry had caught his attention.'
I was thinking, a story about books should have traditional illustrations, think of the kind Austen books have, for example by Charles E. Brock or Hugh Thompson.
(Only problem is, I'm used to the complete control of digital, not to mention painting, which is in my opinion is a medium least prone to mistakes and errors. Absolutely terrifying trying out traditional ink. However, authenticity. Can't get this feel with digital "ink" brushes, I've tried. It works as well as a cure to perfectionism, in the best worst way.)
You may also have a bonus illustration, which I think I executed clumsily, so it's a little bit of a part of this series, but only by half. An honorary part.
GO3 soon, GOons
OH! Both the story is incredible and I think about it every day. The art is so lovely and fitting. But both together elevate this fic to an exquisite level of storytelling. I have no words!
Such kind words and then I go slander your bread pudding.
It is quite a special story.
I was feeling sad and I made it everybodyâs problem
But hey! We are actually ACTUALLY getting the resolution to this whole sadness in less than 2 weeks!!!
Also this was furiously made in my frustration and by the time I calmed down I noticed Iâd drawn all of Aziraphale in a single layer * nervous eye twitch *
Dear 3D printers of GO fandom, or anyone close to a 3D printer, here you have a free STL file, from me to you.
If you do get it printed, come show it to me!
Cheers

Considering how long the lift ride was at the end of s2, thatâs quite a while to stand silent with your crush and contemplate your situationship

In the Margins: Next Story is up!
Aziraphale invites Crowley to a wine journey.
They travel the world from their dining room table.
In the Margins: The Wine Journey
As usual it is part of my âdefinitely ending soonâ Margins series. This will be the penultimate story.
Next week, Iâll post something deeper from their past â before they even met. And then, an epic epilogue to end all epilogues.
If you don't know the series yet, best to read the main story first:Â In the Margins.
Enjoy!
Her Shininess played by Emma Thompson, at least a lookalike.
I'm taking the news pretty well. At least better than when the first "ending soon" appeared (which birthed this). I'm brave like that

My take on the viking designs \m/
Although, thereâs a lot of finnish influence, and one pair of shoes is baltic design of the same time period -ish
But, i mean, the further you look from, the closer the areas are to each other. Iâll take my creative liberties
