I'm starting a new D&D campaign soon, and I'm taking the opportunity of making a new character to practice my digital art
This is my first digital piece that I did everything digitally (thats gone well), usually I draw the sketch with pencils and then do lineart and colours digitally.

Finally, after 20 hours of gameplay and like 4 months of on-and-off playing, (and dealing with BS rng for the gift ending) I got the Ice Queen ending in monster prom
I love Vera Oberlin so much 💚
more in depth thoughts about the ending and how I think Monster Prom writes such likeable characters under the cut!
I think it would be reasonable if I was annoyed at having to put in an extra 20 hours into a game to get all the content of my favourite character- but:
1) I was also trying to unlock the locket ending for polly and that took a weirdly long time and
2) I wouldnt be surprised if it only took that long because I had awful luck with getting all the gift items.
However what spending that time unlocking endings for a ton of characters did is turn me from someone who only cared for Vera and Zoe (on a pretty surface level) into a fan of every character in the original Monster Prom. So I guess locking the deeper endings behind completion makes sense.
Speaking on the Ice Queen ending itself, I feel like its a perfect example of why I think monster prom's approach to writing characters works so well and is so endearing. Immediately on meeting each character, you are familiar with their "gimmick" (hot mean business-minded gorgon, hot hot-headed arson boy, hot party ghost, etc.) and you can pick a character to pursue based on which "gimmick" you like the most. Most of a characters events are based around these gimmicks and writing these crazy choices and events is clearly where the writers shine.
I feel like the reason I got so attatched to these characters is becuase I wasn't expecting any nuance in the characters when starting out. Leaving these characters at this surface level would be completely fine for a casual party/ multiplayer dating sim. But Monster Prom takes these gimmicks and considers why these characters, as people, could possibly think the way they do, act the way they do and be friends with who they are, which adds such a nice layer of depth to each character that gets me invested in them like crazy.
Going back to why i think the method works- it takes these exaggerated caricatures and really humanises and endears the players to them. Like for Vera, the player takes her to be a cruel character mainly motivated by money and some kind of entitled pride - but through various secret endings you learn how she takes such pride in being an Oberlin and being successful because thats her way of "paying back" her Dad for raising her after she was abandoned by her biological parents. Even just the realisation of Vera and Valerie being siblings is a neat bit of backstory that humanises them (the way that the game takes "the shopkeeper" character and reveals her to have a full character is also really cool).
But specifically for the Ice Queen ending, I find the way it shows Vera's softer side to be the most endearing thing about it; that softer side is what made Vera my favourite character after my first few runs- her general mean and cruel attitude just makes all the moments where she is genuinely sweet stand out more! Especially considering how these sweeter moments play into her overall characterisation- like with her story of how she became friends with Scott.
Vera's friendship with Scott shows from the start that there are deeper layers to her- why would the girl who values cruelty and intelligence above all else be friends with the nicest and stupidest jock there is (other than Scott being the most loveable guy ever)? In this ending, it is revealed that Vera initially had the expected annoyed reaction to Scott, but when he doesn't show up on her weekly jog (because he was ill), she's clearly at least a little bothered by it despite trying to avoid him. I think this is because she values loyalty- but what solidifies her friendship with him is when she finds out he was also abandoned by his parents, but wasnt adopted like she was. This leads her to taking soup to him whilst he's sick (which is so sweet and not like her usually its adorable i love her).
When telling the story, Vera puts emphasis on how the first thing Scott said when she met him was apologising over not making it to her jog- which is what really settles their friendship in my opinion because Vera emphasises with him and finds his loyalty admirable.
This story explores both characters seemingly conflicting personalities and shows how both of them are friends despite being so different, adding so much depth to them and making them more multifaceted.
And its not even the only one in this ending! Theres 2 more stories with LOADS of unique and beautiful art, that explore Vera's relationships with Polly and Valerie and how her life experiences and relationships inform her worldview. Earlier in the game, her "conquer the world" ideology immediately comes across as in line for her boss-bitch "gimmick", but endings like these explore what that really means to her past simply earning and taking what she thinks she deserves: for example, how her worldview and general attitude is pretty nihilistic because (despite her adoptive family loving her and her loving them back) being abandoned by her birth parents clearly impacted how she sees the world, which is partially what leads her to believe most people are pretty shit. Even then thats not just a one note reason to explain why shes cruel, it also explains why she values loyalty so much and why, when someone sticks by her, she loves them so fiercely- to her, because most people are cruel or stupid or both, it makes her connections with the great people in her life even more meaningful.
Its character details like this that make the Monster Prom cast so special in my opinion.
This ending also doesnt just exist to dump lore, its got a message about friendship and that individual connections matter and how people are more complex than the boxes we put them in, which I think the ending does well and is a decent moral. Like a couple other endings I can see people being annoyed that the game is almost punishing you for playing it like a dating sim (trying to force shallow connections with Vera instead of genuinely meeting her as an equal), but theres a way worse example of that in Kale's ending, which I also have a lot to say about that so I'll leave that there. I mostly value this ending for the character writing rather than the message the writing serves, but its a decent message; I think its nice for a dating game to also explore the importance of platonic relationships as well as romantic ones, and acknowledge how in real life relationships are deeper than how they're presented in this dating sim.
If I tried I could probably write up something like this for each of the main characters, but I really love Vera so much as she's my favourite and FINALLY getting this ending really made me want to critically think through why I like her so much.
