their friendship isn’t all that conventional,   but isn’t that what’s so great about it?  they’ve got each other,  and even when others don’t understand...  well,  teddy doesn’t mind,  because they don’t have a clue.   “i know her as a doctor,  but we’re not having sleepovers and exchanging gossip and talking about our lives,”   an unnecessarily dramatic example just to drive the point home.   “it’s attending,  by the way.  and chief of cardio,”   it may also be unnecessary to answer an unasked question,  but teddy does so anyway.  brow inches nearer her hairline as he speaks,  a sigh falling from her lips as she rubs the back of her neck,  hoping to alleviate some of the ache that’s settled from so many hours in the OR,   “i was planning on checking in on a few patients,  but i can always assign a resident to the job if this is urgent,”   the note about too many ears leaves her with little doubt that the subject matter is non-human in nature,  which sounds potentially draining atop the exhaustion she already feels  —  but he is her best friend,  so for now,  teddy doesn’t see any harm in humoring him.

“i’m not trying to be funny,”   she intends for the words to come out playful,  but she’s just tired.  with a sigh,  teddy watches from a spot she’s decided she’s glued to.   “seriously though,  shouldn’t you be off cooking for her?  i eat takeout all the time,  it’s seriously no big deal,”   arms wrap around herself,  and the next thing she knows he’s right there and they’re both seated.   “i’m not so sure about that,”   teddy shakes her head,   “he just...  he doesn’t remember me at all.  i really thought i had to be making it up a few times,  but no...  no he just really doesn’t remember me,”  

she wishes she wasn’t.   truthfully,  she’d slept for a few minutes  —  twenty,  based on the brief glimpse she’d given her phone.  since then it’s been in and out of some odd semi-conscious state.  honestly,  teddy hasn’t slept much in the days that have passed since she’d learned that mat has no memory of her...  no memory of them.  it’s a dangerous to dwell on,  and enzo’s voice pulls her from it as she sits up,  elbows resting on her knees.   “nope.  why?  what’s up?”   finally she looks at him,  tone a little short,   “you do something to piss grey off again?”

eyes are locked on arizona,   she simply can’t look away.  how could she?  joy is radiating off her girlfriend in waves.  teddy had expected a brilliant reaction,  but this blows her expectations out of the water  —  god,  this was worth it.  holy shit,  she loves her.   “i thought you might think so,”   teddy laughs,  and when arizona takes her hand?  she takes a deep,  contented breath,  prying her hand free in favor of wrapping her arms around her girlfriend’s waist from behind.  chin rests on arizona’s shoulder and teddy hums softly,   “i know you did.  i’m glad you like it,”

with a sigh,  her head moves to rest on arizona’s shoulder,   “it’s just been a long day,  that’s all,” 

his kind can be dangerous.   she knows that,  of course she knows that,  it’s only been a week since one had broken in and left her terrified   (   if she’s being honest,  that terror’s not gone,  but he needs her to be strong right now   ).   head rests on his shoulder as she guides his hand to rest on her stomach,  hers sitting atop it as she speaks softly,   “feel that?  that’s our son.  he’s alright,  and i’m alright,  and so are you.  we’re gonna be okay,  mat,  we’ve all got each other and you and i have overcome worse,”   she’s referring,  of course,  to the period where he’d been made to forget her.  it’s not something she likes to dwell on,  but it feels like a good time to bring it up.   “everything’s gonna be just fine,”   words are soft,  and she hopes they’re soothing,  because her husband deserves peace and nothing less.

“are you sure these ingredients were,  uh,  fresh?”   nose scrunches,  and god knows why,  but teddy takes another bite before shoving the dish away,   “no,  no,  addison that’s awful,”

“you believe in that stuff,”   her smile doesn’t fade,  arms wrap loosely arizona’s neck,  fingers hardly touching behind her back,   “you believe,  so i do too.  and it’s a really comforting concept,  actually,  to think that you and i were supposed to find each other,”   teddy sighs contentedly as the second kiss lingers.  the question posed a moment later only broadens her smile,   “i think that’s a fantastic idea.  i’d love that.  i love any time i get to spend with you,”   

at first she’s disoriented,   what time is it?  why is she awake?  but it’s then that she registers her daughter’s voice and sits up immediately to look at the clock on her bedside table.  two a.m.,  that’s...  not a great sign,  so teddy holds her arms open,  swinging her legs out from under the covers so delia can sit if she wants to,   “hi baby,”   she murmurs soothingly,   “everything okay?  what’s wrong?”

teddy takes in a shaky breath,  and she can’t even make eye contact as she speaks again,   “i’ve had a really bad day,”   and that’s all she manages to get out.
