Bisi Silva is an independent curator and is founder and artistic director of the CCA, Centre for Contemporary Art, Lagos (Nigeria). She was the Artistic Dire...
Listening to Bisi Silva, discussingĀ the way which different political issues have shaped the way which artist look and create art, the idea that artist base there work on what is seen in the media has changed the art world completely.Ā
linking this back to my own photography work, i want to create work which is something which has only become accepted into the world of fashion. for example in my pervious powerpointĀ āthe ideal fashionā the fact that only in recent years have models with skin conditions are being seen regularly in the art world where as a number of years ago this was never possible. which is why i would want my work to showcase models with skin conditions in a empowering light.Ā
SKIN, HERITAGE & IDENTITY
Looking back to the last shoot below, I have began to see that the ideas which i wanted to showcase have not been showcased clearly. For my major project i have always wanted to showcase African culture but add a modern day twist to make the images relatable to my target audience.
Ā Ā I have also come to the conclusion that my major project should focus on the idea of skin, heritage and identity as that is one of the main things which i wanted to showcased in the previous shoot but unfortunately that idea wasnāt clearly understood.Ā
Due to feedback and discussions which i have had with people in regards to my major project, i Ā have come to the final idea that my art work shouldnāt just be portraits with a unclear understanding they should be portraits with a clear understanding but also straight to the point, not only should i base my work on just images i should look at different elements of media which will help bring this idea to light.Ā
These images have been selected to be the final images because i think thy are the most powerful truthful images, another reason as to why they have been chosen is because the subjects are proud and look bold shows no matter want they are confident black women, and i believe as a series these images go so well.Ā
Final imagesĀ
Here is a contact sheet of my final images, as i said in the previous i wanted my work to relate to the subjects and also the myself.Ā
after this shoot Ā i spoke to the models about how they feel to have this skin condition, i also asked whether they felt welcomed by their race here are there response
Joanna:ā I am content in my skin, I've spent years battling with something that I never knew will show me how strong I am. Do I feel accepted? I can't find an answer to that but I will say that I don't care..my mission is not To make people 'accept' me rather let them know I'm here whether they like it or not. It took me years to accept myself, I'm still in the process of doing so..we are peculiar beings who place value on our value in this world but sometimes forget to note that value onto ourselvesā
Nancy:āi started to develop my first Vitiligo spots in my mid 20s whilst my husband and i were on holiday in Lanzarote but thought nothing of it because it was 2 small dots on my right hand, it then flared up once i gave birth to my son my hand went completely white and i started to develop on my face!! i felt mortified i didn't understand it and i was very worried about if my husband would accept and still find me attractiveĀ ā(to be continued)Ā

The first two images above are images which have been seen, re posted and shared in the media, these images showcase that no matter who you are what shade skin you are you, you are perfect and beautiful. i have chosen to look at these images because i feel as though they suit what it is my final images would be about.Ā
i want to create a series of images using models who have skin conditions and who have relayed on makeup to make them feel accepted. already in mind i have two models who i think would suit my vision.Ā
the last set of image are different makeup types( contouring) which is used to hide & shape the face but to also create a vision of flawless perfection. i will be using this type of makeup in my shoot to create the effect which i have been trying to achieve.Ā
Test shoot part 3Ā
I love everything about this shoot, i love the background color, i love how the images/ makeup go so well with the model and i love how these images have a meaning to myself and the model. i would say the reason why this shoot was success is because i spoke to the model and built with her a friendship, speaking to the model i realized that this project should be about skin conditions and how the use of makeup is used to hide and shape people with skin conditions to suitĀ āsocial preferencesāĀ
So for this shoot i decide to use the idea ofĀ ācontouringā as a form of make-up but also doing so in a tribal way for example instead of lines i did dot to create a African/ tribal theme.
Here are some ideas Ā which i will be looking at for my next shoot, following up from my first shoot i have decided to focus my attend to make the makeup used on the models be there for a reason, so i would want the makeup to relate to me and my culture in a way. for example i will want to showcase the union jack as i am British onto the subjects face so that the images just make more sense and so they will easily be related and understood by the audience who will view my work.Ā
the reason as to why i have also looked at body/ facial piercings is because not only do i want to use makeup but i also want to add a modern twist by using facial piercings to represent elements of me.Ā
Here are some images which i shot on my phone,to get some ideas of what it is I want to create.Ā
I do like these images but I feel as though they donāt really suit what I am trying to achieve reason being they seem dull and do not have a eye catching factor to them.Ā
For my next shoot I will be more experimental and it will be based in the studio so i will be able to play around with lightingĀ
For my major project i have been drawn to the idea of creating portaits using body paint to repsent culture and tribe. my main starting point was the images at the bottom, for as long as i can remeber i have always been a massive fan of fela kuti and his shows, reason being i love how perfect everything looks i love the makeup used on the dancers, to the clothing, headwear. all this has made me sure that body paint of any form of tribal makeup will be involved in my final images.Ā

lecture : Photo Book
The Photo book , A Ā Renaissance.
This lecture was discussing how the experience of photography online has made artists & photographers much more aware of the book as an object. the lecture was mainly understanding photo books and the form and content. I feel as though this lecture helped me greatly, because i have now be able to piece together what i think would be great to show in my own photo book and now i am able to understand more the pattern that i would want my own photo book to have. Also now that we are living in a world which is based around technology photo books have become more popular. Although some people may argue that due to the fact that the world we are living in is based on technology and everything is digitalised photo books are becoming less relevant.
Content of Photo Book
By looking at all the photo books which i like i have now been able to decide what i would want my project to be based on.Ā
I have decided to create a photo book rather than a magazine because I feel as though with a photo book you are able to express more and can showcase different styles, where as a magazine has to be one style of photographs if not it wouldnāt flow well. The photographs which i have chosen to add in my photo book are images which I would like to see in a book, I have also decided to make my photo book all about color and culture. this is because to me both color and culture go hand in hand.Ā
Unfortunately at the moment i am stuck as to how I am going to make my photo book really stand out and capture an audiences attention, I would want my photo book to be something which hasnāt be done before but at the same time I would want to use elements of the photo books which I looked at in my previous blog post.Ā
Photo books/magazines
Here are some photo books and online/physically magazine I have been looking at which inspire me in creating my own photo book or magazine.Ā
The first photo book which I have been looking at is aĀ Book by Dean Chalkley and Harris Elliot called theĀ ā The Return of The Rude Boyā. The reason why this book has been chosen by me to inspire me is because though out the book, the genre is very clear which is something i like. I like a book which is not complicated to understand and also doesnāt make viewers confused as to what style of photography the book is about. Another reason why I have chosenĀ āThe Return of The Rude boyā is because the layout of the book looks great the everything has a flow and order, which is also something I would want my own photo book/ magazine to have.Ā
The second photo book which I have also found interesting and want to use as inspiration is a book created byĀ Daniele Tamagni, Paul Smith, Paul Goodwin. To me this book is one of my favorite books,I say this because I really like reading through this book. It creates a strong emotions when looking at the images i would say the reason of this is because of the colors used for the book are very vibrate and playful colors but they make everything stand out and really catch the viewers attention. Which is the same effect I would want my own project to have, i would want the colors to flow and the layout of the page to all make sense meaning for everything to all work together.Ā
The third book which I have looked at, is the work created by Richard Mosse infra photographs at lot likeĀ āgentlemen of Congoā Mosseās work uses bright vibrate colors which also grab the audience attention and makes them intrigued to want to know more.Ā
below are the spoken photo books/ photo books which have not been mentioned and also some magazines which I looked at for inspiration.Ā
Page Intro
Here is my chosen module introduction as to what isĀ āpageā and also the reason why i have chosen this module.Ā
Page is looking at different types of photo books and creating your own book or magazine. The reason why I have Ā chosen Ā this module is because I liked the idea of actually creating something which can be held, a lot of my work has been photographs which have only been used for on wall which to me isnāt as intimate as a physical photo book or magazine.Ā
I also believe that as a photographer living in this generation where everything is based digitally e.g internet and social media, we are beginning to lose what the real meaning of photography & art is. So by me doing this module I am able to know and try out different skills in photography and hopefully to make my work more interactive to viewers.Ā

day 4;Ā
following from day 3 , I have Ā decided to find different sources to back up the points which I will be making when presenting.Ā
Here are some sources which was found.
https://www.theguardian.com/sustainable-business/black-model-british-vogue-naomi-campbell-racismĀ
I read an article written by Tansy Hoskins which discuses very important views of racism in the world of fashion, Hoskins to me talks about issues which many people would have thought had ended, but still live on specifically for black models.Ā
One thing which I found so interesting when reading though the article was how no other black model other than Naomi Campbell has been seen in the Prada campaign since 1994, which is just very shocking to me.Ā

Donyale Luna (first black model on the cover of vogue UK, March 1 1966)
Ā Naomi Campbell (first black model for French vogue age 18)
