a hopeful romantic | miclara {flashback}
Mickey was very confused about the status of his and Clara’s – whatever it was. Relationship, if he was allowed to call it that. He wanted to, more than anything, but didn’t know how to bring it up. It was very difficult for him to think about getting rejected again or ruining what he and Clara had by trying to take things too quickly or being clingy. He was used to feeling like he was clingy and to acting clingy when things started to go wrong. Even the idea of bringing up their relationship status made him feel that way.
But it was driving him mad. It seemed like she cared about him; but how could he be sure? How unless she said it with her own mouth?
He clearly wasn’t the best at deciphering signals; so even though he was almost always at Clara’s house and even though she looked at him the way he suspected he was looking at her, did that really mean anything?
It took him a lot of nerve to come up with a romantic date night, where he would ask her about what they were. They’d been on dates before, but could they really count as dates when there wasn’t much to do in the Pocket universe anyway? This was going to be different, though. He was going to do everything himself.
None of it would have been possible if it hadn’t been for River Song. She not only helped him cook Clara dinner (a simple spaghetti, salad and garlic bread dinner, but it definitely was safe to eat and that was a start!), but she also helped him pick out music, flowers and candles and helped him dress himself in something that flattered him and fit the fashion of Clara’s time, not his. That meant his trousers were fitted but not skin-tight, a dark blue jean color, with a white button up top, the sleeves rolled up to reveal the forearm and a skinny, black tie. He looked really good, if he didn’t say so himself. Even he had confidence as he strolled up to Clara’s front door, picnic basket in hand, before knocking on the door.
The confidence was short-lived, though, as knocking on the door meant he couldn’t run away. This was it and anything he did or said would be held against him in her memory for the rest of their lives.
He nearly changed his mind, turning around to flee when he heard the door open behind him. “Heeeeeey,” he said as he spun back around to face her, his smile all teeth and not entirely genuine at first. That was, until he saw the way she looked. “Wow,” he breathed. He’d told her to dress nicely and that he’d had plans for them tonight, but she was breathtaking.
Date night. Clara never really knew what to expect from a date night. Mainly because she’d never actually had a proper boyfriend (or girlfriend, for that matter) long enough to actually make it to date nights.

Yeah, at first she’d felt bad spending so much time with another woman’s man (or future man, she still rather liked to believe he was from the past he remembered and not the future the Doctor had warned her about). And while yeah, the closer they got the more the guilt grew and festered she sort of couldn’t help herself. She was a smart young woman, who didn’t need a man to make herself feel whole -- yes. But dammit if feeling so wanted by someone so sweet didn’t make her feel good. And she deserved that, didn’t she?
It was like she was just keeping him warm, or whatever.
Yeah, that sounded worse than she’d meant it.
Hearing a knock on the door she checked her reflection in the vanity mirror one last time (it wasn’t quite as ornate as the one she had back home, but it worked just the same) happy to see her make up was still as impeccable as when she’d first applied it, and made her way down stairs on heeled feet.
Her dress -- dark blue, and fitted in all the right places -- swooshed as she moved on quick feet, smiling broadly as she pulled the door open to reveal her date.
“Hey yourself,” she teased, linking her hand with his and tugging him over the threshold for a proper greeting, which she happily gave him in the form of a peck on the cheek. “You look nice,” she commented, stepping back slightly to give him a once over.
