The cottage was close to the summer palace, and with her parents officially deciding to spend a few days in the latter once a month they had created a perfectly good reason for a handful of trusted servants and guards to stay there, and help Emma with her pregnancy and then children daily. The plan of getting quickly married had been wiped away by the awakening of her magic, and considering the situation she had expected far less happiness when it had all started, three years before, than what she actually felt now.
One day, when hearing knocks at her door, Emma thought it was her maid Lotte who had left a basket there again. "Just a minute!" she called out cheerily, leaving the children to play in the other room and grabbing the basket. "Here is your-" her breath caught in her throat as she found the pirate at the door, met his eyes, a shade of blue she saw every day in their daughter, and dropped the basket. "Killian..."
She instinctively beamed and almost reached for him with both hands, but then thought of what was yet to come, "I thought you had forgotten me." No matter what words they had exchanged or what she had thought she had seen in him, he had still disappeared, "You never answered my letters, never came to visit..."
