Of the Empire

She was still new to all this; considering she only learned about her older brother this year. But she was looking forward to the chance to get to know him better, especially now that he was living in Dunwall.

When one of her staff announced his arrival, Emily encouraged him to come in.

"Deion, it's good to see you again."

She sauntered in and made her way over to the bar before she plopped herself down into the seat across from where Paolo stood. Mindy gave him a wide yet cheeky smile before she plopped down a little 'proof' wrapped up in a scarf shoved inside a bag.

"Took care of our little problem. Not gonna be an issue anymore."

     “You’re welcome.” Henry responded with a smile. He was trying not to look like a complete idiot in front of the pretty girl. But some how he felt like he was failing. “No, you’re not. Sure, what’s up?”

“It doesn’t have to be right now, but- I’ve sort  of been out of this world a long time. And while  I’m lucky that to have my father help- maybe you  could also help me get to know this new time  period? From a young persons perspective  of course.”

They seemed to be around the same age- or at least the age she WAS before she died. It could help her figure out what people her age should be doing.

  Ross nodded lightly, taking another drag from his own cigarette. He blew the smoke out towards the sea as he watched the horizon. “Emily it is… I’m Ross.” He replied as he took the cigarette from his lips and once more held it between his fingers. “You know I never thought I’d be meeting you in person. Unless I had a death sentence.”

  Maybe he should’ve left that part out but he figured it was best to be open, now that they were going to be working together. His father always said it was best to be honest so there’s no sour milk between fellow shipmates. Weird analogy but it was the truth.

“Nice to meet you, Ross.” She gently pulled the cigarette from her lips, a small bit of smoke trickled from her lips. But it was calming. Everything had been on the side of overwhelming lately- and even Ross’ sudden yet vague admission, and the strange woman who was travelling back to Karnaca with them, Emily just needed a moment to piece things together. 

   “Well...I suppose paths can cross for a lot of reasons.     How did you become a captain, Ross?”

  That was encouraging, even though it was pretty vague. What did that matter? It was very good news for Corvo. Even though he does count himself lucky for his daughter is alive somewhere while other families are currently grieving over their child’s death. Considering what he’s been through this far? Yeah, he’s pretty lucky. 

     "Thank you…“

Though his stare was dark and blank, for one small moment, the corner of his lip twitched up slightly. He did appreciate the gratitude. Considering he didn’t get much appreciation from his other marked souls.

 “I have to say, Corvo, I’m very interested which   path you will take, and how this all will play out.” He was sure, regardless of what path Corvo took- he would not disappoint.

  “Then why not let me go, call it even.” He knew she wouldn’t but that didn’t mean he couldn’t try. He watched her from his spot on the floor, not that he could actually see her considering the only light was coming from outside of his cell. Being locked up deep in Coldridge where all the gang members, murders, and just generally really bad people go. “I’m not going anywhere and I can’t stop you from asking.”

“You’re funny.”

The corner of her lips curl up slightly in a hint of a smile. But it was gone as soon as it arrived. For now, she leaned against the wall, as she blocked the only little bit of light coming into the cell. 

 “What made you want to work for the City’s watch?   What was your drive?”

  Corvo had his back to her, he still really wanted to kill her. But if she truly meant what she said then he’d let her live to suffer. It would do just as well, just like how he had let Daud live all those years ago. It gave Corvo comfort knowing that there were people out there suffering from their actions. It was more satisfying than any blade to the throat could ever do. 

  “I want you to know, that the same fate befell your master. I let him live to suffer for what he’s done.” Why did he even mention that? He had no clue and honestly couldn’t care. The royal protector glanced over his shoulder. “To this day I still don’t why I did… Don’t let this be a mistake.”

She stood still and silent as he spoke; in truth, she half expected him to spin around and change his mind. To be honest, she couldn’t blame him. But that’s what set him apart from them.    This also wasn’t the first time she was allowed to leave with her life- and much like the last time she had a plan on how to do better.

  “You won’t hear from me again.” 

Which- in a way pained her. Despite the hurt she had caused him long ago- she had grown close to him in their time working together. She wanted to help him destroy Delilah- someone who had deceived her long ago, to help him save his daughter- someone else she had wronged.   But perhaps that was something she could never atone for.

  As the outsider spoke, Paolo only grew more interested. Why now suddenly was he speaking to him? And why in the void was the god giving him a warning? Paolo would have to figure that out later. Right now he had to figure out who the outsider was speaking of. 

  “That I am… But perhaps I could make some time,” he honestly didn’t know how to even approach the god, “Would you care to enlighten me? Or is there a catch?”

“Are you sure?”

There is no pitch in his tone, no tell if it’s an aggressive snip or a genuine question. That’s what happens when one has been cut off from the world for so long.

“Why would there be a catch?”

In truth, the pay off would be the entertainment factor.
