The Movie Is As Great As The Book
i NEVER thought i could say that about ANY adaptation, but here we are
the only things i was upset about in the movie(BOOK AND MOVIE SPOILERS UNDER THE CUT):
•Not enough of Grace being stupid when he should be, not enough of Grace being smart when he should be (like, sometimes he gets to a correct conclusion a LOT faster than in the book, and sometimes he is much more dumber), but honestly, the balance of dumbsmarts is still in him
•where this???:
i wanted Rocky to be more bitchy sometimes, lol. OH AND ALSO WHERE STRATT MONOLOGUE IN THE CELL. THE ONE WITH "i majored in history, and the main cause of war through human history was Famine. Famine causes War, Pandemics, and Death." LIKE. THIS MONOLOGUE CHANGED ME AS A PERSON. WHERRREEEEEEE
•where "i commend you to the stars" moment!! i know grace talked a lot about his deceased friends, but where is his corny ass phrase to say goodbye to them!!!!
moments i LOVED about the movie:
•How they solved the problem with Rocky's language(by giving him a voice!)
•Him hearing everything Grace says for the logs
•Grace making me cry by how he reminds me if myself SO MUCH IT HURTTTSSSS like YEAH im ALSO a COWARD!!! i am afraid of rejection!!! i understand his decision to become a teacher on a personal level, because i would do the fucking same if i was promised to be cherished by little kids!!!!! but at the same time i always sacrifice myself for others, with a smile on my face! and OHHHHH how much i cried when Grace realised Rocky can get enough fuel to get him home.
it is quite easy for me to watch someone i relate to going through all the tragedies and deaths and whatever. it is a lot more emotional to watch someone i relate to so much, get a happy ending after all the struggles.
•all the new scenes, actually! like literally all of the scenes original for the movie are PERFECT
dunno what else to say, i am always very sleepy after crying, so im gonna go sleep. read the book, watch the movie, do both in the 1.book2.movie order for the best experience of your life.

i also need you all to know the actual translation of "pebble" isnt like the small rock pebble, it does literally translate to "baby" and simon would hear it as "baby". i wrote "pebble" because grace translated eridian babies as "pebbles" for his own amusement. therefore: you, the viewer, get the grace terminology.

I’ll never forget the fanfic space on wattpad back in 2016-2017’ish where its culture was that writers would not post their new chapters until they reached x amount of votes (kudos) and comments. I mean I’d never judge anyone for how they chose to update their fics even though I didn’t agree with them. but like. it was the entire wattpad fanfic culture back then that made most writers believe they had to set these specific numbers of votes and comments that they must reach first before they posted the next chapters. so if you were on the fanfic corner of wattpad during that time, you’d most likely have seen fics where it said in the chapter something like “50 votes and 20 comments for the next chapter!” and it was literally the norm and so normalized that I didn’t see anything weird about it back then. but looking back, years after I’ve left wattpad for ao3, yeah that culture as a whole was weird and it shaped writers into thinking that they wrote for the sake of shallow engagement instead for the joy of getting to create, it shaped writers into thinking that their fics’ worth was decided and dictated by strangers’ approval. and then tiktok became a thing and this mindset continued. not to mention how wattpad is full of ads now unless you pay the site monthly for a premium, ad-free service.
so like. man, this is why I love ao3. there’s none of these capitalism or algorithm bullshit on ao3. just writers creating out of love and passion. everybody say thank you ao3
