i havent been able to put this into words ever since i first got into phm but i love so dearly for so many reasons that everyone in the movie except for the alien is kind of just a normal average person. i like that the main guy is just some dude. like hes ryan gosling and at no point is attention drawn to the fact that hes conventionally attractive because it doesnt Matter. he's just Some Dude. hes a coward. hes kind of an asshole. he wears a worn-down cardigan and rides a bike to work. he really really doesnt want to die. it's a villain-less movie and the closest thing you get to a villain is just a woman who's scared of the earth she loves being killed. she dresses in neutral and earth tones and baggy clothes and doesnt wear makeup, and she can sing pretty well but her voice is shaky when she does karaoke. carl isnt evil or malicious hes just a guy doing his job. none of the characters are like, jaw droppingly brave dark backstoried stoic heroes, or evil cunning hand-rubbing maniacal laughing villains, theyre just people, and despite this, the movie says they all deserve to live and be happy and find love in whatever way they can. isnt that awesome
