honestly I could see an AU where this is actually a huge internal conflict for him. Like, Kevin's relationship with Exy could be SO complicated because I feel like, internally, he probably sees Exy as one of the only things he actually has. His mother is basically the only person from his childhood that he remembers as being genuinely good to him, and Exy is the thing he has left that connects him to her. Except he barely even knew her. She was murdered when he was young, so most of what Kevin knows about her is through Exy. The stories, the records, the things people say about her, the fact that she was important because of Exy. Exy is basically the physical proof that she existed and that there was a part of his childhood that wasn't completely awful. And then there's the REALLY fucked up part which is that the reason she died was because of Exy. His entire life gets destroyed because of Exy. Obviously, the actual problem is the Moriyamas and what they did, not the sport itself, but I can absolutely see a traumatized kid who can't exactly process “the powerful criminal family that controls my entire life is responsible for ruining everything” instead going “Exy ruined my life.” It's a lot easier to blame the sport than the people who actually have power over you. So you get this really weird relationship where Kevin could genuinely love exy AND resent it at the same time. Because exy is his mother. exy is his childhood. exy is the reason people value him but also exy is the reason people hurt him, exy is the only thing he has left from his mother, exy is also the thing that took her from him. So imagine Kevin growing up and genuinely not knowing whether he loves Exy because he actually loves the sport or because it's the only way he knows how to stay connected to the one person he thinks loved him without conditions. And then someone asks him why he plays and he just… doesn't know. Because “I love Exy” and “Exy is all I have” are two VERY different statements, but Kevin might not know where one ends and the other begins.
