@piraticalwitâ asked: â donât look at me like iâm a hero. youâll only disappoint yourself. â //Â FROM HERE
Thereâs a brief scoff - more sharp inhalation than any lingering noise - that precedes the elderâs words as fingers lift to brush against the coarse stubble at his chin. âIf I were looking for signs of heroism, little brother, I would have to cast my gaze upon the pages of fiction for I fear there are few that can carry such a title upon these shores...â Thereâs no bitterness in the tone that lingers - evidence long since buried, settled to rest on the seas - and lips curve up in a slight smile as his hand drops to rest against the surface in front of him.
There were no illusions left for Liam Jones, least of all the concept of those who held an absence of the core human failings. He had simply seen too much to think such things were anything but fanciful.
The smile mutes soon after, settling into a soft upturn of the lips rather than anything pronounced as he studies the otherâs features quietly. âThat being said, there is little I can see in you that will disappoint me...â
Itâs not entirely true; his younger self was self-entitled and bitter in the situation and certainly could identify every fault he saw in Killian, particularly on the days when actions sabotaged his efforts to better their lives. That being said; he has had plenty of time - too much - to consider himself; to decide on the path he wants to take and it is not that of the parental figure any longer. Killian is long since needing that from him.
âThough I cannot say I am entirely behind the path of piracy. You way have to walk me through that decision.â He has his prejudices there; years spent in the Navy taught him that pirates were those that did not fall in line. those who flaunted a breaking of rules with no morals and that could hardly be a representation of the good form he sought.
But this was Killian. No matter how much something stood against his personal beliefs, he would concede to give the other a chance to voice an opposing view, to offer clarity before he cast his true thoughts on the matter.

âCome hell or high water                                 I cannot leave my brother.â
im-possiblelimitsâ / @thebrcthersjonesâ
the lingering silence is welcomed, liam more than content to just sit there with his brother & enjoy his quiet company for a time. & grateful that he doesnât seem to be the only one comfortable with not needing to constantly talk with whoeverâs around.
liam smiles, amused, as he glances back over at the other. there are plenty of reasons for the lack of familiarity between the two of themâ death, centuries between them, varying realmsâ & he canât exactly blame either of them for any of those reasons. heâs grateful for the openness of liamâs inquisition, glad that he doesnât seem to be in search of anything specific; simply wanting to get to know his youngest brother, nothing more. âwell, from what iâve heard from killian, it seems like the three of us are a lot more alike than youâd expect, all things considered. most notably the fact i became a sailor just like the two of you did, although aboard a submarine instead of a ship like the jolly roger is. it might not have been something i ever imagined myself becoming as a kid, but i canât imagine doing anything else with my life at this point.â
He was patient as the younger contemplated his question, only a smile lingering on his lips as he gave his brother the space to find an answer to the question. He was no fool, he knew that there were topics the youngest Jones would prefer to avoid, he could see the look in his eyes, one that he saw reflected in Killianâs eyes or even his own when he glanced in a mirror, that marked the path they had trudged as uncomfortable. But there were also things he hoped the other would share and his smile widened encouragingly as Liam offered further insight to him.
âThen you truly are a Jones, for our blood is more of the sea than it is of the land...â he chuckled, glad that they had much in common. âThough I cannot say I have ever had opportunity to live beneath the waves in such a manner. Iâve always been better suited to chasing horizons.â Of course there had been times that he had been cast beneath the waves, but he preferred not to linger on them. âWhat has been your favourite voyage then? Or discovery? I am sure you have seen many things few are chanced with the fortune of casting their gaze upon...â he probed, finding this line of questioning to be one they could settle upon. âAnd of course do not think this questioning is one-sided, ask anything you wish...â he added, tone reassuring. It was not an interrogation after all, just two long lost brothers finding one another.

â He does do that, yeah, â she replied, indicating that Killian did, indeed, speak of Liam ( though surely the elder Jones didnât need confirmation of his brotherâs fondness ). It wasnât much â- at least in the way of painting a picture of his sibling and their backstory â- but he made his love for Liam abundantly clear.
Discomfort rolled off of him in waves, brows furrowing as he attempted to find a topic of conversation that might hold her attention. Even if Killian had spoken of her, Ruby had no doubt the small tidbits werenât enough to indicate her interests. â Still getting used to all of it, arenât you? â A pause, a ghost of a smile on her lips. â Feel free to shut me up any time. Iâm a waitress in a small town, the one thing Iâm good at doing is talking up a storm. â
While he knew his brother often spoke fondly of him, the confirmation of it from someone with someone still brought a smile to Liamâs face. Some things never changed, and though he did not believe he deserved his brotherâs adoration thanks to some of the darker choices he had made in life, he was glad he had it anyway. In many ways, Killian was as much an anchor to him as he had been to his brother.
His brow raised at her words and then a low chuckle slipped past his lips as he tipped his gaze away from her briefly before returning it to her once more. âThat obvious am I? Well, you are not wrong... It has been, is still, quite a lot to take in...â he admitted, rubbing a hand against his chin before gesturing before him as if offering her the floor. âIâm content to listen, after a lifetime with Killian it is one of my better skillsets...â

âMm, I have discovered that, Liam Jones.â Edward smiled fondly. âBut, worry not, my interest in you is not purely aestheticalâŚâ He let a hand glide smoothly down Liamâs arm, his fingertips skimming cloth, until he could curl his fingers lightly around Liamâs. âYou and I have a history, after all. I have always valued you and your brother very strongly. You are family to me.â He gave Liamâs hand a gentle squeeze. âHowever, whilst I view Killian as a brother, you⌠you are so much more.â
An unbidden shudder made its way down Liamâs spine at the ghosted touch of fingertips along the length of his arm, still not quite willing to completely believe what this was, but wanting it enough to entertain it all the same. When fingers curled around his own, he squeezed gently back, holding to the other manâs hand. âWe do have a history...â he agreed, voice hushed as he spoke. âI am, am I? Well I am glad... I cannot say my thoughts on our bond have been so clear...â he murmured, not knowing what he had thought, only that it was not the ties of brotherhood that had kept them connected.Â

âWell, Iâll do my best not to splash out too much without your say-so, but I canât promise anything.â James grinned. âIâm a giving person and⌠well, itâs how I express myself. You know Iâm not good with words.â He gave a soft, contented sigh as kisses were trailed over his face, happily returning the kiss given to him. It was rare for Liam to be the one to initiate first - simply because he was very tactile and physical - and he thoroughly enjoyed it when he was.
When they parted, Jamesâs mind went back to his plans. His eyes scanned the room, already picturing the changes he would make - nothing too drastic, since it was a room Liam would have to exist in, and heâd keep Killian on tap for his input, since he knew his brother the best. He was already thinking a nautical theme, of course. Heâd do some online searches to find the right kind of things and heâd get Killian to dig up anything personal to Liam that he could work with.
âIt wouldnât be you if you completely cut it out...â Liam admitted quietly, smiling at the other as he looked upon him. âThough forgive me if I act out about it, at least you know why now,â he murmured, turning his gaze away briefly to look around his bare room. âIâve always had better things to put the money too. Making sure Killian was happy, healthy and wanted for nothing he needed was always most important. I could not afford for them to revoke the decision...â he murmured, voicing the secret fear he had carried since he had received the paperwork permitting him to take the role of Killianâs guardian.Â
A sigh escaped him as he pushed away the negative feelings and then lowered himself to lay next to James on the bed. Gently he pressed his arm across Jamesâ waist and curled against him, content to simply be together for the moment, not needing words in the moment. He rested his head against Jamesâ shoulder then, another sigh escaping him as he did so, the sound content as he exhaled slowly.

A Moment at EaseÂ

He did bark out a laugh at the dryly delivered remark, knowing his lack of patience in certain matters had definitely given him a reputation. âWell, fair enough to that.â He grinned, letting a hand fall upon Liamâs shoulder. âWhy you? WellâŚâ He leaned in, feathered a kiss across his cheek. âI do believe you are utterly unaware of just how attractive you are, hm? That in itself is wonderfully endearing, Captain.â
Smiling as he heard the other laugh, Liam leant slightly to the touch of then hand on his shoulder, arching an eyebrow at the other manâs words. âI rarely consider myself in such terms... it is not something that often captures my mind...â he admitted, tipping his gaze up to the other man, searching his expression for jibe or mockery and finding nothing. âYou really are a peculiar man at times, Ed...â he voiced, shaking his head with a fond expression, not certain what about his lack of awareness made him endearing but heâd let it slide.
Just A Moment More

James wasted no time, digging out the remote for the TV and instantly opening up one of the various streaming apps programmed into it. âWell, I was thinking I could finally get you to sit your ass down and watch that film I keep pestering you to watch.â He grinned, already searching out the title. âConsidering thereâs more than one in the series, it could take me years to get you to watch them all at this rate.â
Truthfully he expected Liam to fall asleep during the film - not through a lack of interest, of course, but because he recognised how exhausted he was. Besides, he didnât mind watching these particular films more than once. Heâd grown up reading the books, after all. He didnât give Liam any chance to object - not that he thought he would - and immediately set the film up to play.
A chuckle escaped Liam for he knew that James had been attempting to wrangle him into watching the films for some time, and he dipped his head in a nod. âAye, that seems fair seeing as Iâm using your place to rest up...â he mused, still finding the notion of being at rest something foreign or strange, however he knew that heâd accepted it now and to try and get out of it would be more trouble than it would be worth.Â
As the title sequence came up, he stifled a yawn and shifted more comfortably against the other, recognising the signs of another wave of exhaustion creeping in, this one threatening to put him to sleep. He attempted to stay awake, managing to pay attention to a good half an hour of the film, but as they crept nearer to the hour mark he lost his focus and began to drift, eyes fluttering open now and then as he stubbornly fought off the lure of sleep until eventually he could not ignore it and conceded to its pull.Â
