Hot
(Trigger warning for sexual harassment/sexual assault)
It's been a very busy few weeks (summer Latin class! Research assistantship! ), and then suddenly a deeply crap week at work, which involved some fairly significant sexual harassment (I'm not sure how to define it, really) from a library patron, and turned into a situation spanning a couple days, the police, and a lot of resentment, confusion, and mixed emotions on my part. Of course, this also means I've spent a large part of the week listening to Bikini Kill and thinking about what governs my reactions to situations like that, though I'm also clear that it's not--or shouldn't be--my responsibility to figure out how to react--it's not anything that anyone should have to plan for. I'm still processing, but this song has been going through my head a lot.Â
"I ain't got no candy for you."

Adammmmmmm!!
I realized it's been a long time since I posted any Adam Ant (well, a long time since I posted anything, really), and the Jubilee tie-in was too good to resist.

This photo is from a slut walk. Just felt that I should share. I have never had such a horrible thing happen to me, but it is more than just likely that at least one of mine (as well as your own) current friends, relatives, and/or acquaintances has been raped, molested, or abused AND THEY MAY NEVER TELL YOU or even DENY IT.Â
Because in most societies at this time, it is the one who is raped who is viewed as somehow at fault, shameful, and responsible of the actions of others. Whether it be her clothes, her attitude, her flirting, her face, her background, her family, her income, her job, ectâŚ: when it is NEVER their fault. Without willful, consious, honest, sober consentâŚ. it is not consent.

{After finally taking some time to figure out the whole Pork Magazine fuckery, and reading some awesome commentary from the people i follow and Fatpeopleofcolor tumblr, i thought that its time to lay out what i personally want as a fat person of color from my non-POC fat allies. please feel free...
This says it all. Great commentary.

Fat people are often supported in hating their bodies, in starving themselves, in engaging in unsafe exercise and in seeking out weight loss by any means necessary. A thin person who does these things is considered mentally ill. A fat person who does these things is redeemed by them. This is why our culture has no concept of a fat person who also has an eating disorder. If youâre fat, itâs not an ED â itâs a lifestyle change.

amyl nitrite
Although some of the posters for the 1977 Derek Jarman film Jubilee do say "Amyl Nitrite," the punk anti-historian played by Jordan is actually called "Amyl Nitrate," which is what this blog is named after.
See the Criterion Jubilee site, and previous picture and video references that I've posted before to explain the reference.
I'm not referring to poppers (amyl nitrite), just punk history (though amyl nitrate is an actual chemical, as well).
Doctorsâ weight prejudices start when a female patient is as little as 13 pounds overweightâmeaning her body mass index would likely be around 27âfound a 2007 study from Yale University. (BMI is a measurement that uses a ratio of height to weight to categorize people as being of normal weight [18.5 to 24.9], overweight [25 to 29.9], or obese [30+].) âFor men, the bias doesnât kick in until around a BMI of thirty-five, approximately seventy-five pounds overweight,â says Rebecca Puhl, PhD, director of Research and Weight Initiatives at the Rudd Center. âThatâs a definite gender difference.â

As a fat activist, I often want to say, âBut Iâm healthy! Look, I eat my veggies and exercise.â While itâs fun to flout stereotypes, social justice is unacceptably precarious if it depends on good behavior, or on access to other flavors of unearned privilege. For example, gaining respect for fat people who happen to be rich or healthy or white or able-bodied at the expense of other fat people is just more yuck, not yum. Human rights should be based on the fact that weâre all here, not on some begrudging notion that some of us should or would change if we could.

Slutwalk is finally coming to San Francisco on August 6th. Come out, stand out, and speak up. Our bodies are our own. Ornamentation or expression does not equal consent.
I will be the fat one with pink hair (well, one of the fat ones with pink hair--I'm sure I'm not alone).Â

I was just sitting here quietly reading tumblr, when I thought "This is so sad. Why am I doing this?"
So now I am reading my dashboard while listening to Cyndi Lauper. Everything is better.
strippr:
*I started writing this quite a while ago, but it got lost in âdrafts.â I figured today might be a good day to rescue some drafts and elaborate.
___
I constantly see bullshit regarding my job (stripping) pop up in my dashboard. And Iâm fucking sick of it. I donât know why I do this to myself,...
Strippers, sex workers, and others working sometimes-but-not-always legal sexually-oriented jobs deserve your respect and support. If you're going to talk about "rescuing" anyone from their work, first ask if they are actually trapped.Â
To quote the OP:
I am absolutely, perfectly capable of making my own decisions. I am not being manipulated. I completely understand my job, its duties, and any potential risks. I am not under the force of anyone to continue doing my jobânot a boyfriend, not a pimp, and not a trafficker. To insist that I am incapable of choosing my own job, you are perpetuating an anti-feminist attitude that womenâs decisions (about work AND about their bodies) are âbest left to others.â
I am not being abused, manipulated, exploited, or otherwise coerced into acts Iâm not willing to perform. To tell people that I AM takes away from those that most need the services and helpâthose that actually ARE being abused and exploited in the sex industry (think: sex trafficking, forced prostitution, child slavery, victims of sex tourism, those that are being sexually abused, rape victims, etc).
