Has a baleen whale ever been kept in captivity for any length of time? If so was it successfully released or did it die?
there have been several instances of young baleen whales running afoul of something and being captured for rehabilitation, yes! they were mostly gray whales.
which makes sense, gray whales are slow enough to get caught in the first place and hardy enough to not immediately stress themselves to death over being poked and put in a tank (as long as hundreds of pounds of delicious shellfish are on offer, anyway)
none of them were ever kept very long, they were rehabilitated to a healthy weight and then released. (healthy weight for a juvenile gray whale is almost 20,000 lbs. BIG baby)
this lives in the post now

you will probably not look like a skinny white anime girl when you transition you will likely look like someone's mom and you need to realize how swag this is
I saw a picture of my mom last week and did a double take because we both realized how similar we look. skinny white anime girls are not real women but your mom is. I promise you look like a real woman

The Boroughs is also, intentionally or unintentionally, a commentary on the way elderly people are treated and respected. The fact that many older people in care homes are abused, constantly gaslit, or treated as little more than commodities to make money from is not fiction, it’s a very real social issue tied to the private elderly care industry in general. And so is the paternalism and condescension with which they’re treated, as if they were children instead of fully functional adults.
The Boroughs really emphasizes this point: they’re treated like oversized children when in reality they’re simply retired professionals who are still fully capable, and it’s precisely those skills and experiences that allow them to move the story forward. Judy is an experienced reporter, a Black woman who fought her way into a professional career in the 1970s and obviously isn’t going to sit quietly in the face of a mystery or an injustice. Sam is an aerospace engineer. Wally is a doctor with decades of experience. Renee spent her whole life as a manager and knows exactly how to deal with assholes.
These are skilled, intelligent professionals in their respective fields, and they don’t stop being those things just because they get older. If anything, they’ve spent an entire lifetime specialising and building that expertise. I think the series reflects this beautifully, and honestly I find it really important because, yes, your grandparents were people who raised entire families before you put them in a nursing home, and that’s something people should remember. They’re not idiots. They’re just old.
i actually think it was really hot for trinity santos to walk in on her first day with that amount of confidence, make nicknames for every loser in there, try and get to do as many cool procedures as she could, catching some asshole stealing drugs, flirt with a 30+ year old surgery resident and still bag her after stabbing her in the foot, and just in general walking around and taking up her rightful space. i think women should do that more
