Warnings, A/N: Takes place in modern day, characters are you, Marty Jr and Marlene. People, please write more for Marty Jr and Marlene!!!
You were pushed out of the way by said boy, who was currently running (maybe even sprinting) from the Cafe 80s, the door still swinging slightly. You had to scramble to your feet when a car nearly ran you over, letting out a yelp as you barely made it onto the sidewalk. Your eyes widened even more, somehow, when Griff and his gang came running out of the same restaurant, pursuing Junior as he scrambled around, quickly making it for two young children (that doesn't sound wrong at all).
You looked back to the 80s place, still in shock, making eye contact with Griff's grandfather who seemed to be shining Griff's car or whatever. He just gave a weak wave and a nod, and after a second said, "How's it going?" You nodded in reply after registering his words, turning back to where Junior was.
All of a sudden, he was on a hoverboard! Well, he was at least trying to ride it. After witnessing an entire chase sequence with epic orchestral music that was playing from Scott knows where, Junior narrowly missed a bat to the face from Griff, who along with his gang had ended up crashing into the Hill Valley court house You watched in awe, Junior splashing around in the water (and, unbeknownst to you, the real Junior leaving the Cafe 80s in hilarious nonchalance, to the surprise of Old Biff). You wanted to go and check if your crush was okay, but remembering him made you remember how much he liked Pepsi Perfect, and remembering that reminded you of just how hungry you were, so you made your way into the Cafe 80s, where you were supposed to meet Junior, unknowingly narrowly missing the real him.
You knocked on the door for the fourth time, eyebrows furrowing as you looked off to the side. Just as you raised your fist to knock once more, you could hear footsteps descending stairs, a voice groaning and mumbling something like, "Hold on, someone's at the door." Junior's twin sister, Marlene, opened the door, her phone glasses hanging from her neck and one of the earpieces for it in her hand. You'd seen her (and Griff's gang) before on some of the Zoom calls you guys had for school, most notably where most people turned their cameras off. Not Marlene. At least Junior not caring about (and most of the time, not knowing) whether his camera was on or not meant you could stare at him and space out during boring lectures and...Β
What were you doing, again? Right!
"H--" Marlene held up a hand, cutting you off. "I know, I know. You're here for Junior." You nod. She simply walked away, leaving the door open as she resumed her call, putting the ear piece back in her ear. You guessed it was with her friends and that they were talking about the whole fiasco with Griff's gang, seeing how you overheard her say, "I know, the court house. ...No, I'm not dating Spike, why does everyone think we're--"
You walked up the stairs after closing the door, heading towards Junior's room.
"Junior?" you call out, knocking on his door and entering once you received no response. The room was empty, so you decided to just sit down on his race car bed and wait for him to come home. Maybe something came up. You hoped he was okay. Looking around, you got a bit sad. The only thing that screamed "Junior" in his room was his bed; the walls were devoid of posters, his old action figures from when he was a kid were probably collecting dust in his tiny closet, and his dresser didn't even have any polaroids or other things teens were supposed to have.
About five minutes later, he arrived. Of course, he was on his phone glasses, this time clearly scrolling seeing as he had the wireless touch pad in his hand. He shimmied out of his broken-sleeved jacket distractedly, throwing it on the floor.
"Instagram or TikTok?" you asked (knowing it probably wasn't Twitter since he could barely read), and when you got no response, you lowered his glasses. His slightly blood-shot eyes met yours, and he had to blink a few times, his irises finally meeting yours.
"Hey, (Y/N)," he said, rubbing his eyes and giving you that tiny, goofy grin you loved.
"You were on a Mattel hoverboard!" you said, amazed, recounting earlier today.
"I was?" he asked, eyes lighting up a bit. It was no secret to you, his closest (and only...) friend, that his family was not in the best place financially. By no means were they poor, probably partially since they were white, seeing as how they had a two story house, but Junior's father had wanted to be a rock star and couldn't due to his injury from an accident decades ago, before Junior and Marlene were even conceived. Apparently, Marty Sr was quite good at electric guitar, and he could have really made it in the music scene if he weren't so prideful. Junior's told you details about his family many times in passing, with that unique nonchalance he has towards everything (even Griff's gang constantly picking on him), and while a part of you absolutely adored his dumbness, another part of you was quite sad about it.
The point is, Junior's family is not doing the best financially and probably couldn't afford a hoverboard. So, the fact that Junior didn't seem to own a Mattel board made you a bit skeptical. You knew his memory wasn't the best, though, so you prodded a bit more.
"Uh... yeah, earlier, outside the Cafe 80s?" Junior blinked, tossing the touch pad somewhere into his pile of dirty clothes in the corner of the room and trying to reach for the glasses as you held them out of reach.
"I don't remember that," he said simply. He grabbed for his phone glasses again, to which you put a finger on his nose and sighed.
"Junior, you're too addicted to this thing. You can't even hold a conversation anymore," you said. He kept his gaze down at his nose, and you weren't sure if he was truly listening or not. You pinched the bottom of his nose gently, and he let out an "ahhh" once you did, sounding like Squidward.
"Junior, I care about you so much. Don't you care about me?" you asked sadly, letting go of his nose.
"Well, right now, I just wanna watch my programs while I scroll," he answered honestly. Any other time, his bluntness would be endearing, but right now it just made you even sadder.
"It's okay," he said, half-heartedly comforting you as he sat down on the bed. "Did you know that 9/11 didn't happen?"
"Junior, that's just not true."
"The moon landing was fake, too! We couldn't see the stars in the sky."
Marlene opened the door, sighing and quickly saying, "Dad just said to make sure you guys weren't doing anything," before going back to what she was doing, clearly eager to.
"What does he think we're doing?" Junior asked even though Marlene was clearly too far away to hear him now. You tried not to flush at the implication, a bit embarrassed.
"He, uh, probably just wanted to make sure we weren't... y'know."
"I don't." Of course, it was Junior.
He reached for the glasses again, and you had to hide it behind your back.
"Look," you said, reaching into your jacket pocket (you wear your jeans inside out to match Junior), "I got you something." You held it up to him.
"A fox?" he asks, taking it in his hands.
"A fox chew toy," you confirm. "So you can have something else to do besides go on your phone."
"I think I know someone named Fox," he says.
"So, I can chew this while I scroll?" he asks, sniffing the chew toy. He looked so adorable and weird that you had to keep yourself from smiling.
"No, Junior. The point is so you don't scroll," you say.
"Aww," he complains, his posture going slump and his hand going limp, the chew toy softly landing on the bed.
"I didn't shower today," he says. "Or yesterday. Or since last week." At your confused look, he says, "You said I had to conversate more."
"Converse," you correct, "and... good start." He grins dorkily.
"Also, I know you haven't showered because your hair is greasy. And you don't really take care of yourself.. ever." He keeps the grin, blinking dumbly and looking so stupidly cute you wanted to squeeze his cheeks.
"Junior... can I ask you something?" you trail off, looking away, a bit nervous. He laughed a bit, and you looked back at him.
"You sounded like Character AI!" he said, snorting in between small laughs that sounded more like hiccups, talking about a "clanker" or something. "Yeah," he finally answers, still smiling.
"...Do you like anyone?" you asked, trying to keep your heart rate steady as you looked into his eyes.
"Yeah," he replies, which leaves your mind and heart racing as you fought the flush that crept up your neck.
"Who? If I may ask," you respond, voice cracking a bit from nerves.
Your heart felt like it stopped.
"Did you know that Rosa Parks was white?"
"Waitwaitwait-- wait," you say, frazzled and holding your hands up. "WHAT?!" You looked at him, face definitely red now, eyes blown wide open.
"Yeah," he said. "I heard it in a YouTube Short, this guy also said that--"
"N-- Not that," you say, your words coming out in stutters. "Y-- You jus--" Your breathing was uneven at this point. "Junior!"
"Yeah?" he replied, again with that softly apathetic tone, his eyes so dumb and his eyebrows raised and his face so infuriatingly perfect to you.
"Junior!!" you repeated, in awe.
"...You like me?" you asked carefully, as if saying it with too much force would shatter the fact and make it untrue.
"Yeah?" he said, still looking at you as if it weren't the biggest deal in the world to you. "I think everyone knows that. Marlene, my dad, my mom, even my gramma and gramps--"
"Whhhaaatttttt..." you breathe out, ".........really????"
"Yeah." You were starting to get tired of that response from him, wanting more--more details, more explanation, more clarity.
"In what way do you like me?"
"It insists upon itself," Junior said in a voice, immediately laughing. It was music to your ears but not the time for it. "Hehe, sorry, you said it like Peter Griffin in that one Family Guy clip-- sorry," he caught himself.Β
"I like you like, like like you. I like that you're nice to me and my family and always want to hang out even if I am addicted to my phone. I like that you always try to help me in so many ways, sorry I'm so dumb. I like that you wear your pants inside out to match me. I like that you like me back."
"It was kinda obvious. There's this Instagram Reel where--"
"Uh-- never mind. Also, please don't believe those. I like you, Junior. I really like you."
"You're you," you insist, "and I like you."
"That's good," Junior replies, smiling a bit. "My dad said that I'm a lost cause if you didn't like like me since no one else would and I would never get married and die alone."
"That's a big word for you," you compliment, proud and grinning.
"I know, I know," you cut him off.
"Do you wanna watch Vine compilations while we eat pizza? My grandparents are coming over tonight and will make some," he asked. You assumed this was his version of asking you out. You'd ask later.
"That's so romantic. Yes, of course," you reply, smiling like a fool. Junior smiles back, a bit of pink coming to his cheeks this time.Β
"I like you a lot, (Y/N)."
"I like you, too, Junior."
The blush came back and you blinked rapidly as you processed his request.Β
"Oh-- sure..." you said, a bit bashful now.
He leaned over and kissed your cheek, the sound of him inhaling quite funny as he pulled away with a "MwwwwwuAHHHHH."
You grinned like an idiot, leaning over and returning the favor, making the same silly, over exaggerated kiss sound.
"Sorry," he says, but you get the sense he doesn't really care too much. He put the fox chew toy in his mouth. Goodness, it's like he knew how cute you found him!
You looked down, still smiling, and spotted that he'd taken the phone glasses and kissed you as a distraction. You whip your head up, and he gives a slightly sheepish smile, spitting out the chew toy.
"Did you know Epstein didn't kill himself?" he said, a line of drool dangling from his mouth.
"...Okay, that one's probably true..."
