How to install Android Jellybean in LG Optimus Black [SUCCESS]
Yet to be finished
I decided to write this guide in order to let you know of my experience on installing my first custom ROM.
I have been using my LG Optimus Black for almost 3 years now. It first came with Gingerbread but somehow it drained all my battery. I waited anxiously for the official ICS update to come (LG kind of promised to release it), when I found about it I had already rooted my phone. When I installed ICS it felt much better than Gingerbread. But just a few days ago I just couldn't stand how slow it was, and still draining my battery like crazy.
I decided to try out CyanogenMod because I had never tried a custom ROM before but read tons about it. The need to change, more than anything else, drove me pretty fast on the way to understand whatever I needed to make this work myself. My second option would be selling the phone and buying a powerful tablet instead. Afterall what's the use of a smartphone if anything you do besides calls (and even calls) ends up on shutting off, forbidding me to accomplish the main functionality of a phone - making phone calls!?
Moving on to real business.
[all applications in this guide are free and can be either downloaded via Google Play or a browser]
- USB cable and charger
- Working computer (Windows 7 in my case)
- LG Optimus Black running Froyo or Gingerbread (ICS will brick phone but can and WILL be repaired, see blue text).
- Root phone
--- Smartflash Tool
--- LG Optimus Black Driver
--- Root Checker (optional)
- Clockworkmod Recovery
--- ROM manager
--- ASTRO File Manager
- Jellybeer Custom ROM firmware--- Firmware files
--- Google app installation files
I wasted A LOT of time trying to figure out what was the best ROM to choose from. When looking in forums I felt so annoyed by the people suggesting it's pointless to compare them. I don't have the time to try them all, so it is logical that whoever had, shares their experience with the rest of the community.
I found a solid (and most recent, picked descending date in google search) review and guide on a specific ROM, which bought me specially because of the average/big sized letters (it makes a huge difference when you're working for hours in a small netbook).
Here is it for you: http://www.android.gs/update-lg-optimus-black-android-4-2-2-cm10-1-jellybeer/
It even has a funny name. It's a CM10.1 version of an unofficial Jellybean firmware for LG Optimus Black. Means that it's not official (doh) and it will be buggy, but just a little. -> That little can be read in forums and unlike stated in that guide IT WON'T BE UPDATED. At least it's what I got from scrolling to the last pages of the correspondent XDA thread. It might not be the most recent but being referred as stable was enough.
Before attempting to install the new ROM, I had performed a factory reset which wiped the Superuser and therefore "locked" my root. It was partially rooted but didn't allow ROM manager to perform the required tasks (install Clockworkmod Recovery and perform a Backup for the current ROM). I had to root the phone again, using the UnlockRoot software.
I slowly proceeded until the ROM Backup step came. After hitting the button and allowing Superuser my phone rebooted and displayed "Security Error" which will happen to anyone trying to install custom ROMS using the LG stock firmware ICS (4.0.4). It will only work in Froyo or Gingerbread.
Of course this means I had to get rid of that error. I didn't want to keep a bricked phone forever. So I managed to download the Froyo firmware for my phone and install it using Smartflash Tool. The instructions must be followed carefully but they are easy, in my opinion.
I went successfully through that. So now I had to root my phone again, install Clockworkmod Recovery and do the ROM Backup before installing Jellybeer. Everything was easy now, with the phone correctly rooted and following the instructions just like the guide.
When it was time to reboot in recovery mode I couldn't do it through a shortcut / hotkey like demonstrated in YouTube videos or described in the forums. I stumbled upon a comment which said "Do it with ROM manager", and so I did. Simple and easy.
To navigate in Recovery mode you must use the following keys:
- Volume up / down to move
- Power button to enter
- Front keys will also move but I'd rather not touch them, it actually feels good to keep clicking instead of touching a screen for a while.
Everything worked! Now I'm running the custom ROM and tomorrow I'm going to try out all sort of tweaks and tests before I commit to the firmware.
I backed up my SD card before formatting and installing anything.
The extra apps needed in order to perform the steps in the guide were manually installed each time they weren't available.
