Except he's a lot more complex than that. He's like, the coolest loser you'll ever meet.

Because yes, he does like this cool guy stuff. How many friends does he have? Let's see here. His band mates, his girlfriend, and and the town's mad scientist. Post-canon add two kids (Jules and Verne).

He has low self esteem. He's extremely polite. He is constantly confused and stumbling around. Can't stay still and can't stay focused. Yet still has a proud streak (likely rooted from that low self-esteem). Why does he sleep Like That.

His entire family are losers. He's trying so hard to not fall into the rut the rest of his family is in. Yet there's still that struggle, as he comments he'll never amount to anything. He is the definition of trying to break a family curse. And in the original 2015, he fails at this.

And then there is post-time travel. How many times has a gun been pointed at this 17 year old? How many times did he almost die? How many horrors did he witness in the span of a month?

Not to mention the changes in the timeline. His family is different. He has different memories than them. A different life. Now he has to fit in to the new world he created. He also has to grapple with what he saw in the future and how to avoid that.
