alright, listen, i didn’t suffer through a conversion camp when i was fourteen to be told who i can and cannot like.

trans m/f ships are still m/f ships because trans men are men, and trans women are women. that’s a dynamic i am down for, but it still doesn’t invalidate mlm or wlw or their under representation in the media. i actually would love to see more trans representation in the media, but that wasn’t the original, privileged point of the post. it feels like it was sprinkled on to appeal to minorities   /   you know it has the same vibe as the argument where someone will go “ men are abusers ” and someone else will go “ females can be abusers too ”, well yes, we know this, but that wasn’t the point. bringing up the lack of trans representation does NOT invalidate the argument that there is less wlw/mlm in the media than there is m/f and it also does not negate the fact there is too much m/f regardless.

i also haven’t suffered lifelong, and especially recent racism as an asian to be called an ignorant racist now - over something as stupid as preferring lgbtq+ ships over m/f ones that might have minority representation in them, because non-white races being represented in the industry is another problem entirely.

i’ve been seeing a reblog float around about people favouring boring and stale lgbtq+ relationships and dynamics in favour of exciting m/f relationships and that really pisses me the fuck off tbh, and that people that do it have bad taste or something ???

i know it’s an opinion but it’s a fucking bad one.

i too, despise a boring dynamic, like the dynamic they say is love triangles but is in fact two people pining over the same person ( which is not a triangle ) and never - separated borderline - sibling childhood - friends to lovers, but the fact that this take is bagging on highly underepresented lgbtq+ pairings is callous, and leaves a bad taste in my mouth.

we do not need to uphold the same standards of interest for lgbtq+ pairings that we do m/f pairings because they’re not equal yet. and we don’t need to justify them until they are. i am not saying that most would not prefer dynamics that are interesting, i am saying that lgbtq+ ships do not need to be more interesting to be deserving of media representation, especially when the same standards aren’t held to m/f ships.

the vibe of that post is saying that lgbtq+ couples need to have interesting dynamics in order to be valid or likable, which is unfair, because we’ve been forced to swallow down bland and boring comphet media for the last hundred or so years ( and still do !! ), so i feel like we’re entitled to our boring gay ships if we want them, because at the very least we have a choice.

saying that we aren’t entitled to prefer our boring vanilla ships and can only like our exciting and raunchy gay ships when extremely boring m/f ships are still a norm and expected of most media is forcing a higher standard on mlm and wlw that isn’t fair. yes, we beg and plead for more good lgbtq+ representation but even cute and unproblematic dynamics can be the preference for a lot of people over spicy and exciting m/f because it’s there, because we can see ourselves in the media.
